My husband woke up feeling very dizzy on Sunday and it didn't get better by evening. I took him to Urgent Care in the evening and the doctor diagnosed him with positional vertigo. She gave him a prescription but it didn't help. She never checked his ears since he had no cold symptoms and his lungs sounded fine. He has been laying around all day yesterday and today and isn't feeling better. His mom recommended PT so he went today.
Has anyone has any experience with this or have any suggestions?

Vertigo has many possible causes. I would see an ENT first, they can diagnose if there's an infection the Urgent Care didn't detect, and be able to do the maneuver if they feel it's due to "rocks in his head" as we like to tease. My family has a lame sense of humor. Is he hearing any odd sounds, like a waterfall or compressor?

I'm so sorry he's feeling bad; vertigo sucks!
I've been dealing with it off and on since May. I woke up one day, was fine. Later I stood up again and the world felt like it was spinning. I sat down, gave it some time, stood up again, and same thing. Then the vomiting started. I got so bad so fast, and I was certain death was near, I ended going to the ER (only the second time in my life so it was that bad). After numerous blood tests, EKG and CT scan, they determined it was vertigo, gave me medicine and sent me home. The ER doctor offered to admit me because I was so dizzy and sick, but they said they really wouldn't do any more for me there than I'd be doing at home.
I had follow ups with my GP, who then sent me to an ENT because it continued. The ENT stopped short of diagnosing Meniere's Disease, but didn't rule it out.
The meds the ER gave me (I can't remember what it was) did seem to help with the dizziness, but they put me to sleep. The ENT said there really wasn't anything that could be done, and I left with in not so many words a "you have to deal with it."
So, all of that to say, nothing could really be done to help me. I get it sporadically, out of the blue. It sucks. I found that when I get dizzy if I just lay down for a bit, it sometimes goes away. Unfotunately, not all of the time.
I hope someone else can chime in with suggestions, and I hope your DH feels better soon!

I was told in the ER because they can't really see into the inner ear, they can't see if there's an infection so they had to rule other possible problems out, which explained all of the tests they ran. I had follow ups with my GP, who then sent me to an ENT because it continued. I saw him 3 times, and he stopped short of diagnosing Meniere's Disease, but didn't rule it out. I had this once last year. It was so bad that I was vomiting and my eyes were twitching wildly! I went to my regular dr who sent me immediately to PT. He did some head and neck adjustments and I was immediately better! I continue seeing him for two weeks until all symptoms were gone. He said it was something about crystals in my ears? I didn't care what it was but he fixed me! Vertigo is truly horrible!!

I never did ask the ENT about it, but I still do wonder. Maybe I'll revisit that. I was also told by my GP and the ENT excess fluid is a problem so I should try to limit sodium, and take allergy meds regularly.

I guess she thought she didn't need to since he didn't have a cold. She taught him some exercises, but the didn't work. He is never the typical patient, things always are worse or last longer for him. He loves the PT, he went there often for his back. I guess he plans to be off work all week, so he will try to go to PT again in a couple days.

This has been showing up in my reality a lot lately. Boyfriend gets bouts and I've seen others talk about it lately too. He gets them bad to the point of vomiting at least 10 times. I heard that it's due to an imbalance of sands out of place in your ear. When I heard a lady who used to experience it say that I thought she had sand in her brain I've looked on YouTube for videos on how to position the head so these sands fall back into place. For boyfriend's case I feel he went through it to realize that sometimes you can't always be in control and there are times you have to balance it out and give in, ask for help, slow down at times and trust that the universe has your back.

Every time I get home from a cruise vacation I have to take Meclazine because of dizziness. It used to be prescription but I think it's OTC now.

I had that several weeks ago. I lie, it was Thanksgiving! I remember because a friend drove me to Thanksgiving service. Anyway It was so weird! It came out of nowhere. If I turned over in bed the room spun. If I went to laugh my whole head felt like it was going to explode. One of my friends said they had it and it was a weird sinus infection. No runny nose or anything for either of us.
The dr gave me a script for the vertigo.

About a decade ago I woke up with the room spinning and thought I was having a stroke. Went to the DR and he diagnosed vertigo. I could lay on my right side to sleep but if I turned to my left side, the room would spin. Forget looking up while shopping. It eventually went away on its own. But I have heard it's because of little grains of something that get out of balance and cause it. I didn't have a case as bad as a friend's DH who had to lay on the floor while giving a presentation at work in front of the board of directors.

I was diagnosed with vestibular neuritis last Feb. I had vertigo and tinnitus for 2 weeks. My ears felt full like I had a head cold, bout had no fluid in there. I had had a sinus issue a few weeks before and they figured it could have inflamed my vestibular nerve.
I saw an ENT and an oto-neurologist. They both deemed it possibly BVVP but I did not have the eye nystagmus to fully declare it so they went with the neuritis. I was given some meds (Circ) and was told to keep walking and trying to retrain my brain to balance. I could only walk to the left and kept falling down. After 2 weeks, it got better.
I'm looking into chiropractic because I think it's caused by my neck and back being out of alignment. I get some dizziness now and again based on my neck position and what position I've slept in. I really hope it will help.

