Have you reorganized your scrapping space before? Whether it's a cart, desk, or a whole room!
Where did you start? How did you decide how to organize your area? I'd love to know your process!

Ooohhh! I just went through this in our new house. our previous place, I just had part of a room with a desk and Raskog and a few shelves on a bookcase. When we moved, I got 2 Kallaxes, a low and wide Alex, and a tall Alex from Ikea. I asked about it on this board and I decided to sort my embellishments mostly by color because that's how I look for stuff, so I put those in the tall Alex. It was tough splitting up things, but I did keep a drawer for "multi" for chipboard and puffy sticker packs I couldn't bear to separate. The low Alex has in-process projects and some tools. The Kallaxes have bulkier things, like copy paper, photo paper, etc in the cubbies and my sewing machine, Silhouette, Big Shot, and printer sit on top. I try to keep my desk as clean as possible! I am so glad I did this. It makes it a billion times easier to 1. find what I need and actually use it, and 2. put things away when I want to change gears to another project. The key to making it all work was not only the organizing furniture, but also the small storage inside, like plastic baskets to keep it all corralled within the drawers. I don't have a huge stash, so the whole putting away process only took me a few hours one afternoon.
I am super proud of my space (except the hideous orange carpet) so if you'd like some photos, I'd be happy to share! Are you re-organizing your own space?

ellewood yeah! i'd love pics. We moved into our house from a condo a little over a year ago, but with renovations, I have only been able to start thinking about the new craft space recently. I technically have a whole room, but it does have an elliptical in it and will likely be a second guest bedroom if needed. Regardless, I get at least half the room to finagle with. But all my scrap stuff is in boxes in a few different closets, and I don't really know where to start. Do i get out all my supplies and sort? Do I get some storage stuff first? I have a desk i don't love, but it's there and free, but other than that I will need to buy some storage items.

I set up my room a few years ago by taking over the family computer/study loft space. A lot of my stuff was in organizer bags and boxes that I had to drag out every time I wanted to work. The first thing I did was get a Costco project table and matching shelf unit. I also repurposed some little chests and side tables. Once those were in place, I unpacked things into the furniture, and bought some baskets and other organizers as needed.
Have fun getting your new area set up!

This year is the first time I have a real space to myself.
It's my bedroom, so I have pretty much one half bedroom, one half scrapbooking.
It was important to me to have my own desk and folding chair, and a cube shelving system to be able to store my albums on. I have the BH&G 8 cube unit, bought and shipped from Walmart.
I am very careful to not outgrow my space with stash. I only buy what I have room for.
I have one magazine holder that can hold about 400 sheets of 8.5x11" cardstock at a time. I don't let myself buy more than what it can hold.
I have a Cropper Hopper 12x12" paper holder for loose sheets. I only buy what loose sheets can fit in that. I have another small magazine holder that holds my 6x6" pads of paper. Again, I only allow myself to buy what it can hold.
All of this paper is on one cube shelf of my BH&G unit. The space remaining is dedicated to 12x12" paper pads. It can hold four or five 48 sheet pads.
I actually do have too many albums to have in there (it's a tiny bedroom), so I have about 40 completed albums stored in a deep upstairs closet in Rubbermaid bins).
All the albums that are in progress are in my room, though.
As with the paper, I have different bins that hold dies, stamps, & embellishments. I don't let those bins pass capacity. It's the only way to ensure that my stash doesn't outgrow my room.

I've re-organized my room so many times I don't know if I'm an expert or so bad at it I keep redoing it. Hah!
The first thing I did was to organize what I used most, which was stamps at the time. I do it like Jennifer McGuire. Then my papers got organized. First cardstock by color, then patterned paper by color. I also have a section for kit club papers, each sectioned off by month with all of it's contents kept together. I organize my ephemera by type, for ex: flair, labels and words (acrylic and wood veneer) in small sterilite drawers. I have a stamping area with stamps and ink. I have a mixed media area with all of my paints, brushes and gesso organized. I have an 8 unit Kallax for my Scrapbooks and the 12x12 paper storage. I keep it horizontal so I can use the top as a counter. I also have a peg board on the wall where I display my "at the moment" favorite things.
I still feel like I need to organize it better. But it's working well for me right now.

When I reorganize I first figure out on paper and in my head where I want the furniture and stuff. I also think about what supplies I use the most and what I want to have handy and where to put them. I also spend a lot of time on-line looking at other craft rooms. When I have a plan, I move everything out, move the furniture around, and then move everything back in. I purge and sort while I am moving things back in. I kind of like rearranging my room. It is a sickness I think!

