We are doing ours now. We don't get much of a return, if any, so not in a big hurry.

We are getting them done on Tuesday. So sad, I can't claim the 17 year old kid. I'm so irritated by this! My youngest turned 17 last year. She's still in high school, we obviously provide 100% of her support. I don't understand why the cut off is 17, not 18.

Has anyone used that free online thingy on the H&R block website? I have always done our taxes by hand with a paper and pencil, but I also hate doing it every year. I don't want to pay someone to do something I can do myself, and I also don't want to pay for tax software, but the online h&R block thing says it's free. Just wondering if anyone has tried it out? I have done mine online at the free H&R Block site for about 4 years. It is very easy, although my taxes are not difficult. Last year for the first time I didn't even have to itemize because I am almost done paying my mortgage so I have very little interest paid in for it and the standard deduction was the better deal. I typically do file my state taxes by paper form because I am cheap and do not want to pay the $20.00 (?) that H & R Block charges for that. Although last year I did suck it up and pay it so that I could e-file, and now I am spoiled so I will probably do the same this year. The one thing with the free version is that it does not keep your information stored so each year you have to enter names, SS#s, etc. But for free I am willing to enter in this info year after year.

compeateropeator check out your state's website. I'm in California and can e-file for free at ftb.ca.gov.

Thanks for the reminder, I will check out my state's (Vermont) tax site again this year to see. In the past there was some criteria that you had to meet to be able to e-file for free in my state...and of course I didn't meet them. I will check again this year.

I did a quick dry run in early January to confirm that I was going to owe the feds a little and get some back from the state. I maybe should sit down and do them this weekend so I can e-file and get the state refund in time to pay the feds. Manually. With paper returns. And earlier than April--last year, the tracking was weird and I wasn't sure they got my return in time.
If anyone's wondering, the IRS's advice (because I DID sit on hold for phone support) was to check and see when/if my check got cashed because that would be the surest way to know they got the return-- they will deposit the check before processing the return, it seems. Thankfully, the check cleared the bank before April 15.

I just did my daughters on turbotax tonight, and both federal and state were free. She's 17 and has her first job, so it's really easy and only took a few minutes. She's going to NYC on a school trip over spring break, it would be nice to have her refund for spending money. If anyone is a Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards member, if you click through their rapid rewards shopping site and e-file with turbotax you get 1000 bonus points. That applies even to the totally free version.

We basically owe our souls to the IRS this year, but are also waiting to hear on a pending job offer for my husband, as his current military contract is up in about six weeks. We have the money to pay the IRS, but are holding on to it until after a new job is secure - just in case we need it as we transition. I'm optimistic that it will be before the tax deadline, and be more than happy to file and pay that debt off when we're able to.

Filed the last Fri in Jan and had my refund the following Friday. I do ours on H&R Block online and have for years. Quick and easy.
