I keep hearing Trump surrogates and supporters (and Trump himself) talk about the bias in the media and a "rigged election" but I don't see it. I feel that The media had given trump way more air time this whole election cycle, starting with when Trump Was calling in to the morning shows every morning to make comments and give his opinions. I assume that he hired the surrogates to make it easier on him so that he wouldn't have to do that. Those surrogates are permanent fixtures on the news shows. Now, trump is saying/doing things daily that keep him in the limelight and of course the media is going to cover it.
Also, according to what Giuliani said this morning, trump has never meant that the polls would be rigged (although that is exactly how i have taken it and apparently others have as well) but that the media is rigging the election by their coverage.
What are your thoughts?

I think:
---That people (generally speaking) will tend to flock to whatever media resonates with them and "makes sense",
---That there Are media outlets that may appear to be biased if you're on the receiving end of the "news" (good or bad),
---that he compares the $$ amount that Hillary spends on ads vs. himself, but he gets so much free publicity by being emboldened and brazen on a daily basis,
---that in Donald Trumps case, he REFUSES to think of himself in any negative manner, and because he is such a narcissistic man, he's probably upset that everyone including the media isn't fawning all over him. He thinks he does or says nothing wrong and that everyone else is just dumb, so to comfort his huge ego, "it just HAS to be rigged, because I'm the greatest there ever was, is, and will be!",
---Giuliani is just as bat shit stupid. Trump himself has said rigged. He had on his website for people to sign up to be poll watchers so that these people could stop what they thought (and left up to them to decide for themselves!!!) were shenanigans (read -that people were not voting for Trump). Giuliani needs to sit down and STFU.
---Trump recently told his supporters (this weekend) that he was going to stop the press/media
"At one of his events on Friday, Trump said he will "stop" the "sick media." "The media is, indeed, sick, and it's making our country sick, and we're going to stop it," he said."
I'm reading that as limiting the First Amendment and I wouldn't put it past him to want to try to funnel and feed what he thinks should disseminated to the general public as a way of silencing those who don't agree with him.

Trump can't see how his behavior has consequences. That is the scary part about him. He started fights with pretty much anyone in a nasty, undignified manner.
The Media is supposed fo follow the Equal Time Rule. Which is not the same as the now extinct fairness doctrine. Which part below has the media has violated?
The equal-time rule specifies that U.S. radio and television broadcast stations must provide an equivalent opportunity to any opposing political candidates who request it. This means, for example, that if a station gives a given amount of time to a candidate in prime time, it must do the same for another couple andidate who requests it, at the same price if applicable.[1] The equal-time rule was created because the FCC thought the stations could easily manipulate the outcome of elections by presenting just one point of view, and excluding other candidates. It should not be confused with the now-defunct Fairness Doctrine, which dealt with presenting balanced points of view on matters of public importance.
There are four exceptions to the equal-time rule. If the airing was within a documentary, bona fide news interview, scheduled newscast or an on-the-spot news event, the equal-time rule does not apply. Since 1983, political debates not hosted by the media station are considered "news events," and as a result, are not subject to the rule. Consequently, these debates may include only major-party candidates without having to offer air time to minor-party or independent candidates. Talk shows and other regular news programming from syndicators, such as Entertainment Tonight, are also declared exempt from the rule by the FCC on a case-by-case basis.[2]

I think some media and their employees are biased, although I'm not sure they would think so.
I also think most newscasters and reporters try to be fair and impartial, but there are so many ways in which to unintentionally slant things - a word choice, what you include and don't include in your coverage, what events you cover and don't, etc.
Nowadays, we have so much non-stop coverage of "news" on TV that there are many many hours to fill and there is more "commentary" or opportunities to include interviews and analysis. Those can look biased to some people and you can often see and hear those things through your own lens of expectations and beliefs. We have "news" shows that are centered around the personality who hosts, and those can definitely have more of a slant, or bias, than just reporting what happened that day.
I do think, in the early days when Trump was just beginning his political move, that he got much more air time than anyone else. Maybe because it was an "out of the norm" thing, everything he did or said was reported and he was all over some of the news outlets, like the morning shows, because he'd call in and give his opinion on anything. I remember thinking that it didn't seem right that Trump was always getting the chance to weigh in on anything and everything. But I think he got used to being the "go-to" guy always on AND rarely questioned by anyone. Now things are different and he isn't just the businessman contemplating a run for president - but I think he still wants to be treated the way he was earlier on in the process.