I reorganized in 2015. It actually took me several weeks and the room was a complete disaster before it came together. I started by going through all the paper and sorting it into piles of keep, maybe and discard, including scraps. Then Cricut cartridges, stamps, embellishments, stickers, tools, etc. I tested all inks and pens and tossed any that were dried up. All items were stored in boxes labeled "keep", "maybe" and "donate" until everything was looked at and actually touched and all shelves were emptied.
Then after looking at what I was keeping and looking at pictures craft rooms on-line I decided on my storage solutions. I already had Ikea shelving units and I wasn't replacing those or my desk. For stamps, dies, inks, washi I went with the InterDesign FridgeBinz that Jennifer McGuire had/has in her room along with a few other of her ideas. For paper storage - 12x12's is still in my old Cropper Hopper paper holders, 8.5x11 paper is in IKEA magazine storage bins. Solid scraps are stored in Totally Tiffany 12x12 paper pockets by color family. Patterned paper scraps are stored in Iris 12x12 containers. Kits are kept together and stored in 12x12 Iris Containers. Sequins, brads, eyelets are stored in Craft Mates containers. I also re-purposed an armoire for a Cricut and Silhoutte station along with storage for extra craft supplies like my knitting/crochet/cross-stitch stuff, glue guns, and stuff I've collected over the years, which are all in stacking bins. I'm still searching for a ribbon and button storage solution.
I think you just need to dig in and start with the item you have the most of (for me it was paper) and actually touch everything and ask yourself if the item is your style and will you ever use it. And Google is your friend when it comes to looking at craft rooms and storage solutions.
Good luck.

The biggest thing for me was working out how I look for things. I used to have everything sorted roughly by type but struggled with using anything other than the latest and greatest from the front/top of the pile. I thought sorting by colour might be a good fit for me but it only took two weeks before I realised that although I often thought of colour while I was creating it wasn't the place where I started. The trial and error led me to my current system which isn't perfect but mostly works.
It turns out that not sorting supplies actually worked best for patterned papers, paper scraps, washi, ribbon and twine, buttons, and flowers (like the prima and old HS ones).
All my smaller mostly paper embellishments (die cuts, stickers, vellum pieces, frames, doilies, etc) are sorted into two drawers - things with words and things without. I cut all my sticker sheets up into individual pieces (although a block of word phrases like on the SS alpha sheets I will leave as a block). I keep all my journaling tags/cards/stickers in one drawer even if I know I will likely use them only for layering. I have two themed drawers - one for Christmas and one for travel. Everything else themed is added to my other storage drawers.
I only have a small space - a desk and set of narrow drawers next to it - so keep most of my supplies right in front of me in two sets of drawers on my desk. Larger supplies or things I'll likely only reach for once during a project (alphas, paper and cardstock, paper scraps, mists, stencils) are stored where it's easier to stand up or I have to stretch to reach. The easiest to access drawers hold my most commonly used supplies.

It's a counter-height work table with shelves below. They have the 8-section shelves (room divider) at Costco again right now, but I haven't seen the project table for a couple of years. Here's a picture of mine. I wish it was this clean right now!

I started organising yesterday - needed my husband's hands I'm almost done, and I'll take some photos later. I have a fraction of the stash most people have because I'm mainly digital. I have a dedicated space for my Silhouette Cameo, a second computer and a very low table - think just above knee height for you people that can stand up!

But embellishments, I definitely don't think that way. And I think I'd have the exact same themed drawers, haha!

I wanted one of those Costco project tables sooooo bad but they were long gone by the time I was able to get a dedicated craft room again. Luckily, I happened upon one of the Pottery Barn craft tables on craigslist for I think $200. I also got one of the Kallax shelf units to replace a different cubbie unit that was not as sturdy and the cubbies were smaller. I am really more of a paper crafter than a scrapbooker these days. I make cards, decorations, etc but haven't scrapbooked for a long time. I also make jewelry so I am still trying to get an organizing system that works for all of that stuff, which is mostly very tiny. My long term plan is to put a wall mounted TV and a comfortable chair in there too but I tend to work in spurts, which makes DH crazy as he likes to just do everything at once.

The trickiest thing for me was organizing the tiny bits, so the small containers and tall Alex were perfect for that!

