Personally I would not have had a problem with my niece and nephew coming to my house in their swim wear, especially if they were on their way to the beach. I think it's inappropriate at a shopping mall or restaurant etc but fine at a private dwelling. Especially for kids. Agreed, but I think we've discovered before that quite often, American folk are more modest than say Europeans...or Aussies apparently

I've lived most of my life in beach communities and people wandering around in beachwear (swimsuits and cover up) is pretty much the norm... shoot when I was in my teens most of us would leave the beach and go to Mass on Sunday...they even had a surfboard rack outside. It doesn't bother me as long as folks have a shirt/sundress/any type of cover up on, but I draw the line at shopping in your bikini...I don't care how drop dead gorgeous you think your body is!

I was in Mexico a year ago and BFF got her feet burned (3rd degree burns) from hot sand. We had to go to the hospital ASAP from our resort and I was wearing a 2 piece bathing suit and a tshirt. I didn't have time to go to change. I had to get to the hospital with her as she was going into shock. I felt so out of place at the hospital dressed like that! Totally not appropriate but we went in an emergency and I didn't know what else to do.

Remember the debacle over at the Bucket about 14 year old in a bikini who had dared to come indoors to get a second helping of food without covering up? If I remember correctly it was a post christening swimming party. There was a general swoon because this gauche child had had the temerity to grow a pair of breasts.

I'd say the beach, the pool (entire area, including snack bar, etc.), the boardwalk or similar area near the beach, the route between your home and the beach if you live nearby, and anywhere in your own home or backyard. I am more tolerant of small children in their bathing suits in other areas. My D2 wore her bathing suit to day care one day (with other clothes accompanying her in a bag) - it wasn't worth the fight. This is a "creative" child who also went to day care in a tutu, a Halloween costume (not on Halloween), etc.
I wouldn't have minded the shirtless nephew and the niece in bikini bottoms at my house, particularly since they're on the way to the beach. I don't think they should go to a store or restaurant in that attire, but it certainly wouldn't have bothered me if they stopped by dressed that way enroute to the beach.

I grew up in Southern California and everyone I knew had a pool in their backyard. We lived in the summer in our swim suits and flip flops (we called them thongs, which means something altogether different now). I could not care less if someone wears a swimsuit wherever they feel comfortable. But then again, I don't have a problem with people wearing sweatpants to the grocery store sans makeup. As. Me to this list. I have no pool, but wear a tankini out in the yard and read my book with the dog. I put a long strapless coverup on if I go anywhere.

Just want to clarify: I think a swimsuit and cover up is fine. A swimsuit without a cover up is not.

I live in a tourist area as well. Local restaurants and businesses have started posting signs stating that certain outfits are not appropriate. It has gotten out of hand. I don't mind if they have a cover up, and are running around on the way to the river or on the way back.

We have a pool, so we wear our swimwear around the house, sometimes without cover ups. I wear my swimwear with cover up when we goto watermarks and would go into a store on the way there I that.

I must have low standards. As long as you are covered up appropriately, it doesn't bother me. Swim shorts with a shirt, a bathing suit with a cover up that resembles clothing...it doesn't bother me. Grocery store, Target, fast food restaurant, etc. Fot nicer places, I would expect nicer clothing.
Then again, yoga pants don't bother me, either.
I know many people that refuse to wear shorts or sleeveless shirts out in public. But this is Summer in Texas--I pretty much live in shorts, sleeveless shirts and flip flops... the horror!

This is me. I grew up in Florida, and lived primarily in college towns where people tend to be more relaxed about this kind of thing and seeing people out and about in swimsuits doesn't even phase me. Now, I will admit to raising an eyebrow to people who don't even attempt to cover up, but I am not going flip a gasket if they don't.

I would be fine with the situation. Family on the way to the beach wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest. I don't like to see swimwear in the grocery store or at restaurants. Just bugs me. I completely agree with this, and I think cover-ups are everybody's friend! JamH

I didn't post you're whole quote because my teen boys have taken to wearing shorts as bathing suits these days (for reasons that can be listed some other time) and I didn't want to be a hypocrite, lol.

We go to the lake almost every weekend. We wear our swimsuits to the lake. The girls and I wear cover-ups that look like dresses and DH always wears a shirt. We stop at the convenience store for gas and snacks. We also may run into the grocery store or even stop in a restaurant for dinner.
Our hair may be a mess and you might be able to see swim suit straps, but we are STILL better dressed than half of the girls and women around with their butts and bra straps hanging out of "regular" clothes!

Well, this just reminds me that I wanted to ask the Peas about a cute beach coverup. All the ones I see are so ugly or way too short.

I am normally pretty easy going about attire for day to day - I'm fine with dropping the kids off in PJ pants, sweats at the grocery store, etc. I draw the line at swimwear. That said, in this case, where they are on the way to the beach, I wouldn't have an issue with it. I also wouldn't be bothered by it outside, at say, a park/the farmer's market, etc, post trip to the beach/pool. Even though I get it, I'm still a bit bugged by the double standard that says it's more acceptable for men because their swim trunks just look like shorts (assuming they aren't one of the 10% or so I still see wearing Speedos around our beaches). Same here.

According to DH I'm the only person that finds it disrespectful and inappropriate to wear swimwear when you're not at the beach or the pool. I'll give you the parking lot of the beach or pool, the backyard if you have a pool, heck your own house if you have a pool. I don't have a pool and don't live particularly close to the beach. My nephew came in here today sans shirt and my niece was in a tied off t-shirt and bikini bottoms. I think it's inappropriate. Yes, they were on the way to the beach and it's hot out, but not hot enough to be half naked in my house. It would not have occurred to me to be offended by that at all! They were on their way to the beach? And they're your relatives? It's not like they pooped on your floor. In a place of business or something, the bikini bottoms/no shirt thing wouldn't fly, but I would never by offended by one of my relatives popping over in swimwear before heading to a pool/beach. Unless they had like, visibly unruly pubes that were poking out or something. That would skew my opinion, probably.

I live a few blocks from the best beaches in NC and I see it ALL and then some but I still think if you are in a public place, resturant etc... put on a shirt and shoes! It really skeeves me out to see bare feet in the grocery store.

Not in the lobby of the Omni hotel in Dallas. Preteen girls running around in nothing but bikinis. In a huge crowd of delegates, press, and guests.
