I am scheduled on the 13th to have my cyst removed from the top of my wrist. I am so torn. It only bothers me on the weekends. This is the time that I am quilting and physically moving more. During the week at work I am at a desk. Is it crazy to have it removed just so it dies t hurt during fun time? And to have a scar besides? Our deductible has been met. I have had to traumatic incidents. One 20+ years ago. As I have gotten older it only bothered me a few times a year. I damaged it again last January. Since then it is become much more frequent to now all weekend. I just wonder, will it keep getting worse, then when it is really bad I will have to pay the deductible.
Has anyone had this surgery done and had improvement?

My son had one under his wrist. It just stuck out there and we had it seen (we were at the hospital for something else at the time and had the Ped on call with us) and he thought it would just go away naturally. It did. Yours must be much more serious than his was. It never bothered him or anything but he was kind of young when it happened. He could still write with it and said it didn't bother him so if it bugs you, you have met your deductible why not get it taken out? The scar will be minimal I am sure.

Yes I had a ganglion cyst removed while I was having CMC thumb joint arthroplasty with tendon transfer. It had started to bother me and since I was having surgery on my hand anyway I had it removed. Since you have met your deductible this year I would have it done.

I had a pretty big one on the top of my wrist when I was in college. It stayed there for years and just disappeared. Back in the day I heard some doctors would take a book and give it a good whack.

DD (17) has one, but her's involves some nerves. She had a small fracture in her wrist and the cyst grew from that. Likely a gymnastics injury--who says kids aren't tough! I never remember her complaining about her wrist for more than a few days here and there.
The surgeon wasn't sure he could get clean margins without causing some nerve damage. So she elected to leave it. It comes and goes. It will swell up pretty large, then pop. Then it will be fine for months and then grow again. They used to call them Bible thumper cysts because slamming a heavy object on them would break open the cyst and allow it to drain.
The surgeon did offer to drain the cyst surgically, but felt that it would reoccur. Maybe that would be an option for you? It could be worth a try.

I had a large one removed from the top of my wrist about 15 years ago. I was having lots of issues with strength in my hand. Since removal my wrist and hand are much stronger. Occasionally I'll strain my wrist doing some physical activity and the pain returns and the lump reappears for a day or so but then it returns to normal again. I'm very glad I had mine removed.

If it gets worse in a few months, you'll kick yourself for not having it done while your deductible was met.

I had one removed from the back of my hand years ago. My tendon would rub against/across it when I flexed my hand, which became painful at times but I could have lived with it. I'm glad I had it removed though. It's a super easy surgery and the scar isn't a big deal. Good luck to you!

I had a small one removed from the palm of my hand - with local injection and needle extraction (by hand surgeon). If it's bothering you, I'd have it removed. Sounds like you've had it for a while.

I had one but they shot it with something and it went down significantly. Now my niece has one. I have a feeling she will need surgery on it. It's grown pretty fast.

I had mine removed also. Was very nervous since it's my dominant hand, but was causing me a lot of problems and occasionally my wrist would give out strength-wise (would go to push a door and my wrist would just flop.)
Had good results from the surgery, my surgeon casts them to protect so I needed a couple weeks of physical therapy to get it moving correctly. It felt awesome, no pain at all. Totally worth it. Scar was a couple inches, but faded and blends with the lines of my wrist. To be honest unless I flex my wrist all the way forward it can't be seen.
Unfortunately I reinjured so mine acts up every now and again. If I were you i'd absolutely do it.

If it's bothering you on that regular of an interval, I say get it taken care of while it's not such a financial hit.
DD sent me a picture a week or so ago asking what a bump on her hand/wrist was. Yep, ganglion cyst. She recently started working at SB again and I think that between that and her drawing, it just got aggravated. It's gone down but I told her about the "bible thump" treatment of olden days and she said "no way! I would rather get a needle stuck in it!" She's going to talk to her PCP about it the next time she goes in just to be sure, but we're both fairly positive it's a ganglion cyst.

Yes, I would get it removed. You have met your deductible and the incision is very small. It could potentially get much worse and then you will be sorry you didn't do it. I have a friend who had one and she didn't realize how much it was affecting her daily activities until she had it removed.

I had one on my ankle, caused/triggered by an injured tendon. I had PT for it, ankle got stronger but the cyst was still there. I finally had it drained by an orthopedic doctor, in office. He wasn't able to get all of it and after a year it came back. This time it wasn't causing any pain and I recently noticed it has gone almost completely away. Hopefully it stays away this time??
I think wrist would bother me more then ankle and if you've already met the deductible..

My sister and I both had them in our 20''s, early 30's.
This was a few years ago.
She had surgery. It was quite incapacitating, had in some sort of cast or brace for a few weeks. (She has a great story about a job interview and her MIL having to help her put on her panty hose)
I did not have the surgery, but mine would come and go hurt and not hurt, pop and feel fine.
Hers came back, and then eventually went away. Mine also went away, neither of us have had one in 10-15 years.

If it's affecting your quality of life, I'd have the surgery. You've met your deductible and it would allow you to do the things you enjoy.

This is exactly what I heard too. I had one years ago on the top of my wrist and the doctor said I could have it removed or take a wait and see approach. It didn't hurt, it was just a nuisance to see. I slipped on ice one day and threw my hands out as I was going down. The force of the fall popped the cyst, nothing else was broken and it has never returned. If it is causing you pain, if only during fun things, I would definitely think it was worth having removed.

I had one on my wrist. My husband held my hand down and wacked it with a book. Worked too. Seems crazy to me to have surgery when you can just smack it and fix the issue (probably).

I'm currently on my fourth. The first one they attempted to aspirate with no luck. Scheduled surgery but it was inadvertently smashed during a family wrestling moment. Hurt like words I can't say in this board . It grew back eventually and we went straight to surgical removal. It was removed with minor complications. My hand surgeon loves me. I apparently grow them well and they prefer to wrap around my wrist bone so he has to dig deep for them. . Third one reappeared a couple years later. Went back in for surgery. I now have a fourth one but it is not bothering me. No pain, no interfering with the use of my hand, so we are leaving it alone. I know people who have had luck just smashing them, aspirating them, and I believe there is a steroid injection that might work. It appears I just like to grow them so the method of removal doesn't matter . That said, I would do the surgery. At least then They give me pain pills. If you smash it there are no pain pills
