I went to the auction Saturday night. On the way, we dropped off four boxes of donations to the homeless cat shelter for their next tag sale. Once they were dropped off, the car was empty except for my husband's sports gear that he was going to be using at the gym after he dropped me off. When he's done at the gym, he comes back and hangs out until the auction is done.
I am absolutely thrilled with what I got. I easily could have purchased more but two of the things I got were large so I knew I couldn't fit more in the car.
I'll list stuff like I usually do.
New stuff: 2 pair of new with tag mittens for me. Sometimes I'll wear gloves but I really prefer mittens. The pairs I bought are great because they are the perfect length for me. Often there is too much extra length at the end of the thumbs, but these are just right.
New groceries: A box of cereal and a bag of BBQ chips for my BBQ fiend.
Used/estate stuff: Here are the large things, an uninflated yoga ball and one of those things that you balance on (don't ask me what it's called) that looks like half a yoga ball. We've been wanting one, but no way was I spending almost $100 for one. $5 for the two together, that fits the budget. My youngest has been using it like a chair to do homework. The other big thing was actually at lot of little things in a big box that took up a lot of the backseat. Christmas ornaments, the whole box for $3. If I haven't said it already, I love Christmas ornaments so I was pretty psyched.
Now as much as I really like what I've already listed, this is really the cherry on top: an artisan made, by a dollhouse miniature artisan, Noah's ark with animals and Noah and his wife. The animals and people are hand carved and painted wood. The ark is wood and perhaps some 1/2 thickness foam core. It was modeled after a toy at Colonial Williamsburg and there was a magazine cutout of the original included. There are 61 animals, missing is a lamb. There is also a wall shelf/display that goes with it but you can see some mildew spots on it because of where it was stored. I think I'm just going to have to discard that so the spots don't migrate to anything else. Luckily, everything else is spotless. One of the hedgehogs has some gouges in it but the rest of the animals are perfect. I have collected dollhouse miniatures since I was a child and this really makes me happy like a little kid. I'm going to have to see if I can figure out who the artist is. No exaggeration, it had to have cost hundreds of dollars. I paid $25 for it and was willing to go up to $50 for it. When my kids teach me how to post pictures on the board, I might use the ark as my avitar. For my miniature loving peas, I'm anxious for you to see it. Just thinking about it makes me smile.
Lots of high end chefs knifes and cookware were for sale. Lots of decorative items as well. Most surprising bidding was on two used bed pillows - no thank you. The crowd was fun and there were lots of laughs.
What have you found lately that makes you smile?

I was at a "fancy" second hand clothing store with my friend who I always go with last week. I found a navy jacket there (new with tag) and we sold them in the store. Do all our customers go there to unload their former purchases? I got the $120 jacket for $19.95. That sounds like a lot but it is designer (Frank Lyman) and it isn't a style to come and go but rather just a simple jacket that i will have for a number of years. (I dress very conservatively). Needless to say I was over the moon to get it because I sold the same thing for a LOT more! I wore it out for lunch today and it was perfect. Warm enough but not hot. Perfect. I also love it because it's navy!

So I did good at a regular auction and also an online auction that was nearby. So thankful that SO can get his brothers truck for my purchases, granted I wouldn't be buying these things if I couldn't use it.
A couple weeks ago I picked up a gorgeous quill picture, which is framed really nice and is in great shape. It's an arrangement of fruit. Have the perfect spot in my kitchen for it. I got it for $3.
Then last Saturday they had a king size bed which included headboard, frame and mattresses. No one was bidding on it. Normally at this place they say take what you want leave what you want. Well I really didn't want the mattress/box spring because why pay for it and being king size my dump probably would have charged at least $20 not to mention having to bring it there. Price went down to $1!!!! I was like what if I don't want the mattress, so he goes how about $5. It is definitely a re-do project because I think it will look so much nicer painted.
He also had the two stuffed chairs which are lazy-boy brand though not recliners. They were in really good shape, just need a good cleaning/vacuuming. Paid $10 each. Will go great with a love seat I got a while back that everyone is fighting over that they want it (son/sister).
Then the last items were dressers, a tall, a wide and two side tables or whatever you call them. I got all four pieces for $5!! I definitely want to redo them. For that price if they look crappy I know I can sell them and still make money. Now I can have everything matchy in my bedroom.
Of course now that it's getting cold will be hard to do these projects in my garage even though I have a wood stove out there. Thinking about lugging down to my basement seeing we don't use it (gets wet when it rains) but not sure about venting fumes. Just need to come up with a color. Do I stick with classic or something different like the green I saw when I searched on Pinterest.