That sounds miserable what you went through! I thought maybe he would have it for a day, then it would go away. His dad has it, but not this bad and his aunt has it. Our poor kids will be in so much trouble if they get all of our health problems!

I have central vertigo (I think that is it) and the positional vertigo. One is caused by a "tonsil" in my head that blocks blood flow. It is not a Chiari formation but only because it is small. I've had it for most of my life and didn't know what it was. I thought it was normal for the world to spin.
I don't know what the trigger for the BPV was but the dr. thinks it was caused by a reaction to either the long term antibiotic or an allergic reaction to the scopolamine. She is leaning to the scopolamine which is just fricking ironic but after I lost my vision for a week... right, just not the drug for me. (Side note- got a letter from the pharmacy that the medicine batch they gave me was actually recalled. So who knows).
So what works for me is doing the Epley maneuver or the "somersault" maneuver. They are very similar. YouTube is faster than going to an appointment but if you can go the PT/ENT it is worth it. There is no rhyme or reason for when I'm going to have an attack. Also, no clue how bad it is going to be from knock me down, vomiting to just dizzy when I turn my head.

The PT should have done the Epely, and they would have been able to tell him if it was truly positional. Do what the PT said, sleep in the recliner, and what they said for exercises. It truly takes a good 24 hours before they see results after an Epley maneuver, IF it is positional. It's not going to be BAM, fixed.

I've been suffering from vertigo for about three weeks now. On Monday I took DH's suggestion of visiting our chiropractor. He x-rayed my neck and found that the top two vertebrae were out of alignment. He did some adjustments and immediately I felt tons of drainage in my throat. Today was much better, I have to say.
I go back for a follow-up tomorrow. Then I'll probably have at least one more adjustment after that.

Ive had BPPV (benign paroximal positional vertigo) for almost 4 years. Its much milder now and only occurs in one or two positions. Im able to stop it pretty quickly when it starts. In the beginning it was like someone slamming my head against a brick wall. And my eyes would move like a maniacal typewriter. Now its a gentler dizzy without the eye stuff.
they tried the Epley maneuver several times but it didnt work.

I had a very bad time with what was called vertigo but I felt more like the world was on a see-saw more than spinning. Doctor could find nothing medically wrong. I did all the exercises for the ear crystal thing but no relief. After doing some research, I eliminated artificial sweetener (Equal in my coffee) from my diet and have not had it since. I avoid any artificial sweetener like the plague now. No more "diet" anything.

I have had many bouts during my lifetime. For me it is usually Mal de Debarquement, which is seasickness/travel sickness that occurs when you get OFF the boat, plane, train or car. Many people, especially after a long flight or cruise, will feel weird for a day or so, but for some people it can least weeks to months, and that has been the case for me sometimes. It can also be triggered by elevators and escalators.
I would suggest trying a sinus wash (the NeilMed one, not a Neti pot), as a sinus infection can trigger vertigo. If there is sinus inflammation and/or infection, this should help. Meclizine is available over the counter (it's the non-drowsy Dramamine, and is sold with other brand names and as a generic). Your dh should take the meclizine around the clock, not wait until he's symptomatic. If meclizine doesn't help, a prescription for Valium is the next step, and can work when the meclizine doesn't.
Also, he can do maneuvers himself to try and move the crystals in the ear back into place. Look up vertigo maneuvers on YouTube. You'll find there are several different types of maneuvers to try, so if one set doesn't help, try another set. The half forward roll is one.
Usually vertigo stops spontaneously, and most episodes are, thankfully, short-lived. But don't hesitate to have your DH see an ENT doctor if he doesn't get better quickly. Good luck!

My first bout occurred in September of 2010 with a trip to the ER because I couldn't stop vomiting it was so bad. I've dealt with it to some degree on a daily basis since then. For the really bad days I take meclazine. I've done the Epley but have had varying degrees of success. I saw an article not long ago about a new maneuver that's sort of like a half somersault. I haven't had the balls to try it yet in case it makes it worse.

The ENT stopped short of diagnosing Meniere's Disease, but didn't rule it out. @devildog I have almost-diagnosed Meniere's too. I can mostly control the symptoms by making sure I drink enough water every day. If I don't the tinnitus gets louder and the stopped up feeling in my ear gets worse.I've had 4 bad cases of vertigo because I let myself get dehydrated before I knew what was going on with the Meniere's. So, just a thought for you to make sure that you're drinking enough (more than you want probably) every day and it could help with any symptoms you have.

It is Benign Positional Vertigo. Need to have the Epley Maneuver done. I get it occasionally but I know how to do the maneuver so I can treat it at home. The key is you have to put on a neck brace for 24 hours afterwards. PITA but it keeps the crystals from moving around again which is common after the treatment. I have had it done without the brace and had to have it a second time. With the brace, only one treatment.
