I joined way back when it was in it's beta stage, and I've always just assumed it was pronounced "PIN-terist" with the emphasis on the PIN and the second two syllables flowing together quickly into one.
I came to that conclusion because if you say to someone, "What kind of things do you like to do? What are your interests?" you would pronounce "interest" like "IN-terest."
If someone said, "What kinds of things interest you?" you would pronounce "interest" in that context by separating the syllables a bit more, like "IN-ter-est."
Since the beginning, I've heard people pronounce Pinterest both ways, and I wondered what the consensus was here.
edited to add: I've also heard people pronounce it "Pin-IN-ter-est." That one just makes me walk away.
UPDATE: reading the responses, and sitting here like a loon saying "Pinterest" out loud over and over, I actually DO say the slight "er" sound, though it's quick and subtle. I think I'm hearing others say "pin-TER-EST" in a very pointed, separated way that seems a bit less natural or fluid. I'm going to edit my explanation above to indicate that I DO say "PIN-terest" rather than "PIN-trist."

Honestly, always comes out "PIN-trist" though it should probably be "pin-ter-est."

I don't really say it a whole lot, but in my mind, it's Pin-trist. Even though I think it's should be pronounced the 2nd way. It's just laziness I think.

I don't pronounce interest - in-trist. I pronounce it in-ter-est with a slight and quick accent on the ter. So it makes sense to pronounce Pinterest the same way.

I have never pronounced the word interest as "intrist." Not sure I've ever heard it pronounced that like that either.

Pin-ter-est. I have never in my life asked anyone what their 'intrists' are!

I do pronounce the word interest and intrist. So yeah, I say Pin-trist. But then again I remember getting in an argument with my 3rd grade teacher over the pronunciation of the word "Celery". In my family it was called "Cel-ry" 2 syllables. She said it was 3 syllables "Cel-e-rey". I had never heard anyone pronounce it like that!

I have never pronounced the word interest as "intrist." Not sure I've ever heard it pronounced that like that either. You will soon! I usually say intrist like "there isn't much intrist in that." "She's not intristed." In-ter-est just sounds odd to me.

Pin-tr est, Interest, is pronounced in-trest... not intrist...at least in the UK, or should I say, in my neck of the woods!

I have to say that here (Texas) there are a lot of words where you don't hear a difference between the I sound and the e sound. So I'm having a hard time making intrest and intrist even sound different in my head.

I would say PIN-trest. mind you, I pronounce interest as IN-trest, so YMMV.

This is all very In-tresting. I try not to pronounce Pinterest at all as I find I stumble over it no matter what I say. I tend to say Pin interest like Darcy Collins if I really have to say it aloud.

It's like mis-che-vus vs. mis-chee-vee-us! I loathe this pronunciation with a passion.

I say it the way you do, but my DH once heard Kim Komando (radio computer talk person) call it "Pee-interest" which he immediately came home and told me about - we cracked up thinking she made it sound like some kind of fetish site...

I pronounce it like February. I say it Pin-ter-est. I have had several teachers who were sticklers about saying things correctly. I guess if you look at how you say interest or interesting, you will pronounce Pinterest that way. You are pinning your interests.

I'm English. I say PIN-ter-est. It's just interest with a P at the front. And CEL-er-y DOES have 3 syllables. And MIS-chiev-ous also has 3 syllables. And FebRuary does have an "r" in the middle as well as at the end.

Why would in-ter-est be in-trest? In-trest sounds weird.

Like interest with a P; however, where I live, we don't really say in-ter-est, it's more like intrest.

I don't enunciate the second syllable very clearly, but it's definitely there. It's funny though, when I say "interesting", the second syllable does disappear...

I say pinerest and my co-workers think it's hilarious. I blame it on my laid back California ways.

I say pin-trist because I'm lazy like that. I'm sure I say "intrist" too. A friend of mine calls it pin-interest. Drives me batty.

PIN-trist - although looking at it, it doesn't seem right. Shrug.
