As parents in a big way or did you leave it to the friends?
He is in college and is 9 hours away and we won't see him. But I am not sure if and we should recognize this event later. we have already had drinks with him when we were traveling where drinking age is 18. (Vacations)

Yes! And we all had a blast! We asked him what he wanted & he said he wanted to go see the PBR finals in Vegas. So, DH, me, Grandma & 17 year old sister went for 3 days. We had to alter the shows we saw to include little sister but we had a lot of fun. DD, Grandma & I shopped while the guys gambled.

My parents gave me 21 tens and took me to the casino, this was a week or two later after my birthday. After getting stuck in an elevator alone and missing my 21st birthday party with friends, the casino was a fun trip. LOL

Not really, but he was overseas on a deployment.. I am sure he has celebrated one to many times to even remember if we even sent a card (we didn't cause mailing things to him was such a pain where he was at).

We took our son to Vegas for his 21st birthday. His best friend met us there. We also had friends from California meet us there. Their daughter and our son were close friends before we moved to WA. Their birthdays were a week apart. So they celebrated together. It was a super fun trip. My daughter couldn't do a trip since school had just gone back into session, so we just went to the local Casino with friends and had dinner, drinks, and went dancing. It was a fun celebration too! We also gave her the same amount of money it would have cost to fly to Vegas. We are weird like that. We try to make everything even.

We are planning what to do for my twins who turn 21 in April.
There would be 9 of us, so thinking party bus. Dinner, drinks, and then us old folk will go home and their friends could meet them out.

My parents took me and my husband (yes, I was already married) to a casino for a weekend. My dad taught me how to gamble at the tables and my mom bought me lots of cocktails.

Dds (twins) were both away at college so not any differently than we normally do. Their 21st birthday was on Derby Day so they met up and went to the KY Derby together with some friends and we had a family dinner a different day.

Ds was big into playing poker (with his friends) so we took him to a casino near his college. Ironically, this casino doesn't serve liquor right in the gambling area. But they have a nice restaurant where he could order the weird drinks that 21-year-olds think are cool.
My niece turned 21 during ds and dil's law school graduation/engagement party weekend so we had another party for her. I made her a lei out of those little liquor bottles.

Our daughter is attending college in Southern California and has plans with friends. The week after DH and one of our sons are visiting for a couple of days and going to Disneyland, her favorite place! We were also able to get an invite to Club 33! She's beyond excited! Hey, us too!

I've had three turn 21 so far. Each celebration was different for various reasons.
The most recent one involved a weekend stay in downtown Chicago with lots of touring, dining, and drinks in the "famous" Chicago locations. That worked out because that son was graduating from A-school in the Navy at the same time so we were able to really make it party.
I have one more to go (but he's still only 15 so it'll be a while).

I think we went out to dinner and a drink with our oldest. Our younger one turns 21 next month.

My mom took me to Las Vegas the week after my 21st birthday and she ran me ragged. I was never so happy to go home from a vacation in my life! I would have much rather have gone to Disneyworld!

We are taking both of our boys to Vegas when my youngest turns 21 in May. They have both been to Vegas as kids seven times. We used to go for a conference my husband attended. They know the younger side of Vegas and my youngest has requested the trip. He "invited" us to go because he knew we would pay for it. They have both gambled since they were 14/16 and were able to get into the casinos in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. So the gambling and being able to drink won't be entirely new, but Vegas is a whole lot bigger than a third world country's casino. My son said he wants to spend the day before his birthday at Circus Circus and then go out that evening at midnight. We travel a lot as a family and I am glad he wanted to include us in his birthday.

Vegas for us too. It was a family trip to celebrate DS's 21st and DD's graduation. He celebrated with his friends after that.

My daughter and I went to lunch at Mexican place and had margaritas but she did the real celebrating with her friends. I paid for a hotel room for her in downtown Portland, and gave her $100.00 to spend while out celebrating.

Not there yet. I didn't with my parents. They gave me my gift, we went out to dinner and I went out afterwards with friends.
I will happily buy my kids a drink when they're old enough but I'll leave the celebration up to them.

My parents didn't do anything for my 21st. It kind of rubs me the wrong way to celebrate drinking with your child, but maybe my opinion will change as my kids get older.

We had small family celebrations but I was much more generous with gift giving. If they had parties with friends I wasn't part of that.
I'm pretty sure we went out to a nice restaurant and then came back home for cake and gifts.

Yes. Dd's birthday is in the summer and I asked her what she wanted to do. Turns out there's a restaurant where she's been lots of times with friends. They have some chocolate milkshake-type thing that's alcoholic and dd drools every time she's there but could never order it. So she wanted to go there for dinner and order one of those drinks. lol. We took along her best friend (who was already 21...poor dd is the absolute youngest of her group of friends, late August) and had a lovely dinner. Dd was afraid she wouldn't be carded because she was with me and dh, but I called ahead and asked. They said they always card no matter who's with the young-looking ones. Dd was happy.

Yeah we embarrassed my son by taking him to Hooters for dinner. He went out with his buddies separately afterwards.

On my ds's actual 21st birthday, I meet he and his gf for breakfast with mimosas. A few days later he and I had 5 days in NYC, which included a few bar crawls, brunch on a rooftop bar and lots of sightseeing. We had such a great time!

We had a surprise party for my daughter. Her birthday is on December 21st and all her high school friends were home from college, We invited a lot of her friends parents as well. It was a wonderful party.
My son didn't want a party, so we had a small family celebration and then he went out w/ friends.
