V4 was finally released today. It has a very different look, but is very user friendly. I think it is easier to work with. I updated from an older version with no Silhouette Cloud - to the new V4. I did go ahead and set up the cloud and allow all my files to transfer. It was seamless. All my files transferred perfectly - Silhouette ones, and my own files. I do recommend doing a backup first. www.silhouetteamerica.com/software

Thanks for the heads up iowgirl but I think I'll leave it for now. I really don't like the cloud arrangement and downgraded to a previous version. Maybe when I have a lot of time to fiddle around over the summer, ....

You should still have Designer Edition - but you can tell for sure by looking at the top of your screen. It will say Silhouette Studio Designer Edition. You can also click on HELP, the About Silhouette Studio and the box that pops up will tell you the full version number and it will say Designer Edition in the box also. I really don't like the cloud arrangement and downgraded to a previous version. Maybe when I have a lot of time to fiddle around over the summer, .... I held off - but they really have things working well now. They spent a lot of time testing this release. So far it has worked great. I love the floating panels. The workflow is so much nicer. Designer Edition also has Trace By Color now.

I haven't used my machine in ages.
What do you mean by "the cloud"? What is it and do we have to use it? So many of Cricuts problems are related to having to use cloud based software. Did Silhouette go down that path too?
Could someone please direct me to a 'dummies' explanation to V4? All I'm seeing in FB groups are dire warnings about making sure to backup your files. Sounds scary!
Sigh. I'm so behind on what's happening with the Silhouette and Cricut machines.

I'm not sure if Im going to update yet or not

I had upgraded to the cloud, but went back to a previous version because I hated it. I wish they have you the option to use cloud or not with any updated version. I think I may wait to upgrade this time too.

I actually really like the cloud capability. I only have a Portrait but my mom just bought a Cameo 3. So now, I can go to her house, sign into my cloud account and cut my files on her machine. It's so easy, I love it.
Not sure I'm ready to update to V4 yet. I barely know how to use V3 lol.

I just updated to the Cameo3 and am using V3 too. I am still trying to find my way around, I'm not sure Im ready for V4 yet

It's not at all like the Cricut software, where you have to be online to use it. It just also stores your files on the Silhouette Cloud - so if you use two computers, your files will be accessible from both. Or if you use someone elses machine somewhere, you can log in to your account and have all your stuff there. Your files are still stored on your computer though. So you would still have everything to use, even if you had no internet connection. My own files that I created and saved in the Library where there after the update - but I do not recommend that as the only way of storing those types of files.

Well I'm not ready to update to V4 yet, but I did update to the latest V3 edition and transferred most of my non-store designs to the cloud. I didn't like the divided workspace. seems to be working ok although I did have to redo some of my keywords and categories which didn't transfer properly.

Well I spoke too soon. Just open the software and can't sign into the cloud because the maximum number of active devices for my account has been reached. Oh yes, that would be one laptop???!!!

Well, at least it's a quick-fix if you have to call them tomorrow. If you go to v4, please post. I think we both hated the same things, so I'll just wait it out and let you be the guinea pig.

I never upgraded the last time. When it first came out, users complained about two things:
Some reported that their non-Silhouette Design Store files disappeared. Reportedly they did not show up on the cloud, and they disappeared from their computer, too. Customer service helped some people regain their missing files, but I never heard if everyone did, so I was pretty leery of updating after that. I have a huge Silhouette library that includes a large number of non-design store files.
I was told that they did away with the non-cloud back-up (Export Library) function when they came out with version 3 (or whichever version stored files on the cloud) After all, with the cloud, who needs it? Me. I want a hard copy back up. I tend to do multiple back ups of my photos and other files on three different external hard drives. Any computer, hard drives, and/or cloud system can be hacked, or fail, or whatever.
I called and talked to customer service about the cloud issue, and they said that was the route they were going, and not to upgrade if I wanted to avoid using the cloud or be able to still have the Export Library function to use on a second computer. They made it sound as though I had to be online to access my files. Maybe that CS rep was wrong, but I detest that aspect of Cricut Design Space, so I chose not to upgrade.
So how do you back up your files, without using the cloud? Or are you just backing them up onto the cloud?

So how do you back up your files, without using the cloud? Or are you just backing them up onto the cloud? I was just messing with this on Saturday. I have two locations to choose from in my library. One is "local user" which are designs that are stored on my computer not in the cloud. Then listed underneath that is my cloud account. I did a right click on local user and selected export and it created the Silhouette Library file I was used to that is all the designs stored on my computer. I took this file to the second computer, imported the library, then all of my designs were there. If I remember right I could right click my cloud account and do the same thing but I didn't see a need to since all I have to do is sign into the cloud to access the files. Maybe this would be useful if you plan on using the Silhouette somewhere that there is no internet access.

Ohh! I can't wait to check it out. I was a little nervous when I heard V4 was released. I'm hoping no bugs are found! I had to upgrade to V3 finally when I got a new machine from Santa.

I decided to see what the Silhouette School blog said about the upgrade that was the first to use the cloud. Essentially they said that Cameo 2 users should not upgrade. I have a Cameo 2, not 3, so I am wondering if there are really that many advantages to Cameo 2 users to upgrade to this new version?

I have a Cameo 2 and just finally switched to the cloud version of v3 because I don't want to get left further and further behind with software enhancements eg the trace by colour feature in v4. I had a glitch yesterday but Silhouette sorted it for me and the cloud seems to be working fine.

You don't have to be online to access your files in the cloud. They sync to the cloud but are also stored locally on your machine.

Okay, more questions:
Is there any major advantage to updating for Cameo 2 users? Some obvious reason or amazing ability that users will love?
If you updated, are you excited about the new update?

If you have a Mac it's easy - you can download multiple versions of the software, keep them all and decide which one to run. If you have a PC you'll need to rename the version you don't want to keep before you install the other one. Just make sure you back up/export your library first. SaveSave

Well I had my cloud error back today - max devices exceeded even though I only have one laptop. After waiting an hour to talk to Silhouette (I assume lots of people calling about v4) I was told there is a glitch in the cloud software that if you use more than 50% of your allocated storage it will give a 'devices exceeded' warning. So I've been given 4GB storage to try and resolve the issue.

I just installed V.4 and I like it so far. I am not used to it but took a few minutes to find things as they have really changed the interface but you will acclimate to it in a few minutes. One thing I feel is really nice is they have tutorials under Help So you don't have to leave and go sign in somewhere else. I will let you know as I progress thru it.

My software updated a few months ago and I downgraded back to Ver 3.6.57. If you do downgrade, be sure to go into Edit, Preferences, General and change Check for updates to Never.
