Easy to blow taxpayer money when you haven't paid taxes, isn't it?

I also think, because he is not a career politician, he has NO IDEA about how the office of the president works. He is a very powerful businessman who now thinks he is not accountable to anyone. He has always had his way. Should be an interesting ride.

Where has anyone (here on this board, or even anywhere else?) ever made that claim? By people complaining about the costs and logistical disruptions to NYC because that's where the Trumps reside. I agree, it is going to be a nightmare, but it is what it is. I agree that the logistical disruptions are what they are. I don't like them and don't think I'm alone in that, but that's not my big problem with all this. And I can only speak for myself, but by expressing my opinions about their personal responsibility for extraordinary costs, I did not mean to imply that the Trumps were not free to run for President because of where they are from. And I'm positively positive I never said anything like that outright. I'm honestly not trying to argue with you on a personal level at all. I just won't be quiet about unethical things that Trump is planning on doing. If he actually does them, I'll object even more vehemently. While morality is subjective, there are some pretty clear ethics guidelines for Presidential actions. And if this administration does one good thing, maybe it will be that it helps our country clarify (and then legislate) exactly what a President can and can't do WRT business interests, at least. There's no way our founding fathers could have foreseen the complications of someone like Trump actually winning the office of the President. Heck, even 20 years ago, I don't think anyone could have predicted these kinds of situations that Trump is refusing to follow unofficial protocol and guidelines on. No matter how long his administration makes it, it's going to be a long and tortuous ride!

But you guys, Obama. And golf! Golf!!!! And emails!!!!1 Pay no attention to the millions a year the Trumps will cost the taxpayers in having to have 2 separate residences to protect nor in having midtown traffic disrupted on a frequent basis. Emails, you guys. C'mon. Focus! That article that Enna linked up is an EXCELLENT read on just a tiny glimpse of what's involved in all this. Everyone really should read it.

If people continue to speak out, the politicians will not be able to ignore this. Absolutely. And if they are going to insist on way more special arrangements and severe disruptions to NYC, then they can damned well pay for it themselves. Trump and many others have raged and harped for years about the federal deficit, the state of our economy, and Government waste. They don't get to ignore that issue now and demand that the little people pay for something extra and out of the ordinary. Especially if the very early preliminary cost estimates are already in the tens of millions of dollars. If they're paying, it's all good. If they're not, the issue will continue to be a problem. Then the Obamas need to pay for all of the overseas trips the First Lady took with Sascha and Malia, and Michelle's mother during spring and summer breaks. I'm not Trump supporter, but as long as there are no rules, laws, or regulations on what the first family is or isn't allowed to do, then they have the right to do what they want. And I'll say again, there are no regulations that say a person cannot run for President if they are a NYC resident. Presidents and their families ALREADY pay for their own vacation trips - just not the detail that travels w/them. And you get that a once per year trip is not nearly in the same ballpark and running two residences peopled w/the President's family FULL TIME!>>!>!> RIght?

No. It doesn't have to be that way. If Trump cared one iota about service to this country, he would move his family as President w/children have done before him. He would not expect two peopled residences to be protected on this country's dime to which he has allegedly contributed NADA for the past 10 years (prove us wrong, release the returns!) I'm sorry, but the hypocrisy is at DefCon1 today.

I have been saying something similar to my friends - that at the very least I hope his presidency will be a wake-up call to Washington and they will realize they need to work together and make our country a better place. Almost like an alcoholic needing to hit rock bottom, if that makes sense. (And I'm not trying to argue with you either. I do feel like a bunch of people - general people - voted for him and didn't think everything through, and now all these issues are popping up and no one knows how to deal with them.)

But it IS what it is - until there is some kind of regulation on what they can and can't do. It sucks, it really does - but large amounts of people (who were hook winked, imo) voted for this man. What did they expect? I did not support him; I did not vote for him; I did not buy his BS - but a lot of people did, and now we have him for at least 4 years.

You know some of the people wandering the halls of the State mental hospitals? They didn't make it back. You know some of the people in the morgues and cemeteries? They didn't make it back. That's an awfully big risk to take w/a country.

I think it's ridiculous that the Trump sprog can't move schools, FFS, he's 10yo, he's not in the final year of a university degree, he's still eating paste and pulling girl's hair. There's nothing very disruptive about changing schools at that age, I did it at 10 and so do millions of other kids...and isn't your election cycle always at the same time? haven't many of the other President's kids been through the same thing without being treated like special snowflakes? Colour me not surprised that Trump thinks his kid is different. It's not like he needs an education anyway he'll be just like the others and work in Daddy's company no matter what his academic record is like.
Plus they should have discussed this as a family and if everyone wasn't on board (like Melania being first lady)...then don't proceed. He's just going to pick the parts of the job he wants to do and he & Melania will ignore the other bits they don't like.
Here's an idea - let's all do that! I want to be a nurse, but I'm not real fond of emptying bed pans, so I'll just go to work tomorrow and tell them I won't be giving out bed pans anymore. I wonder what would happen...oh yeah, I'd probably get the sack if I refused to fulfil parts of my job that everyone else in the role prior to me did. But Trump supporters seem to think it's just fine to pick and choose, don't want to live in the White House?...no problem, wife doesn't want to be FL? - that's fine, your daughter can do it. Instead of admitting they made a mistake, Trump voters are now going to feed the monster and create and even bigger monster.