Dang hate when it doesn't remind you that you forgot your attachment. Obviously the above are the items I talked about. Though I don't know how to get the chair posted now, ugh.

one of those things that you balance on (don't ask me what it's called) that looks like half a yoga ball It's called a BOSU ball. The name stands for "both side up" meaning you can use it either way for various exercises. an artisan made, by a dollhouse miniature artisan, Noah's ark with animals and Noah and his wife That sounds amazing. I hope we get to see photos.

Very nice finds everyone! Looks like the month is off to a good start. Can't wait to see photos of eastcoastpea's Noah's Ark. If you post a photo, maybe someone can help you determine who the artist was. I'm still recovering from Quilt Festival (be sure and check out the thread with photos, I'll add a few more today), so didn't really plan on getting out much this week. I did stop by a friend's house for a Stash Sale early in the week. Picked up quite a bit of things - cross stitch sampler charts, various patterns & kits, a couple of pieces of fabric and some cross stitch fabric/afghans. Most of the cross stitch stuff will go to one of my sister's. She's on disability and unable to work now, so has taken up cross stitch again to keep herself busy. Some stuff will be listed, while the rest is enjoying its new home in my stash. Yesterday I stopped by Nordstrom Rack since it is next to the grocery. They are having a Clear the Rack sale with an additional 25% off the lowest price. Picked up a gorgeous wool Nordstrom Collection sweater. Originally $248, I got that for just $27! A Eileen Fisher knit top, originally $118 for $33. For DD, I found a sherpa vest for just $20 and a Top Shop knit tee for just $7. There are some really good estate sales this weekend, but I'm most likely going to pass on them. Still fighting this head cold and think I just need to stay home and rest for the next few days. Gotta have some time to actually use up this stash I've collected!

I went to the auction last night. There was supposed to be tons of great, new stuff for Christmas. There was tons of new stuff but as a careful shopper I noticed that many things could be bought for less if you watch sale flyers. I bought only a few things. Everything I bought was new. I bought:
A hand crank flashlight/AM FM radio for $2.50. A bunch of key chains with magnifying glasses on them for .50 cents each. I know a few people who wear cheaters and they are always misplacing them. If they use the key chains they'll at least be able to see. Hard Crack Chocolate Chip Toffee Cookies. Samples were passed around. I didn't like them but my husband did so I bought him a box. Appleletters, the game is made by the same people who make Banannagram. I got it for $2. I bought it for our house. If anyone has played it, how did you like it? Should I have bought more for gifts/party favors? I think they still had some left over so they'll probably be selling them again at some point.
The rest of the auctions up until Christmas are supposed to be 95% new stuff. While I'm very happy with the purchases/bargains that I got, 4 1/2 hours sitting there plus the travel time is a lot. Maybe I'll let the weather determine if I should go to the next one or not.
Do you have anything great you want to share?

I bought 3 coats/jackets this week. Whew! The first was a 3/4 length Kenneth Cole casual coat that I got at Nordstrom Rack. Regular price $250. I paid $65. Then I got a warm winter casual shorty jacket for $9.00 and a dress coat for $12 at the thrift store. I also got a Dale of Norway (retails for over $400) sweater there too. $27 marked down 40%. I bought some David Kahn $200 jeans for $3.50, and White House Black Market jeans for $3.50. They were both bought on 1/2 price day. Today I bought 6 boxes of Dept. 56 slate cobblestone for my Christmas village at $4.99 each (minus my 25% off coupon) So far,November has been very good to me.

Garage salinger with 2 dd who came to visit this weekend. We found an unadvertised estate sale that was being done by the family and they were selling everything really cheap. I'm not sure how much I paid for these but I only had $4 & some change and I came home with money and paid for the kid's stuff too. Everyone there was buzzing about how cheap they were selling everything.

@elaynef - is that a Herend Hungary vase? It looks similar to one I sold on Etsy. They have a following among collectors.

A round Fiesta platter with deco design in cobalt! $1.50! It matches the bowls I bought a few weeks ago. It almost makes up for the matching plates I didn't recognize and didn't buy then.
It doesn't have the dip bowl, il keep searching.

A Chanel skirt that fits perfectly for $30 at consignment. Marked down because the zipper needs to be replaced, which is costing all of $12 at the tailor. Yeah, Chanel=not ever in my budget unless it's this way...

We were visiting our daughter in KY. The family next door was having a yard sale. I was able to pick up 2 bags of clothes for my great nephew and youngest grandson for $15. Must have been 25 pieces all name brand, majority pajamas and a pair of Osh Kosh overalls.

His stuff is awesome and if it's one of his creations it should be signed somewhere on it. His style is folk Artie. I have an Ark by him and an assortment of animals and they make me very happy. Sandy, thanks for pointing me towards Barry Grosscup. I can't be sure it's him, but it might be. I'll have to look for a signature. I know there is something on the wall piece. I haven't really handled the ark because I boxed it and was planning on waiting until after Christmas to display it. I'll be sure to update you when I know for sure.

