We have one that is a rescue. He came from DFW Rescue Me in Dallas and he was a bottle baby. DH and I saw his picture on their FB page and instantly fell in love! We applied on line and get the call a few days later. We went to go see the litter of bottle babies (there were 5 of them) and we were done for! We picked him up three weeks when he was old enough. The first thing that he did when we brought him home was run under the Christmas tree and pee, then he ran under the chair and then he ran under my son's bed. He was sooooo easy to crate train as he clearly loved that feeling of being in a den.
We also have an animal shelter dog and her name is Betsy. She is around 5 years old and she was days from being done for. We brought Joey up the shelter so they could meet and they started playing right away. We brought her home and Joey and Betsy have been best friends ever since!

My cats were both rescues. I recently lost my Georgie. I got him from a kill shelter when he was a kitten. He was the best CAT EVER!!! And I miss him terribly. My other cat, Monster, I also rescued but from a group called Heaven Can Wait. He's 12. My Georgie was 15.

We tried a rescue before we got our newest dog. He was just the sweetest dog when we were in the room and turned into Kujo when we left. I feared for my older dog's safety. We got a puppy who was a butt ton of work, but he was worth it all now.

This weekend we brought home a 9-year-old dog that I hope will be a good companion for our Scottish terrier. We lost a dog over a year ago, and she has been very lonely since. I found this dog online. She's been in the foster system for a while.

All of our dogs have been rescues. One was even a senior dog. I think we will always get rescues. They have so much love to give.

all of mine except 1 has been a rescue of some kind.
most recent one I saw on CL. she looked like my others and I didn't want some weirdo to get her and hurt her. so I got her. she's a weirdo - but she fit in.
I couldn't believe people put their pets out on CL.

My dog was seized by animal control for abuse/severe neglect. A rescue organization got him medical attention, surgery, and nursed him back to health before he was put up for adoption at the shelter. I had actually seen his story on Facebook a month or so before we got him, and did not even realize he was the same dog until they shelter told us. He was briefly adopted out for a weekend by a very young couple, but they were not a good fit to his extreme special needs. He was back in the shelter, others were considering him I think because he was "famous" locally. We did not know he was famous, just saw his photo and called the shelter, they put a hold on him, we immediately all went to meet him. Love at first hug for youngest, though I spent the whole time surveying his temperament, behavior with kids etc. He took a lot of work and consistency, and someone being with him nearly 24/7 for a year (he literally rode carpool with me and the kids 2x a day for an entire school year) because of his severe separation issues. But he's doing amazing now, and can be left home for a few hours no problem. He is the sweetest, cutest, funniest dog, and brings such joy to the house. He rescued us for sure!

My dog is a rescue pup that came to Colorado from an over crowded shelter in Mississippi. My ferret was a rescue that had been in several foster homes. We were her forever home. We also had a cat, 2 guinea pigs and a bird that were all rescues. I think we have only purchased in a store the rats and the hamsters.

I have always had Scottish Terriers and have my name at several shelters if they ever get one. I was notified of one at my local shelter. The next morning I went down to meet him and see if we were a good match. When I got there, I was told he had just been adopted. Fast forward a year and I start dating a man - who has a scottie - who was a rescue - the same rescue I went to look at! Our scottie dogs get along fabulously!

Both my cats are feral rescues that I got at about 3 months. I've had cats all my life, and these two clearly have the most unique personalities of any of them. I attribute it to their start, but who really knows. They both could be slightly nuts just because...well....they're cats ETA: My girls, Pandora on the left and Dot on the right.

About 5 years ago I adopted my dog, Riley from the Humane Society of North Texas. I live in Fort Worth. He was 4 years old and found on the street. At that point, the shelter was full so they were giving the animals away, so he was absolutely FREE!
He is the best dog ever! We did have some issues when we first adopted him. He chewed on a pair of shoes, peed in the house, etc. None of it was a deal breaker for me. We worked with him and all of the issues were quickly resolved.
He's a shih tzu mix, we think. Sometimes I wish he could talk so I could ask him how he ended up on the street.
He happily follows me around the house and there have been times when I've gone out in the front of my house to do something and come back in and not realized he's out there. One time I accidently left him out in the front for an hour and a half! I got busy working on things in the house and it took me a while to realize that he was missing. I opened the front door to look for him and he was just sitting there waiting for me!

We adopted our first rescue a few months ago after losing our 14 yo Jack Russell. I'm pretty sure he's part lab and part kangaroo. He bounces wherever he needs to go more than he walks. He has been so much fun! Probably a good thing because we had forgotten the dreaded puppy stage and how not fun it can be.
I just love to hear people's pet stories, especially adoption stories!

No, we tried but had to return him to the rescue. Broke our hearts!!!! He was so bad the behaviorist we had involved with us said he needed to go to a full-time facility for a long time to change his issues if it were possible. Because he was a danger to the family, we had to send him back. We have gotten older dogs from breeders before but our favorite is getting an 8 week old puppy so that they get the training and socialization they need. If the rough collie rescue has a dog that presents itself again, I am not against it at all but do have apprehension because of what we went through before.

our current crew have all been strays that adopted us (or in the case of Tabby and Mini - their mum was a stray that adopted us and then moved her kittens in). Living here I doubt we'll ever have to look for a pet at a shelter or rescue - people just dump them out here in teh woods

We have a cat who is from the shelter...she is the sweetest, most talkative little thing there ever was. She was the last of her siblings left and just took right to me when they handed her to me.
My parents just adopted a cat from another shelter last month. He's 3 and was supposedly given up because his elderly owner couldn't afford him. He has a lot of energy, is sweet with a good dose of brat thrown in!

All my animals have been rescues or shelter animals, and all but one was an adult. I rather like adopting adults because you know basically how they'll turn out - you can't necessarily guess it all from how they behave as puppies or kittens. That having been said, the one kitten was sure fun when he was little! (He's now 2.5 and he's so huge we nicknamed him Moose.)

All of my animals are rescues. I will never have an animal that is a bought one because there are too many homeless to help.

Not anymore, but two dogs, a cat and two bunnies have been "second hand pets". Giving an animal a chance of a happy life, is very rewarding.

My current dog is not a rescue, but got him through Craig's List. All my other animals since I got married (34 years) were rescues, 2 dogs and 3 cats.

Yes, two actually. Our blue heeler mix was a "fear biter" (she'd been ignored in a back yard with no human contact, so she was terrified of people) - the shelter did a great job of rehabilitating her, she still occasionally jerks her head back as if to bite if she's startled, but will not actually bite. She needed a home without children, so we chose her.
Our Husky (pictured left), was a stray who wandered up one Sunday afternoon. We kept her overnight and then took her to the shelter the following morning. At the time, they had a large number of big dogs and were on the verge of having to start euthanizing, so I told them if she wasn't claimed to call me and we'd foster her. Needless to say, we "failed" as foster parents and have been proud husky owners for the past 3 years.

Yes, we have a long haired Chiweenie we rescued when we lived in NorCal. She's the best dog ever. Someone abandoned her in an office park. I can't for the life of me understand why. She is awesome!

My girl poodle came from a rescue in Bend, Oregon many years ago. She would spend her days in a car while her owner worked in a gas station. She was flown up to us and she made herself right at home. We loved our Josefina so much and she was such a good girl (except for the barking...) I miss her terribly. I would love to have Josie kisses again and know she is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge to pick her up and take her to Heaven with me one day.

Both of our dogs are rescues.
We adopted our little one, a Jack Russell mix, from an agency. Our big dog, a German shepherd mix, just showed up and decided to stay.