But I'm trying like hell to hold on to my faith in our system of checks and balances and the decency of most of the people in the U.S. Given the track record on both sides of the aisle in Congress, I think it's going to take hard work and relentless pressure from all of us to make them play by the rules and put a stop to what Trump is already trying to do. I'm now genuflecting like Biden in that video, btw Save

If this is true, this looks really terrible. FLOTUS is a huge, supportive role at the WH. You can't phone it in, or just show up "as needed." I realize she's concerned for Barron, but he'll be more protected if the family stays together in Washington. I agree. I think they should have thought about this before running for president. IMO, them not living in the White House and him wanting to be in NY every weekend sounds to me like he a) doesn't understand the scope of the job and b) isn't "all in" for the job.

As long as Trump pays the extra security costs, I don't see a problem. It had crossed my mind that they might try to helicopter/jet him back and forth from Washington to New York every day which would be worse I'd think. If what I heard about him charging over $3 million to the taxpayers for the Secret Service to fly in his plane to protect him during his campaign, I wouldn't count on him paying for it. He is going to bleed this country dry before this nightmare is over. Isn't it wonderful that the man who does not pay taxes has no problem taking money from the little folks to support his lifestyle? I also read that KellyAnne referred to the job of being President as his "day job". He asked how much time he has to spend at the White House. All of those people that have been screaming about the time that other Presidents have taken away from the WH had better get their tallying pens lined up. I have a feeling that they are going to be put to a lot of use.

It Is what it is...except for the hundreds of people who work and live in Trump Tower (and probably pay more money than I make in a year to do so) who will be inconvenienced and subjected to daily security measures, stoppages, and lockdowns every time Barron goes in and out to school. Not to mention the businesses that will most likely lose thousands because people won't want to enter them.
But it is what it is because Trump says so.
I think it's a really shitty thing to do to people who didn't have a say and just want to live their daily lives.

Truthfully, I don't care if Melania acts as FLOTUS or if Ivanka does. Personally, I would rather have Mrs. Pence step in just because she has more experience as a political wife and First Lady. Once again, the hypocrisy from the right is stunning considering all the flak the Obama's got. I feel badly for the people of NYC because this is going to be a nightmare for them. I think that the Trumps should have to pay for any extraordinary expenses beyond what other first families have incurred.
And I agree that bigger issue is the conflict with Trump's businesses and kids being part of the administration. I hope that issue is ironed out quickly and ethically but I don't have much hope for that.
I think this administration will end up being a huge cluster and hope the Democrats and/moderates take control of Congress in two years.

But... but... but.... How will Melania implement her totally awesome "anti-bullying" agenda as FLOTUS if she's not living in the White House? Because that's just code for hiding Big D's cell phone and Twitter password, right?!?!?
These people disgust me on so, so many levels.

Ok. I can't stand Trump and am dismayed that he's our president. But the article only says the plan is for Mrs Trump and Barron to stay through the end of the school year. Yes it will cost us, the tax payers, but if it's only for 5-6 months I'm ok with it. How many of us would want to uproot our child mid-year, especially considering how turned upside down the child's life is already? . Now come May/June when school is out they need to pack up and move to D.C. If not, that's when this tax payer will be irritated. I read that she may never move to Washington. It's tbd. I could easily see them saying until summer at this point but then when things are in place it changes to "she is staying in NY."

I know some people in NYC want them to leave. The city isn't set up for the street closures it causes. Maybe they should have discussed the negatives of being the President. This is true. Every time the POTUS comes to town, many average workers (like cab drivers) lose a lot of money due to the inevitable gridlock. They close entire streets down for up to an hour to allow the escort through. Boats and ferries are stopped on the waterways for the helicopter to come in -- and POTUS is accompanied by at least three advance helicopters for protection. I don't know what will happen if it is a weekly event. NYC just doesn't have the room on the already crowded transportation grid for this. I genuinely feel very sympathetic towards his son. Unfortunately, living in the White House is a big, well known part of the job that dad and mom maybe should have discussed previously.

It will cost more. Did you read the article Enna posted? They will be at Trump tower 24/7 and also vetting and searching DAILY the homes and businesses in Trump tower. People come in and out of that building a hundred times a day. It will cost much, much more with more manpower needed and the logistical nightmare it's going to cause. Not only that but it will cost the businesses that are operating from there a fortune in possible loss of business. Lets face it, not many of their clients are going to put up with that much inconvenience....they're likely to find another company at a different location to deal with. I agree with the loss of business with 5th Avenue so jammed up. I was watching The View the other day and Whoppi said it took her 3 hours to get to the studio that day because of it. That is just crazy!
