obligated to return it? I know the answer is I should return it but it is annoying because it was their mistake and now I have to go to their website and print out a return label and put it in a mailer (the original mailer is ripped open now) and take it to UPS.
They apparently knew there was a potential mix up because they sent me an email saying my order was being redelivered and if I received a duplicate order I should do the return mailer thing and send it back.

Not really.
It's happened to me several times and when I have called or emailed they just told me to keep it.

Once they sent me 5 of something but only charged me for the one I actually ordered. I tried to tell them they sent me too many, so they credited my account for all of them... then I had to re explain that no I didn't want a refund, I don't need 4 extra Wii controllers, it took more emails than it should have to get the message across... probably not worth it.
More recently I ordered a book for a 3rd party seller, they sent the wrong one. They would credit my $6 if I sent the wrong book back, but didn't have the actual book in stock (used book) so I'd have to buy it somewhere else anyway. So I never sent the wrong book back... I figured it was my $6 and not worth driving to the UPS store...

Yes, I'm afraid so. I'd feel guilty otherwise. Mistakes happen. If they had mistakenly charged you twice you' d want them to credit you. Although the two times that happened to me they told me just to keep the duplicate. But you should be able to call UPS and have them pick it up from your house. I definitely wouldn't do it until after the holidays, though, when I had more time. Sorry about that!

I ordered a long board for my DD's boyfriend for christmas a few years ago. It stayed in the box for a few weeks until I decided to take a look. There were two inside the one box. We called them and they wanted us to send it back but we didn't want to make the trip to UPS. My then DH told them they could send UPS for it and they could take it after christmas but until then we needed the box. They told us to keep it so we gave it to boyfriend's brother.

My FIL ordered the kid's gifts through Amazon. DD#2 wanted a hammock - we received 3. DD#2&3 wanted bounce balls - we received 5. Oldest DD wanted a microscope and a lap loom - we received 2 of each. I asked FIL to verify that they didn't charge him because that is a LOT of extra packages. The shipments all came at different times and everything in individual boxes. Some of them were wrapped and some weren't. It's the weirdest thing and I hope he didn't jack it up because I don't want to deal with returning it all.

Legally you're not required to return it but it's always nice to let them know. The weird one for me was when I received mystery under wear I hadn't ordered and spent a lot of time with customer service trying to see if my account was hacked but no it was just some weird mistake and they told me to keep it as a gift, ha! What a weird gift Amazon!

Yes, I would feel obligated to contact them & return if requested. I would be asking for UPS (or other services) to pick up from my home. If not possible, I would take to a UPS office while running errands.

I'd send an email to let them know. It's the honest thing to do.

Not really. It's happened to me several times and when I have called or emailed they just told me to keep it. That's what they told me too. We had a situation that they sent us two of a fairly expensive item. Even though I gave them the right address, it never arrived. I called and asked, they sent another one that arrived pronto. Then, a couple of days later, the original package showed up. Turns out it went to my parent's old address, where the owners then took it to my dad's brother's business, who then dropped it off at my dad's practice, and one of the assistants ran it by my parent's house on the way home. Small town weirdness. I called Amazon and told them that we ended up with both and she told me to just keep it. We did and my mom found someone on the angel tree at her church that wanted the item so she donated the second one.

Absolutely! Amazon has been so good at accepting returns... in addition, I could not enjoy anything that I have stolen. ( to me, keeping it would be theft by deception)

My daughter ordered something from Inu Inu with Amazon pay. They took eight weeks to ship the stuff and missed her birthday. I got a full refund and was told I could keep the stuff, but I returned it. It didn't feel right keeping it.
In your situation, I would send it back at your convenience, even if it is after Christmas. Also, you can give it to your UPS driver. Oddly ours is named Bob just like the commercial!

I usually always let someone know if I've received more than I ordered, primarily because I've had to reconcile inventory when I worked retail. Usually, I get to keep the extra, but I will be happy to return it if they make arrangements for me to do so at no cost and minimal inconvenience.
This one time, I ordered a baby monitor from Target off a registry for a shower. They cancelled it. But then it showed in stock. So I ordered it again. And they cancelled it again.
And then five showed up at my house.
All in separate boxes.
Never charged to my card.
Then I tried to TAKE THEM BACK TO TARGET, which they could not handle because there was no valid order attached to the invoice. The poor customer service girl called Target herself. They couldn't tell her what to do. She finally said, "Well, they said you can keep them, or I can take them from you and do something with them."
Since apparently, as far as Target was concerned, they never sent them to me and they apparently weren't missing five, I kept 'em. (And gave them all to the intended recipient-- it was her first kid and she was excited to get all of them, because it meant she could keep one at home and have one to travel and take one to all of the new grandparents' houses.)

I agree. Mistakes happen. Once they told me to keep the item. Once they asked me to return it. It's really not much hassle.

Target must have some odd software, once I was charged $10 for something I never bought. Since it was something I never bought they could not credit me the $10, so after an hour of dealing with them I gave up and did a chargeback on my credit card.

I'd ask the company to send me a UPS pickup notice instead of a standard return label. That way you don't have to deal with the hassle of a drop off.

I have had them send more of what I ordered than I expected, and they told me to keep what was sent - but it wasn't an expensive item.
If they asked for the duplicate back I would send it back. I would be afraid if I didn't they would flag my account as uncooperative

Yes. We ordered a TV a few years ago, and it was delivered a day early... then again on the delivery date. I'm amazed at how many people asked what we were going to do with our "extra" TV?!!
We called and asked what to do, and they asked us to return it to the local store. If they had wanted us to keep it, they would have said so.

Amazon has always been SOOOO good about accepting returns and fixing mistakes that I can't see any reason why I wouldn't try to help them out when I can. It's the right thing to do.
Many people have the mentality that big companies like Amazon can eat the loss without any ill effects. They can eat some losses, that's true. But they have to make up the money somehow. then many of those same people bitch and moan about Big Box stores taking over smaller shops, having unethical business practices, etc. When many of those practices are there to compensate for the losses like this one. Can't really have it both ways.

This was just posted locally for me... s.mlive.com/gGZYf8jIf they send me something I didn't order I typically will keep it or pass it on if I can't use it. I have tried to be good and return and the sales associates give me a worse time of it, like I stole something.

Yes, would return it. It takes less than five minutes to print the return label and contact for pickup. My UPS dropoff is next to a Store I frequent so that might be another five,if I didn't have them pickup.
I wouldn't feel obligated or rushed, but there's no harm in understanding mistakes can happen and helping. I hope for the same cooperation when others deal with me.

I'm another one who thinks it isn't a great big deal. Amazon is so good about everything and I never have issues with them. Things happen. This one is pretty easy in the scheme of things. I'd find any box I had (and you must have many these days - boxes are coming out the wazoo for me) and slap the return receipt on. It's a small pain in the scheme of things.
