I tried a new recipe for a sweet potato casserole and it was a hit. I actually altered a recipe I found but everyone loved it except my two sons who believe nuts are a food group that should not be eaten unless alone. I know the rules but I don't have an actual recipe to share.
I used 6 medium sized sweet potatoes. I prepped them in the instant pot and then skinned them. Mashed them up with (all measurements are approximations) 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of maple syrup, two eggs, 1/2 cup of melted butter and some cinnamon. The topping was 1/2 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of butter and 3/4 cup of chopped walnuts. Threw them in the oven at 350 for about 35 minutes.

I'm cooking a turkey today but yesterday we were at my aunts and she did two turkey breasts. We were all like "ugh" but they were AMAZING!!!! She used a dry brine, which I had never heard of before, and they were super moist. DH couldn't stop raving about it. I got the recipe and will be cooking one in the near future.

I am a good cook but am NOT good at breads. But I made Bobby Flay's Parker house rolls and they were amazing!!! Perfectly crusty on the outside and light on the inside.
We also tried a new recipe this year for green bean casserole with Swiss cheese. We upped the amount of green beans yesterday (doubled the amount) and they were awesome!

I too, made a new sweet potato casserole that everyone loved. Even the non sweet potato crowd. I used Trisha Yearwood's recipe for sweet potato pudding. I also tweaked the green bean casserole by adding sharp cheddar into the mixture and then topping it with the dried onions and more cheese for the last five minutes or so.

I also tried a new sweet potato casserole recipe and it turned out amazing! Everyone, including my non-sweet potato loving husband loved it! MIL reminded me 3 times to send her the recipe last night. allrecipes.com/recipe/21261/yummy-sweet-potato-casserole/I used the above recipe and subbed condensed milk for the regular milk and used 1 tsp of vanilla instead of just a half plus used canned SP's instead of cooking them myself.

DH did the turkey on the wood pellet grill this year and it was amazing! Just a little smoke for flavor and then regular cooking. We cooked it breast side down and all the meat was tender and moist - but it cooked much faster than it was supposed to, so I was scrambling a little to get everything else on the table at the end.

I just made the standards.. and my kids were happy with it all.. overnight no knead rolls from joy of cooking, stuffing, from joy of cooking, grandma's pumpkin and apple pies, pan gravy, steamed broccoli, turkey, and the biggest hit was a friend gave me two very very fine pinot noir bottles.. like $80 wines.. when I gave her a pumpkin pie. they were probably left over from a fundraiser, as she is an event coordinator.. but boy. were those good. we just have the 5 of us.. so very simple.

I can't take credit but my sister made the Pioneer Woman's brined turkey. First I was really afraid it was going to make for salty gravy then I was really worried when I watched her rub it with a whole stick of butter part way through the cooking time. It was AMAZING!!!!!! Probably the best turkey I've ever eaten!

Dh does the turkey (brined and roasted covered with cheesecloth and butter basted) and it was outstanding. It's the same way he always makes it, but was extra yummy this year.
New and a surprise hit were the green beans which I sautéed and tossed with lemon, dill and sliced almonds. Yum!

I made Parker House rolls for the first time. They turned out well. I just made way too many - we had quite a roll mountain 😀.

My hit was going to a wonderful, small, up-scale restaurant that hosted a pay-what-you-can Thanksgiving meal. Everything was donated by local farms, food suppliers, the restaurant, and its chefs. All money collected was donated to the local food pantry and volunteer center. The food was delicious and the atmosphere warm and inviting. Bonus- helping others and no dirty dishes!

I had a 29 lb turkey which I brined for 30 hours...it was amazing!!! I got so many compliments on it. The breast was so tender and juicy. And it cooked in just 4.5 hours. I was expecting at least a couple of hours more.
My cranberry sauce was really good too. Fresh cranberries, orange juice, brown sugar, fresh ginger, raspberries and cinnamon.

My family is very small, and half had other plans this year, leaving just my mom and I. We wound up going out to a nice restaurant in our area that was serving a Thanksgiving menu and it was excellent. I was so full that couldn't eat the pie there, so it's waiting for me in a to-go box. Almost everyone there was dressed nicely, and it was nice to not see a sea of blue jeans for a change.
We then went to our respective homes for a nice nap, and then last night we went to see Allied and were ready for some popcorn by then. The whole day was enjoyable. We'll make our standard turkey feast soon, when all of us can attend.

The PW Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes were a winner! They were smooth and creamy even after the reheat. It did take longer to reheat than the recipe indicated it should. But it was fine, since we were delayed and everything was keeping warm in the oven for an extra 20 minutes. I followed the recipe (which I don't usually do) except I used regular table salt instead of Lawry's and I used an electric mixer instead of a masher. I think I redeemed myself after an epic MP fail a few years ago. ETA: Thanks to the pea who originally linked the recipe.

I did the regular menu, but I made everything but the turkey and gravy the day before. I put the turkey in at 11 and the sides in at 3 and made the gravy as the turkey rested. I did turkey and gravy dishes while my husband carved the turkey and my boys got everything onto the table. It was the simplest day of cooking ever.

We had all of our standard favorites made the usual way. The only thing we changed was baking the dressing in a bundt pan. It turned out great! Lots of crusty edges! Everyone loved it!

My butternut squash mushroom stuffing from The food network was a huge hit!
My daughter made a vanilla bourbon pecan pie that was the first pie gone.. and the only home made pie. My sister is a real estate agent and has a huge pie party on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving where she gives all her clients these fabulous pies. SO we had 4 of them and my daughters and everyone raved about my daughters and it was the first to go!
She was really thrilled last year different crowd she made an amazing cherry pie and she and I were the only ones who tried it!
The turkey was outstanding one of the best I've ever had!

I volunteered to take funeral (cheesy) potatoes because frankly, I am not a huge fan of mashed potatoes.
There were no leftovers.

This was a good year for us. The grilled/smoked spatchcocked turkey was very good. Thanks to the pea recommendations, the make ahead gravy and cornbread stuffing were a hit.

I had to make some drastic changes to my traditional menu this year due to DH being on a restricted diet for his kidney disease. I've done Alton Brown's brined turkey since the year he first did it on Good Eats. Sodium restrictions meant no brine, though, so I tried something else. I chose to make this instead. I skipped the brining and fridge drying completely and just went with the butter flying and glazing. It was superb! I expected the meat to be much drier than it is when you brine it, but this was not the case. I cooked it for 70 minutes and the temp at that point was 160*. I glazed it 3 times, 10 minutes apart, and the final temp was 170* in the thigh, which should have been too dry. Given my history of not placing the thermometer in the right place, I was pretty comfortable h going more by time than temp and I guess that was the right call. Next year, I'd like to make sure the bird is thawed several days ahead so I can try the dried skin technique. The skin was good this year, but not as fabulous as I'd thought it might be. The meat, though, was out of this world juicy. Marcy