I definitely think there are certain stations and shows that are biased. But if he thinks mainstream is biased against him, then quit acting so fucking batshit crazy. On the other hand, don't cuz I don't want you running this country.

One specific example is Willie Geist's interview of Giuliani this morning. I felt that Willie was too easy on Giuliani and let him go on and on, then backtrack when Willie asked him to clarify what he was saying regarding the media, the rigged election, and implying that the women accusing Trump of sexual assault were brought by the Clinton campaign. I went to Willie's Facebook page and there are people there claiming they are disgusted with his "bias". The only thing I can see is that they feel that any questioning of the interviewee means the interview is biased.

Agree 100% I read the book How to Watch TV News by Neil Postman, some years ago. It has since been revised, but it is interesting to dig into how the bias occurs. Plus with the networks wanting to be the first one to break the story, we usually only get a snippet of context because they rush to air it.

I think there are news shows and other shows that are biased, but in general, I do not.
The media coverage of Trump helped him win his party's nomination because the people who voted in the primaries liked his message.
Now the media attention is hurting him because he has gone bat shit crazy and his lack of knowledge and propensity to make shit up is showing.

I'm really not surprised at some of the answers here. Because the bias is in favor of your candidate,of course you don't see it.
I have no problem with the media reporting what Trump says or does. The problem and the bias, for me, comes by the fact that they tend not to print the negative stuff about Clinton. And yes,it is out there, they just choose not to print or discuss it on their news channels.
Yes, the mainstream media is definitely biased.

The one thing I don't like about the equal time rule is it really only applies to the two major parties. Independent parties don't get the same type of coverage. I would like to see a viable 3rd party that is fiscally conservative yet socially liberal. It's going to be hard to create it without de-regulating or reorganization of the media and political system to help level the playing field. I don't know enough about politics to know what that is, but as an independent, my hope is it would promote more engaging thoughts and ideas.

I've been watching this from a sort of neutral standpoint. I have friends that are staunch Republicans and firm Democrats. I don't care about politics and I don't care what side my friends are on. I am just fascinated with the psychology of how this is all playing out. My take on it is this:
Hilary is crooked and knows how to work the system. She has deep, deep connections. Even in the media. Trump does not and it pisses him off. So he lashes out and points fingers at anything and anyone.
Trump is the biggest Narcissist that we've ever seen and many people are unaware of how this type of person works. Including the media. He is used to getting his way no matter what it takes. Bullying, distraction, pointing fingers, grandiose lies and never ending accusations. The media gives him a lot of attention by reporting what he says.
I think the media is typically democratic in it's thinking even though it says it's unbiased. I think they smell what's the biggest story and zone in on it and explode it wide open. Just like Trump does. He sees what triggers his followers and runs with it.
But when the tables are turned Trump doesn't like that and so he lashes out and accuses everyone and comes up with conspiracy theories.
So I think he is getting his fair share of media attention but he just doesn't like the way it's going for him.

Equal media time doesn't mean unbiased. Yes, our media IS biased and always has been. It can be as simple as what to cover, or not cover. Word choice can also play into an unconscious bias. Even our "main stream" media is biased. If you want the full story look for alternate news sources from a variety of positions.
Has it never bothered you, or maybe never occurred to you, that CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC all report nearly identical news stories with identical photos/film footage?

Weren't there a lot of complaints a while back about the biased media because they were always reporting on Trump and you never heard enough about Hillary? Now that Trump has gone bat shit crazy to the highest degree, I'm not seeing those complaints. I think the media wants high ratings and journalistic integrity is way down there.

