I have had sinusitis and bronchitis for almost two weeks. Started feeling bad on Tuesday 12/6. Went to a CVS minute clinic on 12/10. I have taken my full dose of antibiotics. I have taken Musinex daily, the pearl pills that I though were supposed to help with cough. I feel better but the cough.
I have used Vicks and boiling water to put moisture in the air. Please help with ideas to stop cough. I am exhausted and my chest hurts.
Thanks

Do you have any Vick's cough drops? Those can really help.

Have you ever tried a saline sinus rinse? Hot water, salt packet, and squeeze bottle up both sides of the nose. Drain for a while. Try it twice a day. It may do the trick. For some immediate relief, there is always hot water with lemon and honey -- it kind of soothes the tickle and cuts the mucus.

Delsym is what the doctors in my department recommend.

I'm a dayquil/nyquil user. I don't know of anyone that has been helped with a cough using musinex. I thought it was developed more as an expectorant to get you to cough up the excess mucus. Could be wrong.

Try grapefruit juice. Discovered this last winter and really helped me. Just sip a half glass. Hope this helps or you find relief another way.

At night rub Vick's Vapor Rub along the bottom of your feet & then wear socks. I don't know how it works to suppress coughing, but definitely helps my kids & me.

Wasn't there a post recently where many of the peas recommended a cough medicine they like? I don't recall what it was as I've never used it, but it seems to me everyone was recommending the same product.
Anyway, have you gone back for a recheck after the bronchitis to be sure it has cleared up?

DON'T DRINK GRAPEFRUIT JUICE IF YOU'RE TAKING MEDS FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.
Lots of BP meds are affected by grapefruit juice. Please check with your doc before you taken anything in combo with BP meds.

Sounds like the bad cold that has been going around. Bad cold, then a cough that lasts for weeks on end.

I usually can't do some of the cough syrup stuff or Nyquil with my heart but I can do mucinex. I've had it for a few weeks now and now my voice is gone. The cough has gotten better with the mucinex but I can't talk. I just squeek. So I'm not sure which is better lol! Mucinex usually does the trick there are different formulas. Also the halls cough drops. i go between the honey ones and the cherry ones. The honey ones sell out fast here for some reason! Hope you're feeling better soon!

Anyway, have you gone back for a recheck after the bronchitis to be sure it has cleared up? That was the Delsym. Never worked for me, though. Soooooooo many people recommended it so I ponyed up for cough syrup. Never took more than the first useless dose. ohiodianna, I am sorry you can't find any relief. I can't really find much of anything that helps me during the day, although I much prefer taking something like robitussin liquigels to cough syrup. I usually find Vicks helps stop the cough long enough for me to get to sleep-- are you wearing something so that the vapors come up to your face? I use it at bedtime because after I rub it on my chest, I tent the sheets over my nose and try for some deep breaths. I can usually feel them working. If I am desperate during the day, like if I have to go to work, I will rub it on, get dressed, and then wrap my winter scarf to try to pull the vapors up. I will also drink hot caramel macchiatos from starbucks when I have the chest cold going on. (I always drink an iced drink otherwise.) The heat, plus the warm milk and melted caramel are really soothing to my throat and chest.

If you can stand the slimy sensation, I wouldn't do it just at night. I know it sounds crazy but I've seen it stop horrible coughs dead in their tracks. My oldest went from coughing with great regularity, as in barely 2 minutes between coughing fits, to none at all overnight the first time we tried this. It doesn't work as well every time or with every person I've used it on, but there's always been noticeable improvement. YMMV

If the cough continues and wakes you up at night, I would ask for a prescription cough medicine . My mom had to use this at times.

Your high blood meds may be causing your cough.

I have bronchitis that started Dec. 2. Saw Dr. on the 5th and she wanted to "wait and see" and told me to just do OTC. So I was doing Mucinex DM. It only barely took the edge off the cough. I have gone through 2 large bags of cough drops (my teeth feel so gross!) I started using a cool mist vaporizer at night and doing like someone else said and slathering Vicks on my feet before bed. I can't believe those 2 things really calmed the cough at night!
I have also been using 2 tsp honey with a shake of cinnamon and eating it off a spoon. That soothes the cough, but only temporarily.
Dr. finally prescribed steroids for the cough. It helped the first few days, but I'm still coughing a lot.
Can't wait for this to be over.
Now DD started with the cold/cough 2 days ago and today DS has a sore throat. Ugh!
Hope you get some relief and feel better soon!!!!

I did this last week when I was trying to sleep & kept coughing. It worked for me. So weird. My feet were colder than normal the following morning, but I was okay with that, the coughing stopped. Feel better soon.

I just saw a facebook post about putting vick's vapo rub on the bottom of your feet and the put on socks and it would help ease a cough. I've never tried so i have no idea if it works - but if you have some it can't hurt to try! Hope you feel better!

I am not on BP meds but apparently am sensitive to some over the counter meds that tend to make it high. Cannot take the Mucinex DM or the decongestants with PE have to stay with the normal not as strong over the counter meds. I stopped taking the Mucinex. Sounds like it may have been encouraging the cough. Good thing in some ways but I am DONE coughing. Tried the Vicks on my feet last night. Not sure it helped. But heck did not hurt. I still woke up a few times hacking. However seems to be at least slightly better this am. Almost 24 hours since Mucinex and I am taking the prescription Tessalon Perle pills that will maybe work better now that I am not fighting against them with the Mucinex.
Thanks again for all the input.

What meds are you taking for your hypertension? ACE inhibitors can all cause a cough.
if you aren't taking an ACE, your cough may be caused by your sinus drainage. For me, zyrtec and flonase work best for me. For years, I was getting a persistent cough at the same time every year. It would last for over a month or even longer. I figured out, after multiple rounds of antibiotics and other cough meds, that it was allergies and the nasal drainage causing my cough.
I was symptoms free after just two days of the zyrtec and flonase combo. You might prefer Claritin or Allegra but the allergy meds made a huge difference.

After years of fighting what I thought was chronic "bronchitis, "I figured out that I did not have bronchitis at all. Well, a doctor figured it out, not me. I have allergy induced asthma. My cough would get so bad, I would throw up. It was exhausting to cough all the time! He put me on an inhaler, daily Flonase, daily allergy pill, and – surprise – a proton pump inhibitor, because acid reflux can also contribute to chronic cough.
I'm sorry you have the never ending cough. It sucks. If it does not clear up In a week or two, please go back to your doctor and push until he investigate more…

When I develop the type of cough that you have, the only thing that helps me is a prescription inhaler. Hope you feel better soon!
