I admit it, I got off to a late start this morning because I watched the first episode of The Handmaid's Tale. I'll definitely keep watching! So post-apocalyptic adult fare. I've read the book, watched the movie and this adds in modern touches with music & technology. The whole time I watched I had a feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach, but I couldn't stop. Like a train wreck!
Hope others watch and can chime in.

I can't wait! I love Elizabeth Moss. Will watch tonight. I know I will cry when they take her kid away in the woods.

I haven't watched it yet. I watched the original movie in college and was a little traumatized by the sex scene, you know the one, it was so awful. Can someone tell me if it is as awful in the remake as it was in the movie?

Planning to watch. I read the book in high school and saw the Natasha Richardson version.
For those of you who have started, do you think it's fine for a 14-year-old high school student, in terms of graphic content? I am fine with her watching 13 Reasons Why but not Game of Thrones, if that is helpful.

From the trailers it doesn't look like they are shying away from graphic content. Save

I was fascinated. And a little scared. No, a lot scared. The flashbacks to when the government changed were waaay to real.

I am fine with her watching 13 Reasons Why but not Game of Thrones, if that is helpful. It's nothing like Game of Thrones at all. I can't watch Game of Thrones because of the rampant sex and violence. I haven't seen 13 Reasons yet, so not sure about that. There are multiple rape scenes that are not graphic and some people might not call it rape, but for me, to indenture fertile women to bear children for infertile couples is rape. It IS disturbing and she'll likely relate to it in current terms, but if you tell her the book was written over 30 years ago (damn I'm old) and some cultures have always had periods of striving to enslave/demean women, it brings it into broader focus.

I have been looking forward to this since I first heard Hulu was making it. Their other series have been so well done, I never doubted that they'd do a good job with this. I started watching the first episode yesterday and was totally sucked in immediately. DH read this article today, and now he wants to watch too, so I'll be waiting until tonight to see more. I'll be curious to see if he likes it. It's not his typical fare, but I think he might actually like it.

I bought her the book but she has resisted reading . I did finally get to the first episode last night and I agree with you about the content. If I can interest her, I will probably have her watch; I just wouldn't have if things were really graphic (for me, while I love Game of Thrones, it's the graphic sexual violence in particular that makes it so I won't let her watch).

I watched the first episode last night. I feel like it's staying pretty true to the book... I like it so far.

Binged all three available episodes last night/today. Wow! Amazing and chilling. I read the book a billion years ago as a teen, but at my current age/ability to understand the underlying themes and in the current political climate, the story has gone from being an interesting (if far-fetched) dystopian fiction to a disturbingly plausible future reality.
A really well done series so far, though. The acting is great and it's been very well-adapted for the screen. I can't wait to see the rest.

I have not read the book. Cut off my cable this week, got Hulu and watched all four episodes - WOW. Fascinating and creepy. I like how they use the music in it. I will keep watching and probably read the book.

I'm enjoying each episode more and more - I like the bit of sass that Elizabeth Moss brings to the role. I saw this week that it's been picked up for a second season already.

4 episodes have been released so far. There are supposed to be 10. I read that it has already been renewed for a second season. I had thought it was going to be more of a mini-series of the book, but I guess not if there are multiple seasons.
We read the book as part of a homeschool course dd and I created on dystopian literature. Unbelievable how those themes have risen to the forefront in the US.

Orphan Black fans, did you notice the Doctor was the actor who plays Donnie? Good thing she didn't take him up on his offer considering the events of that evening.
I was in horror during the scene where they were practicing the ceremony and it dawned upon them what was going to be expected of them.
I wonder if they'll flashback more to how this craziness took hold. I need to reread the book. At my advanced age of 46, I'd be dead or one of those crazy aunts.

It's SO GOOD. I just finished Episode 4 this morning. I re-read the book in the fall, so the story is pretty fresh in my mind. I absolutely LOVE the incorporation of the music, especially in Episode 3. That ending... "Fuck."
It's really outstanding.

As someone who loved the book, I am interested to know why you hated it. (I have these discussions with my librarian friends... one in particular almost NEVER likes what I like. We're book opposites!)

It has been years and years but I just remember it was depressing. I didn't like it either, but I don't know if it's because I listened to it rather than actually read it. Claire Danes was the narrator and she was so monotone. I never felt any emotion and I was surprised when the book ended. I thought, "That's it?" I wished it had spent more time in Offred's prior life.

But again, as a youngster that's probably understandable.
Years later I decided to revisit the book and realized that I didn't like her writing style. So even a more mature me couldn't get in to it.

Fair enough! The beautiful thing about books is that there are SO MANY to love! People are shocked to learn that I absolutely loathe Jonathan Franzen's books. LOL!
