Do you have pine trees around? Every year I pick up pine cones from my neighbors yard for decorations. Candy canes are cheap too!

Get a bag of wrapped candy (like the lindt truffles), tie curling ribbon around one end (knot twice like the first step in tying a shoelace), then tie the ends together to make a loop. Hang on tree, eat after christmas.

Do you have 99 Cents Only stores? I've been in there a few times over the past month or so and have been surprised at the cuteness of the Christmas ornaments (nice colors and good size). There were plenty left as of two days ago.
As an aside, they also have really nice gift bags and boxes.
If that doesn't work out, check at Hobby Lobby/Michael's where the Christmas stuff is likely 50% off by now. A bit container of coordinating ornaments is probably not very expensive. Teach your kids to make paper snowflakes and you're all set.

Paper chains! Colored Construction paper is really cheap. All you need is a glue stick and scissors. We reused ours for years until they got all crunched up.
Lots of good memories about making these with my sisters and mom.

Situation: Moved in a temporary situation and did not move decorations. Have purchased an inexpensive faux tree. Was hoping to grab cheap decorations for the tree from DollarTree, but shelves are empty other than wrap and bows. I'm going to hit one more DollarTree location, but now is as good of a time to panic as any. Not having a tree is not an option because you know how fast kids grow up and all that. Ideas? I'm thinking popcorn garland...and maybe little gingerbread men cookies. While I'd love to not spend the time DIY, I want to spend as little as possible since it will likely be left behind soon. One year we decorated a tree with gum wrappers and egg shells. If you eat a fair amount of eggs, use something like an ice pick to break a smallish hole in each end (about the diameter of a pencil) run the ice pick into the egg and swirl it around to break the yolk sack. Then blow into one end. The egg will come out the opposite end. Rinse the egg interior with water and let dry. Use glue to draw on designs and spinkle with glitter. We ate the scrambled eggs for dinner/breakfast. For the gum wrappers you could make construction paper loop chains too. faster than stringing popcorn. eta: How to make a chain from gum wrappers or other small candy wrappers. www.gumwrapper.com/build.htm

Odds are there's a box full of christmas paper just waiting to be used up. LOL.

Something else we did when the kids were little, make cinnamon dough. Get a big tin of cinnamon and some apple sauce. I forgot how much apple sauce but mix in small amounts until you get a brown dough that is the right consistency for a sugar cookie. Roll out to about 1/4. Cut with cookie cutters. Poke a hole with a tooth pick where you want to put any hangers or ribbon. Once or twice a day turn them over until they are dry all the way through. Use small ribbon or ornament hooks to hang them.
YOu can buy cheap tins of cinnamon at a lot of dollar stores.

String popcorn. Hang candy canes. When I was growing up, we would decorate cut out cookies, wrap them in cellophane with a ribbon tied around the top and hang those on the tree as well. Everyone who visited over the holidays got to choose a treat off of the tree, either a cookie or a candy cane.

Take an egg carton and cut each individual egg holder. Use paint and glitter. Put a little hole in the top and get red and green yarn to use to hang on the tree.

I think fresh greenery is the best decoration.
Just go on a walk with clippers and find trees (that no one will notice) and clip some pine tree or fir tree branches. Bonus for including some red berries or pinecones!

Your children's small toys could be used on the tree as well with just a ribbon tied on. That gets them involved, too.
Glitter makes just about anything festive -- any kind of pine cone, seed pod, nut, or likewise from the yard.
Try the local thrift store or Goodwill, too. You may find really inexpensive ornaments there.

Try Michaels, they are having a 70% off all Christmas stuff sale. I bought a bunch of ornaments, wrapping paper, and card making supplies for a real bargain yesterday.

I sometimes do a native Florida tree. I slice round slices of oranges and dry them in the oven, then use raffia to make loops to hang on the tree. I have about six million shells around, so I took some of those and with a hot glue gun, attached ribbon or raffia to make loops to hang on the tree. A few other little things like a birds nest, some sea glass (also hot glue and raffia) and some other random things like drift wood fill it out. I like the look of it, it is all natural, all Florida and equally important, all free.

Christmas ribbon is 70% off at Michael's and Joann's, plus they both have extra percent off purchase coupons right now, making the big fancy Christmas ribbon less than $2/roll. I'd go buy $10 worth of that, use some to wrap around the tree like garland, some to make a big bow on top, and some to make small bows on branches.

I made these last year to go on my tree since money was tight. Just used Christmas scrap paper I had in my stash and added a ribbon on top so I could hang on the tree.

Our tree is all hand made this year minus the candy canes. Popcorn strung with cranberries... cinnamon applesauce ornaments... branches cut into rounds painted with snowman faces, and candy canes.

Walmart had a $10 thing that had a bunch of bulbs in it. Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Big Lots all have cheap ornaments. Good luck, I am sure whatever you pull together will be great!

Yarn pom poms Those pleated paper circle things -- pleat the paper, staple in the middle, open like a fan Tissue flowers -- they'd be round things like ornaments paper chains -- gold paper?? make it sparkly
small styro ball - toothpicks stuck into it all around -- spray paint and glitter --- not for littles, those damn toothpicks get pointy!!
Circles of paper - or symetrical shapes - fold in half, stick the folded 1/2s together until a rounded shape is created - or a 3D snowman, etc.
shaped pasta can create pretty ornaments --

In a pinch, Barbies, stuffed animals, cookie cutters, popcorn or paper chain garland, red ribbon cut just long enough to make loops to stick in here and there for color, pine cones, candy canes, big paper stars or snowflakes.

Pinecones painted with cheap craft paint and tossed with a bit of glitter can be gorgeous. I used to make these in my Pre-K class - just hot glue some ribbon to the top of the pine cone so the kids can hold it while they paint and glitter. Crystal glitter on pastel paint is surprisingly lovely on these. Twist brown pipe cleaners onto candy canes for antlers and glue on a couple of googly eyes and a little pom pom nose and you have a cute reindeer that the children can eat later. Hit the dollar store for some popsicle sticks and let the kids glue 3 of them them into snowflakes - paint and glitter. Heck, just give the kids a package of metallic/sparkle pipe cleaners and let them make stars and hearts or whatever they can think of to pop on the tree.

Bake the pinecones before putting them on your tree ( unless you get them from a craft store). You don't want little critters in your home😃

Oranges, lemons, and limes! (I don't have pretty Floridian sea glass or driftwood to round out the beauty that sounds like your tree is, but I can do citrus!)
