I make an herb-marinated turkey, and one of the ingredients in the marinade is Spike. I usually have trouble every year finding all the fresh herbs that go into it, especially the sage. If I don't get it early enough, all the sage is sold out in all my grocery stores. I finally got smart and planted it in my yard two years ago. Once I get moved, I am planting all the required herbs in my garden so that I don't have to stress over ingredients. So yippee, I had all the fresh herbs I needed. Unfortunately, I was out of Spike.
I went to 4 grocery stores last weekend and none had it. I ended up ordering it on Amazon, and it should have been delivered by Wednesday for me to marinade the turkey overnight. For some reason, they had it scheduled for Friday, yesterday, instead. Change of plans. No big deal. I wasn't serving the turkey to guests, I'm making it mainly to make soup from it because it makes the best turkey soup I've ever eaten. The marinade that cooks in the turkey bag is amazing and becomes the start for my soup base. I figured I would make the marinade Friday, add the Spike and get the turkey in a bag to leave it the required 12 hours overnight. I should be cooking that bird right now.
The Amazon link said my Spike was on its way to be delivered before 8 pm last night. I waited, and waited, and waited. Finally the doorbell rang. Was it my Spike? Nope. It was something that I ordered on Amazon during the Black Friday sale earlier that morning. It was delivered the same day that I ordered it! That shocked me. I kept checking the site for my shipping schedule and at 1 minute to 8pm, it changed from being on its way to being delayed until NEXT TUESDAY.
I cannot hold this fresh turkey until next week. I also cannot leave the Spike out of the marinade. Who knew it was so hard to find? I've never had difficulty in the past, but I guess grocery stores either sold out or are no longer carrying it. There was a ton of Mrs. Dash stuff, and a few types of other seasoning combinations, but I want Spike.
So finally to my question: Do you use Spike and do you know where I can find it in an actual store today? Do you think Trader Joe's would have it? I am going to get showered and head out in about an hour to go hunt some down. Maybe Whole Foods?
If you have purchased some recently, please tell me where you found it! I have been craving this soup for weeks now. I know I can make it with chicken any time of year, but for some reason, I hold off until I can get a turkey. So now I have my turkey, and I want my soup!!
