Because food is a nice distraction from all the political talk, let's discuss the dishes we are making for Thanksgiving! We have our big meal at my grandmother's house, and I'm told we are simplifying this year. Each person/household is to bring just one dish. I was assigned the traditional artificial goodness that is Green Bean Casserole. I usually also make either Hashbrown Casserole or Corn Casserole (also sometimes called Corn Souffle), but I guess I'll pass on those. What are you bringing to the Thanksgiving table this year?

I'm hosting my very first Thanksgiving this year. We only celebrate with my local immediate family so there's only 5 of us. We will have turkey, dressing, green beans, seasonal root vegetables, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and rolls.
I'm taking care of the turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, creamed corn and root vegetables. My mom will bring the rolls and dressing and my brother will bring cranberry sauce.
I'll be making the majority of the dishes the day before and keeping them in the fridge until it is time to warm them up. The only thing I'm cooking the day of are the turkey, the gravy, and the green beans.

I'm hosting my very first Thanksgiving this year. Good luck! Sounds like a delicious menu. My grandmother passed the torch of making the dressing last year. My youngest aunt makes it now. That's the one dish that MUST be on the holiday table, IMO.

We are hosting my inlaws so there will be six of us. We haven't planned out the menu yet but no doubt will include, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberrie sauce, sugared cranberries, green salad and maybe sweet potatoes. Last year, In addition to the roasted turkey, DH did a turkey breast on the Big Green Egg and it was so good and smokey. May need to do that again this year!
Pumpkin pie and banana cream pie for dessert!

The cranberry cake recipe I learned here!!! It's been a huge hit since I first made it. I think the recipe is in the recipe section. If not I'll post when I can.

It'll just be the four of us, I think.
I'm still finalising the menu but - turkey, roast sweet potatoes, old-fashioned green beans, mashed turnip, creamed onions, cream corn(homemade), cranberry relish (jello/cranberries/pineapple/mandarin oranges) are what I'm considering. Not sure on dessert - pumpkin pie is a given but I might try a pecan pie this year or go with my standard burgundy (cranberry and blueberry) pie.

This is timely for me -- because I haven't decided! I don't like turkey ... so I always resist making a turkey. I also don't know how many people are actually coming -- there are 4 that are "iffy" (all my sister's children!) But --I have chosen the sangria!! and possibly a cranberry pomegranate terrine. I want to find those colorful carrots and do something with those -- possibly just crudites but maybe scalloped. A green veg -- probably roasted brussels sprouts; corn pudding/souffle for DS; perhaps a spinach salad.

This year I'm bringing the macaroni and cheese. Have you shared your recipe? Belle, how do you make your sweet potatoes. The dish that my mom is "required" to bring is her Sweet Potato Casserole. She does the one with the brown sugar/pecan/butter mixture on the top.

We have Canadian friends visiting over Thanksgiving this year so I feel like I have to go traditional for dinner and make turkey. The last couple of years DH has done lamb on the rotisserie and I've roasted a turkey breast because I have to have stuffing & cranberry sauce.
This year I think it will be deep-fried turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, roasted brussel sprouts, ginger carrots and (maybe) sauteed green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy. Not sure about dessert yet but leaning to a ginger snap crust pumpkin cheesecake and an apple tart.

Thanksgiving is always tough around here as my daughter is in Nutcracker. Her first show is Wednesday night and she'll have 7 shows that weekend. We'll have a half a dozen relatives in town to see her. My husband's a super star and does most of the heavy lifting for Thanksgiving dinner and taking care of the house guests. My mom will bake the pies and is always in charge of the gravy - don't like it and can't make it. We do a pretty traditional menu - turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole and a veggie or salad. I'm thinking of roasting brussel sprouts, but my kids really don't love them - we'll probably have boring broccoli.

The restaurant that we ordered our dinner from last year was sold out when I called last week (a week earlier than I called last year!), so we had to figure out a plan B. I ended up ordering a roasted whole turkey from Honeybaked ham (we have ordered the sliced turkey before, but it has the sweet glaze on it and that just doesn't work for me). I also ordered a small ham, because I don't want 4 days of turkey! We will have to make our sides this year - mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing (I like mine better than what we got last year), green bean casserole for dh, probably corn for the rest, some kind of rolls, relish tray (pickles and olives), cranberry sauce (from the can, as it should be!), and for dessert, my mom's pumpkin pie. The filling recipe is the normal one, but she does make the best pie crust!

This year it looks like I'm going to be in charge of two Thanksgiving dinners. The day of it will just be my immediate family and my parents (which feels very weird because I have six siblings. They are all just unable to come this year.) So with just eight for dinner and just my mom to help cook is going to be kind of crazy.
We've also been asked to be in charge of the ILs dinner which will probably happen two days later. That will be crazy in a different way. I'll have lots of help with the food, but it's usually dinner for over 30. We have to have two turkeys and often a ham as well. Six to eight pies. 10lbs of potatoes, etc. It's a lot of work. I'm also annoyed because they just put us in charge of the last family gathering.

We go to my parents' house for Thanksgiving, so I have no responsibility for the turkey, thank goodness. I will bring several carbs that my family just can't live without: sausage cornbread stuffing, PW's mashed potatoes, and mini pumpkin gingersnap cheesecakes.

My sister has all the family at her house but me and my sister in law make a lot to help her out. I will be making corn casserole, sweet potato casserole, Oreo cookie dessert, frosted banana bars and I make the ham.

We live far from everybody so we do it all. This year we are getting the smallest turkey we can find and going big on the side dishes: - Stuffing (from the other thread, I think I am going to try something with apples)
- Green bean casserole (my husband is from the midwest and my children are genetically predisposed to love it)
- Scalloped yams with praline topping (insanely delicious, almost as good as chocolate)
- Spinach salad (I need something light)
- Green beans almondine (more light food)
- Pies (apple & pumpkin)

We (SO and I) live far away from our families, so last year and this year we've hosted a friendsgiving for other people who aren't able to travel at Thanksgiving (or would prefer to not be with family, that's their prerogative). Dinner will be turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, stuffing, and rolls. All simple, but all delicious! Dessert will be pies - for sure pumpkin for me. Maybe an apple pie if SO wants it. I'll be watching the Vikings game earlier in the day, so I'll have some meat and crackers and other snacky things for during that if anyone comes over to watch with me.

I don't do the clean up. After I have already done the dishes for two days, so I happily let the boys take care of it. I do that every night, so no one complains.