I bleed blue, I am liberal and damn proud of it. I also am well educated, follow US politics closely, have lived abroad and have a world view, I do not have American Univision.
I was thinking about how we got here. How did we end up with Trump as the Republican candidate? He has done 10 or 12 things that would have forced any other candidate to drop out of the race. He is outrageous. I don't think anyone can argue with that.
Then my thoughts turned towards Hillary. I like her. I think the whole Bengazi issue is complete BS. ( I know no surprise there) Without Bengazi we would have never ended up on the emails. I think in a 'Typical" election cycle Hillary's email issues would have forced her to drop out of the race.
So we have two candidates who in a typical cycle would never have made it to the nomination. How did we get here?
I think a lot of it has to do with the media and the lack of impartial journalism. I do not think the media in general wants to push one candidate ahead of another I think they want to sell the best story. So they sold Trump, they gave him more coverage than he might have garnered if he was some other billionaire running with no experience. I think they also pushed the Bengazi/email stories. Because it enraged the public, on both sides of the aisle... more viewers! They took the position viewers are outraged they will watch more....
Because these things are news??? On hell no. They are not news organizations they are Entertainment. They are ratings driven, they are focusing on what will appeal to the average TV watcher.
I have stopped watching televised news not because I think it is biased against or for a candidate but because they are trying to sell the story they think most Americans want to hear.. they don't care about the truth.

Then he says he never did any of those things. For me, I could never vote for a man that does not understand government, could try to start a nuclear war to show our power, and one who show a huge disregard for anyone who does not look or think like he does. He would do well to stay quiet and not offend more people before the election. It also saddens me to watch his supporters at his rally bring young children to listen to what he has to say. I haven't ever seen his son at a rally. The whole thing is just sad.

Sure the media is biased but the bias is money. They will run whatever stories bring in the most viewers which brings in the most money. Ratings, ratings, ratings. That is the only thing that counts.

Liberal bias gets brought up in every election. There is some but Fox News - the "Fair and Balanced" network (don't choke when you read those words) - is biased toward Republicans. Many of them don't like Trump but their stories will look favorably on Republicans over Democrats all the time. They clearly are delighted to report or imply anything untoward about anyone named Clinton.
There is one reporter for CBS - Major Garrett - who is covering the Trump campaign and you can practically see the disdain for Trump dripping from his lips every time he reports a story. If I had to spend every day listening to Trump, I'm not sure I could keep myself impartial either but I think he is obviously opposed to Trump with both is words and expressions. There may be more like Garrett. I try to watch different networks for my evening news but I'm sure I don't catch all the reports.
My issue with the media particularly in this election cycle is laziness. They - all of them - will string together a few Tweets writing a little obvious filler between them and file that as a story. If there was true and timely reporting going on, Trump would likely have never made it this far. His poor business record and his past interviews were there for any investigative reporter to dig up and for any news producer to push. No one bothered. Maybe as femalebusiness suggested, it was all about money. Keeping Trump in the election as long as possible has been manna for the media.
As for Trump's allegations, let's remember that left up to Mr. Trump, there would be no media unless they reported positive things about him. Sound familiar? His latest is he wants to get rid of Saturday Night Live. Instead of taking the parody in fun as every other candidate does, Donald got his little feelings hurt. I haven't seen it because I despise Alec Baldwin almost as much as Trump.
Trump does not want to be president, he wants to be dictator. Any good dictator knows the first thing you have to control is the press. He probably already has someone lined up to create statues of himself to be placed all over the country if he were elected.

My poor opinion of both candidates has been helpful for noticing bias this election. One of our local new stations is very pro-Clinton and the stories are supportive, and the opposite rings for Trump.

Somewhere along the line, televised news disintegrated into infotainment, which is not journalism. If it's not pure journalism, it doesn't have to adhere to journalistic standards. I don't know this for a fact but I think it corresponded to the rise of shows like Entertainment Tonight. It's a reflection of the general dumbing-down of the quality and quantity of information that's produced and disseminated.