I don't enjoy organizing, so it is important to me to set up a system I Can live with for a long time.
I did a scrap room Reno a couple of years ago. (I have a home office as my space). I organized the room by how I work. I scrap standing up, so I have two kitchen height counters across the room from each other, and my supplies and tools are all stored in drawers, on shelves, and in cupboards all just a step or two away. I lay out and assemble projects on one counter and use the other for cutting, inking, stamping, whatever.
All else, I organized by how I look for things:
All dies and embossing folders on a cart. All stamps and inks and stamp blocks in one corner near a piece of counter with a foam pad for stamping. All my messy stuff downstairs so I can slap some cardboard on my chest freezer and spritz and splatter away.
Pp I sort by season &/or theme, usually with collections together. CS is sorted by colour.
Some embellishments are sorted by type (metals, veneer, ribbon, washi, flowers), but the pieces that come with a collection or kit stay with that set.
Theme is a big thing with me, as I usually scrap one season at a time. One big corner in the pantry unit holds all my Christmas playthings, and when I finish scrapping the season, they will all be stored away until I start card making in October.

My craft space is in a finished attic space. My main objective has been to use as much of my wall space as I can, because I don't have a lot of it. Most of my walls only stretch to about 4 feet high. My table is in the middle of the room (a kitchen table I picked up at a yardsale) and all the walls (except for the guest bed area in one corner) are in use.
My storage pieces are really flexible in how I use them, so I can move things easily whenever I change my mind about where I want something. I'm still unpacking after moving in 2 years ago! On my biggest wall, I have three 2x4 Expedit units sitting horizontally, end to end, with twelve 3 drawer Sterilite units across the top. Inside the cubes I have shoeboxes and dollar store laundry baskets. Not flashy, but practical.
Anyway, my advice would be to plan out broader areas and not get caught up in the details just yet. Go high on your walls and be flexible about your early decisions. And have fun ... Put on some music while you work!

Figuring out what type of organization works well for you is the first step for your space -- I've learned that I'm a visual person and having things available to see helps me not to forget what I have. That being said, I tried a lot of different things, some that work, some that definitely didn't. For me, the Expedit/Kallax units are perfect. Things are organized and yet still open so I can see them. Good luck!

I am just now moving into my space. I just bought a Raskog-like cart from Target. I've got a Pampered Chef Tool About that I earned as a hostess gift years ago for my tools. My room is very small, so I need to use the closet for storage. I've got some Ikea Billy bookshelves in there that I will put bins and boxes of supplies in. I am still thinking about what I am going to do with my paper. I like keeping it by color, and then theme. I am not tied to manufacturer. I will probably CASE Jennifer Maguire's stamp, die and embossing folder storage with the acrylic fridge organizers.

I've been working on mine in fits and starts for going on two years. I really need to get back at it. I had a long time to think about it before I was able to get custom cabinets and shelving installed (two years ago next February). While I was waiting, I set up a Pinterest board where I collected tons of ideas for storage and organization I liked. After I got my cabinets and stuff in, I got most of my scrap stuff unpacked, and most of the scrapping stuff sorted to either keep or purge. As I did that, I did a very basic sort into categories or themes for the things I was keeping and boxed up everything I wanted to get rid of so I could price it later. I've sold probably 6-7 boxes of stuff, donated probably another 4-5 more and still have more to go.
Now I'm at the point where I need to go through the categories of stuff that got crammed into drawers and cabinets to get it out of the way and decide if that's really the best way to store those things (because it's probably not). The themed stuff that's in bins will stay in those bins because that's how I tend to scrap, but the stuff that's in drawers and on the shelves needs to be re-evaluated because it's all a hot mess.

Don't buy storage before you know what you need. Gather all like things together and see how much of those you have. You can find the cutest box or container ever but if its way to big or way to small its just cute and not functional.

When I moved in May 2014 I also took quite a few months to organize my space. But now it is in need of a change, mostly I want to just pare down supplies bcz I tend to use the same things over and over. Also I really want to have my machines more setup and ready to go...so I am in need of more counter/table space. Also think about if you like things out or put away. Like I prefer drawers and cabinets over cubbies just bcz I want to be able to close it all up (even if its a mess inside!) I think the biggest thing is just to take time and do it little by little so you get it where you really want it. ellewood when you get a chance, would you mind telling what the interior dimensions of the tall Alex drawers are? I have the low one and love it. The tall ones would help by taking up less space, but I am wondering the dimensions. I don't think it will fit anything 12x12? I've searched online, but couldn't fine. Thanks!