I went to the auction last night and 95% of the stuff was brand new. It was much better than the week before. Some things were a one of, and other things had stacks of them. Some crazy bargains for sure and people took advantage of it with some people carrying out boxes and boxes of stuff. I missed out on some of the single items because I just wasn't going that high before seeing Black Friday ads. Some other things just weren't in the right sizes.
For new grocery items I got: Some theater box candy for stockings at $1.25 for two boxes. 63 cents a box is pretty reasonable. Stacys Pita Chips for $1 a bag. The best buy date is the end of January so I got bags for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Eve. Bagel chips for 75 cents for two bags.
For clothing and accessories: Burglar style hats for when people are out shoveling. Boxed ugly sweater kits which include the plain sweater. Only $4 each, they were a good buy. I wish they had more sizes so we could have had a family contest. Mens Joe Boxer PJ set for $4.
Conair hairbrush/mirror combo. They were 3 for $1. I'll keep one at work and give the other 2 to the homeless drive at school. I should have bought a bunch for the shelter but I just wasn't thinking clearly at the time because one of the other attendees was being so goofy that I just kept laughing and was distracted. Jar candle Night light
People bought womens robes for $2, 24 inch Frozen Elsa for $2, Nintendo 3DS accessories for $4, $30 flannel shirts for $5. People were definitely in good moods when they left.
Did you go bargain hunting this week?

Had a good Salvation Army day today!
Went there on a mission. Had to find a work appropriate casual outfit. (I wear a uniform to work). I could not wear heels, sneakers, jeans, tee shirts, sweatshirts. The list pretty much summed up my wardrobe. I picked up a great purple Chaps sweater and a pair of dressy flats, to be worn with dress slacks I do own.
But then I also found:
A cute Santa ornament. I can usually pass on ornaments, but this one called to me.
15 books for my early readers. Great condition. Many hardback. Most don't even look like they've been opened.
An LL Bean spring jacket for my ds.
An LL Bean snowpants/snowtop set for my younger dd who likes to play in the snow.
A pink Coach angora scarf.
Thinsulate adult gloves.
Thinsulate adult mittens.
Mr. Potato Head guy & pieces.
Imaginext guys.
I must have hit the store on a great day, because I never find so much good stuff all at once. And prices were totally reasonable. I especially love the LL Bean stuff. Their quality is tops.

I spent the last two Saturday mornings at the motherlode of estate sales... it was exhausting, almost! The woman who owned the house was an ebay-er / hoarder. The first week / weekend of the sale was all stuff that came from a storage unit she had; the house was jam-packed!! There was so much vintage kitschy Christmas stuff it was overwhelming! I was looking for clothes, shoes, etc. (my usual) and I scored:
-- a pair of red Justin roper boots that fit me perfect -- a 1970s kitschy Christmas ornament made with sequins / pins-- it's a gold / brown owl -- a vintage woven picnic basket -- three or four women's scarves, silk with hand-rolled edges -- an assortment of little knickknacks that will be displayed in a vintage type tray (one of the miniature items is a tiny wooden box with a set of 28 dominoes in-- the dominoes are each about 1/2 inch long) -- an unused travel-edition Scrabble game -- a number of pieces of women's clothing, maybe 5-7 ?? I don't remember how many.
all of the above for $30- the clothing was $3 per item; everything else was just sort of bundled together in the price.
The entire backyard was COVERED in cardboard boxes, stacked 5 - 7 boxes high. Those were all things that hadn't even been opened yet, and would be sold the second week, starting on Wednesday or Thursday, through Sunday.
Last Saturday I went back to go through the backyard boxes- I could have started my own ebay shopping / hoarding obsession, if I had bought everything I wanted to!! There were at least 4 boxes crammed full of 'ugly' Christmas sweaters, 1980s - 2000s vintage; I saw two or three boxes full of men's Hawaiian shirts; there were boxes full of men's clothing, all different sizes (shirts, jackets, pants, etc.); piles and piles of men's ties; box after box of women's clothing, all different types and sizes, some of it bona fide vintage, etc. It almost killed me to leave behind a vintage women's silk Japanese bed-jacket style kimono jacket and a box FULL of vintage ladies Pendleton wool suits- pants, skirts, blazers, etc. There were also boxes full of jeans, all brands and sizes. The backyard also had table after table piled up with holiday and Christmas decorations, all different kinds. I didn't even LOOK at any of that, lol.
Everything was being sold for $15 a box; whatever you could fit into a box! I only managed to look through probably maybe, 10 percent (??) of the boxes, because I would dig all the way to the bottom of the box, and most of the boxes I looked in, no one else had even opened yet.
my scores:
-- the BEST: a vintage 1950s - 60s Cyn Les (never heard of this brand) cashmere cardigan, fully lined with lace / netting, with a detachable fur (I think it's rabbit) collar !!! I had to rescue it from the chaos of the hoarding!! Unfortunately, it's a bit too large for me, so now I need to figure out what to do with it, lol. It absolutely needs to go to a good home, and not just the Goodwill store.
-- three 'broomstick' skirts (there were two boxes full) that will be nice for next summer -- an acrylic / wool / angora pullover sweater by the Telluride Clothing Co. very pretty, tan and SW colors. -- a vintage 1970s (?) cardigan with horse's heads knitted into the back and front- this is also just a bit too large for me, unfortunately. -- an insulated Levis denim jacket, very good condition-- fits me perfectly! -- one ladies Hawaiian shirt, very cute colorful design- made in Hawaii -- a pair of capri pants, white denim with a blue toile design on (too small for me yet, but soon!) -- a brand new Cabela's windbreaker-type jacket that doesn't look like it was ever worn...
I got all of this for $15, so basically $1 per item or less, by the time you add it all up.
I don't remember what else I picked up; it was just CRAZY. They were only open for 4 hours each day, and I didn't want to go back on Sunday- it was actually overwhelming, and I started to feel really sorry for the stuff, like I wanted to 'rescue' it if that makes any sense. It's really easy to see how someone could get into that type of a hoarding situation, though-- if I HAD rescued that clothing, I have NO IDEA what I would have done with any of it, so it's a good thing I didn't go back.
Oh, I also got a pair of black Cole Haan leather slip-on loafers the other day at Goodwill, for $3 (it was half-price day). They would have been $50-75 (or more) bought new, so that was a great score, too. They're just a TAD too small, but for $3 I figured I'd risk it.
whew!! I really should NOT go thrifting for a while, now, but it's a sickness!!

