Delsym only requires half the serving size as robutussum, that's how strong it is.

My DH swears by Delsym. I try to avoid it simply because I loathe any fake grape flavoring and the super sweet fake orange isn't much better. But when I'm really miserable I give in and use the orange one.

Delsym is usually my recommendation. It's a long acting form of Dextromethorphan which is cough suppressant found in many OTC remedies.
You may be able to find a pharmacy that will sell a Codeine based cough syrup (4 oz only) from the pharmacy. Many places stopped carrying it due to abuse potential, but some places will still sell it without a prescription. You will have to sign a form likely and they will record your DL, but it may be worth trying also.

Delsym with Chloraseptic lozenges. I've never found a better combination. DD just got over a cough last lasted for 3 weeks and it's the only way she could sleep.

I was thinking of NyQuil, can't edit. But she only wants a cough suppressant. Don't take all the other stuff if you don't need it.

This is our go to, recommended by the kids pediatrician many years ago. I can't remember if it is cough suppressant or expectorant or both. Depends on what your situation needs.

I hate to take it because of the "hangover" I feel the next day, but Nyquil does work better than anything else for me. I have to be really sick to take it though. My usual go to is Mucinex. My doctors recommend Delsym but it did not help me at all.

None of them, including Delsym, works for me. I find good old fashioned vapo-rub works to get me to sleep, and then I will take something in pill form to hopefully keep the cough suppressed while I sleep. If I wake up, I re-vaporub.

Delsym. We had a good bout of the crud in our house and I bought some for myself and DD. It was the only thing that helped my kid sleep. I only took it for a couple nights myself but it did help. And I think the orange is definitely nastier than the grape.

I swear by the Walgreens brand of cold and flu medicine. It is a red liquid and its on the top shelf behind the pharmacist's counter. You have to be 18 to buy it - and have to show drivers license and sign for it. It works great!
