I don't know if any presidents have ever been scrappers, but I do know Jackie Kennedy made at least one scrapbook. Jackie's mom and stepfather sent Jackie and her sister off to Paris for the summer when they were in college. As a thank you, Jackie and her sister made a scrapbook of the trip for their parents. Jackie's sister did the journaling and Jackie added some beautiful illustrations. Life magazine featured the scrapbook in an issue years' ago. It was very clever and I'm sure the parents treasured it. thank you for posting this info! I'll have to see if I can find any information about it later... I just love stuff like this, about the 'history' and historical aspect of scrapbooking.

ooh, that would be GREAT!! That would make for a fun scrapbook retreat, for sure~
And I'd love to spread all my supplies out on one of those huge banquet table that could seat, like, 40 people!! (and believe me, I COULD spread all my supplies out in space like that- when I scrapbook, it's like a law of physics; my supplies take over any and all available space, lol)

So you admire her for her thinly-veiled contempt for women who have chosen to be stay-at-home moms? "I chose to fulfill my profession" is not contempt veiled or otherwise for people who made a different choice. No, but I think characterizing stay at home moms as just baking cookies and having teas, was seen as a put down.

Perhaps she prefers smashbooks. Her smashbook of this election process would be pretty cool I think!

No, but I think characterizing stay at home moms as just baking cookies and having teas, was seen as a put down. She was referring to what she felt the expectation of her was, to my hearing then and now. Many women throughout the years have felt the pressure to be a stereotypical type of wife and mother (that Pinterest perfection is nothing new), and my interpretation of her statement has always been that she was referring to the expectation she felt was placed on her from that standpoint.

I thought at least ONE person might speculate on what HRC's Refupea psuedonym might be! Well, since it appears I'm close to being outed, I'll share that I enjoy reading wonky position papers from obscure think tanks, long think pieces in the Annals of Foreign Affairs, and repair manuals. (I repair all our kitchen appliances myself.) And I always record Project Runway, which is what drew me here in the first place. Regarding the turn this thread took: I changed my damn NAME so they would vote for my husband for governor, and I STILL got grief about my life choices. And another thing: I rocked those headbands. Go, Cubs.

I don't know about Hillary, but I'm positive that if Trump scrapbooked, his would be the biggest, best, most fabulous scrapbooks ever! Of course, he would never let anyone see them, but you just have to take his word for it. Also, I think he would push Melania(sp?) to scrapbook too. I could totally see her copying someone else's layout, claiming it as her own, and submitting it to a magazine or website. (Sorry, I'm just so sick of all the crazy political stuff that I have to try and laugh about it.)

I could totally see her copying someone else's layout, claiming it as her own, and submitting it to a magazine or website. But HOW IS IT POSSIBLE NOT TO accidentally copy somebody else's layout? We all have the same kinds of photos of our kids...and there's such a limited variety of embellishments these days....

How awesome! I've put Jaqueline's scrapbook into my Amazon wish list--my dh chooses stuff off my lists for presents. It's especially cool how so many books can be bought for mere pennies second hand and for $3 shipping. My mom is a master gardener, and I know she would LOVE to see the White House Rose Garden exhibit at Oak Springs. Her sister is an interior designer--the reason why I chose interior design in college. I would love to visit Bunny Mellon's home and garden. My aunt lives in Virginia. If I continue to feel as good as I do, I hope to visit my aunt with my mom in a few months. My dh and I have been wanting to visit Washington, D.C. together for a while. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that HRC scrapbooks. She is a doting grandmother, and she's done so many extraordinary things and visited so many places. But my guess is if HRC was a pea, her name would be "justasimplescrappinggranny" "nothingtoseehere" "Ilovecookiesandtea" And seriously, women can make statements about their lives without it being an attack on another woman's life. Women in the spotlight are damned no matter what they say--they'll offend somebody. I'd get pretty snappy about that myself.

Actually I despised her for saying that. I was a 30 year old single woman, never married and with intense career at the time. It was rude and disingenuous. She could have made some remark about compromises and /or representing the struggle many woman face between motherhood and career. She didn't have to put down those making other choices. The wife of her husband's opposition was childless with a distinguished career. She didn't try to paint herself as better or different, it was her life. Her husband's opposition in 1992 was George HW Bush, so his wife wasn't childless. During the primary, he ran against Jerry Brown, who I believe was a bachelor. I always remembered the comment as being in response to people judging her for wanting to keep her maiden name and a career. She was basically responding that she wasn't going to fit the mold of the typical political wife at the time. At the time this was said Bob Dole was still a candidate. Elizabeth was on campaign trail.

No. No, I do not...and this is one of the things I do actually admire her for. Wow, the contempt and disdain in her voice. She could've made the comment about women making choices. No, I don't think she doesn't do any type of hobby that would be traditionally a women's hobby. Well, I don't think she has any hobbies. Reading books? Is that a hobby?

I was a stay-at-home mom at the time and took it the way I explained, but a lot of my friends were offended by it. When HRC was the first lady, my mom despised her, but oddly enough, now she is a huge fan. I have never really figured our why the change.

I'm more sympathetic to her frustration now that I've put my career on hold-ish due to motherhood. Being deep in my work at the time, I didn't get it.

While I've never failed to criticize Hillary Clinton when I felt it was warranted, I've always felt like she got a bad rap for the cookie comment. There was even a mention of it in a piece I was reading a few months ago. One of the campaign managers mentioned that they did a really horrific job in preparing her for the media spotlight. They were very focused on keeping Bill's wandering eye from becoming a story and in general she was perceived to be such an asset to the campaign (smart accomplished woman) that they totally underestimated how many segments of the population would see her. I think she'd dealt with quite a bit of criticism over the years about her role and her decision to proceed with her own career and she had a very defensive tone about her choices. It came off horribly. I'll see if I can find the article, it was pretty interesting. ETA - they actually said they were focused on packaging him (not exactly the wandering eye, but that's how I remembered it as it was also talking about Gennifer Flowers). They were discussing how the first image people saw was the 60 Minutes interview of "standing by her man" and then the cookie comment. www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/09/hillary-clinton-2016-60-minutes-1992-214275In other words, there's no way in Hell we can just allow her to be herself. We must mold and package her to be anti-allergenic in every way imaginable. That makes me sad. Somewhere in all that plastic overwrap is a real person. That's why I think Kate McKinnon's depiction of Hillary on SNL is so brilliant. She makes Hillary more relatable. Eta - ah! I forgot the scrapbooks! Someone somewhere is doing this for her. I wouldn't be surprised if she has some kind of family scrapbook that she treasures.