crimsoncat05, You're killing me, tables of Christmas stuff and you didn't look. That would be my idea of heaven.
We actually could go to sales together, you go for the clothes and I'm all about the stuff.
Glad you got some good things you can use. And, I totally understand the urge to "rescue."

I went for a quick run through the GW today. I needed a large casserole for the T'Day dressing. I found exactly what I was looking for which was a 5 QT. Pyrex white casserole. It was marked $9.99 but I had a 25% off coupon. Those things are super expensive. I had one before but I broke the lid. The lid alone on EBay was $25. I also got a white dress top and a Ralph Lauren sweater, both for 50% off which was less than $4.00.
Friday is 50% day on most things at the GW, so I did a run through to scope out for Friday.

Funny, my husband found a casserole like that near his boat where neighbors leave stuff for other people. Fast forward to last week, our friend who makes peanut brittle is in need of one and posts on Facebook that they're all too expensive because new ones are too shallow, so today he dropped it off, nice find :-)

Last week I found a gorgeous ladies skirt suit, navy blue with lace décor, sort of a Victorian style. Tag still attached said $90. Thrift store tag said $4. It went perfectly with some vintage-style shoes and a pillbox hat that I wanted to wear for the school musical. Was a little big but we pinned it up for a quick alteration and it was fine. Now I'll probably save it for when my son gets married - sometime in the next 5ish years.
Went to Goodwill on Sat and found a couple pieces of clothing and some earrings that I was looking for to coordinate with some jewelry I already have. It was a crap-shoot - and I crapped. Ha!
And a funny - the other night of the musical, I wore a dress that I had gotten somewhere when my 12yo was a baby, because the style of it had buttons and a pleat across the boobs (vertically), so I opened up the pleats and added snaps and made it into a nursing dress. It's been sitting in my closet forgotten all these years. The style is vintage, so when I was looking for something vintage to wear I pulled it out. I wore it with another hat to opening night. After the show, while out in the commons area "mingling" with the crowd, a good friend from church came over and congratulated me on DD's performance. Then she said, "Hey, I think that's my dress!" Yep, she had donated it to the local thrift store - about 13 years ago. We laughed until we hiccupped.

I think this is a great bargain: 7 yards of Bambi fabric for $1.50 at walmart. I know it isn't premier fabric but it will make a quilt for THE MAC.

LOL at the 'hey, that's my dress!' comment!! The other day I was at 'my' Goodwill scrolling thru the long-sleeved shirts, and saw one that I thought looked a lot like one I thought I had in my dresser... then I realized it was one I donated to that store a couple weeks ago, lol!!

I've been checking out the online yard sales in my area. Saturday a lady posted a set of 4 TV style wooden trays with a rack to hold them for $10. I asked if that was per tray or for all and she confirmed it was for everything. I was so excited! We don't use our dining room to eat in because I made it into a garden grow room several years ago. Not usually a problem, but we like to eat together on holidays and DH doesn't like to eat in the living room. I thought he might if we had some stand alone trays.
