I know I can Google but this is easier. My DD was just asking me what the difference is between a homecoming dress and a prom dress and I thought homecoming would be less formal. Then I realized I have no idea what homecoming actually is. We are Canadian and it's not a thing here

Here homecoming dressed are typically shorter and prom dresses often go all the way to the ground.
Homecoming celebrates alumni and coming back home. Colleges often have alumni activities and high schools often honor past classes from decades before.
It really is a traditional fun time that doesn't mean the same as it used to (at least around here)

Another Canadian here. Homecoming for me is a university thing...alumni return for the weekend, dinners, dances, get togethers etc. I've never heard of homecoming at the high school level in the 4 provinces I've lived in.

There is almost always a football (american football) game to go along with homecoming weekend.
Also, homecoming's in the fall and prom is usually a spring dance. Having never worn formal wear in my life, I don't know if that's a huge difference to the teen set, but I feel like the color palettes are probably usually a bit different.

Here homecoming is a week long activity that focuses on school spirit. There are events like a parade, different dress up days at school, a pep rally, etc. then there is a big football game. Alumni often return to their hometown/high school to go to the game. Then there is a big dance. I'm in Texas, so girls get mums and boys get garters. To the dance girls wear formal dresses and boys wear suits (usually with a tie that matches the girl's dress).
Homecoming is in the fall. Prom is in the spring.
Homecoming is a lot of activities spread over a week. Prom is one activity.
Homecoming is slightly less formal (boys wear a tux to prom).
Homecoming is for all grades, most people go all 4 yrs of high school. Prom is for seniors, most people only go once.

My DD is in Grade 10 and is already searching for the perfect grad dress and I think her searches probably led her to homecoming/prom dresses hence the question about homecoming.

I told my DD it was to celebrate the beginning of the football season but promptly realized I was making stuff up! DD's HS usually scheduled Homecoming the weekend after Fall midterms and it was one of the last home games of the season (late Oct or early Nov). The football game was Friday night and dance on Saturday, with girls more likely to wear short party dresses and boys in shirt/tie/dress pants. All grades are allowed to participate. DS's HS doesn't have a football team, so no Homecoming. They do have a Winter Formal dance around the holiday break. Prom is a more formal dinner & dance (long dresses for girls and suits for guys, although plenty of guy are less formal and wear something similar to HC) in the late spring for 11th & 12th grade only. DD's HS always scheduled their Prom in late May after state testing and AP exams. It is close to the grad dinner/dance I experienced in Canada.

Homecoming is the game played on the home field after the first away game.
In highschool in the upper part of the USA it has nothing to do with alumni weekend. Down south where football is king it May be different. It is semiformal.

We have Junior & Senior Prom. There is a theme (Great Gatsby, Mardi Gras, Arabian Nights, etc), formal long dresses, tickets are $60. It doesn't include dinner - just dancing.
Homecoming is football game at home with floats, parades, crowning of king/queen. It's about spirit. The kids support football on Friday night & then have a dance on Saturday. Dresses are short.

In high school, both are formals at our schools, but homecoming tends to be shorter dresses while prom dresses have gone back to the long gowns.
I know of one area school where homecoming is not a formal and is just a dance on the football field after the homecoming game. Weird, but that's what this school does.

Down south where football is king it May be different. It is semiformal. Texas checking in. Homecoming is a HUGE ordeal here. It is a home game when alumni "return home" (thus homecoming) for the game. Here the dates do not follow the first home game after an away game because we have 7-8 high schools in our district and they have to stagger them as they all use the same stadium (2nd stadium being built) Homecoming Week - each day has a different theme and the kids at the HS all dress in the theme (superhero, safari, patriotic, etc.) Friday is generally the Homecoming game. Here the girls get mums and boys garters. If you don't know a mum - google Texas Mums. They are like nothing I'd ever seen before (grew up in Ohio). It is a big flower, decorated with ribbons, decor, lights, bells, you name it. At least at DD's school, Freshman & Sophomores, the mum ribbons are school colors. Juniors ribbons are silver, and seniors gold. The kids wear their mums/garters to school Friday and then to the game. Saturday is the Homecoming dance. Generally, most girls wear short, yet fancy dresses. Heels. Hair, makeup and nails done. Dinner with dates beforehand. Dance. Then afterparties. This is my daughter and her date with their mum/garter - just to give you an idea (and hers was on the smaller side LOL) And her dress for the Homecoming dance

Look at promgirl.com - my dd#1 is in grade 12 right now and we bought a gorgeous dress from there that no one else in her school has Be sure to take measurements but you still might need to have alterations so be prepared ... we have to have dd's taken in at the top ... no biggie ... Paying the US exchange rate kind of sucks but grad is expensive in itself
