I found a set of Spectrum Noir markers (the Darks set) at Marshall's, here in Canada. I've been reading mixed reviews, and was wondering if anyone on this board has any recent experience with these? Interested to hear your thoughts.

I have some. I don't like them as much as my copics but if you want to play around and get a feel for alcohol markers without investing a ton of money, spectrum noirs are okay to start with.
I will say that buying a "darks" set would probably not be my first choice-- harder to blend darks.
Oh, I will say that the ones with the hexagonal barrel are more recent. Ones prior to that were constantly drying out but I think the manufacturer was able to resolve that with the second generation.

My SIL bought some of these at Winners in Canada and some were dried up and she doesn't like them that much... That was over a year ago however, so as the above poster noted, maybe the hexagonal barrels are better?

I really like my spectrum noir markers! I love my copics, but let's face it, for $5 a marker, it really gets pricey. I found that they do blend nicely. The only thing about spectrum noir markers is that they really have a lot of ink (so it bleeds easily if you're coloring a stamped image), so you have to be careful at first. But overall, pretty good with a nice, low price point.

I don't have any alcohol markers, so I picked some up with the 60% off at JoAnn's today. For the cost of 2 Copics, I got a dozen Noirs to play with. I don't feel like I'm out if I don't like them, so they're worth giving a go, and I can't get very far with only 2 copics.

I am really new to alcohol markers. I found the Spectrum Noir markers at a great price and ended up buying one of each of 5 different 24 packs. I love them. I find they blend really well. Some colors take a little more work than others but the results are great. I will admit I have avoided trying Copic markers because I'm afraid I will love them even more and I really can't afford a Copic's obsession.

I think the bleeding inks are reduced if you use a paper formulated for alcohol inks. A Copic wizard I met on another board recommended Neenah paper, and stamping with Momento inks when colouring with alcohol markers.

I keep reading that the old ones sucked, but no-one specified how I could tell the difference. I bought the darks set since it has more of the colors that I feel I will use... I wanted to get browns and greys in one pack, so I could color in my stamped critters more easily. I am still unsure if this is the right set to get though, since I can't seem to find any recent swatches of just the darks set. Decisions, decisions!

Do you have the Darks set as well? In your opinion, do the colors work well for colouring in plants and critters? I have exactly the same fears about Copics! If I'm ever in Japan again, maybe I will buy them there, since they are significantly cheaper, but I can't allow myself to fall for the temptation here!

This is a link to someone's etsy studio listing... it is not mine, I don't know them. But it looks like their third picture is a handcolored swatch chart. Obviously, colors may still vary, especially on computer monitors, but maybe it's what you want.

I would have to figure out which ones came in the dark set. The darker colors are harder to blend unless you have several tints of the same color. But I have found that with patience I can get a pretty nice blend out of any 3 colors.

I have quite a few and my only complaint I have is that some of the caps are really hard to get off of the smaller tip end. I end up pulling off the whole end of the marker instead of just the cap. This does not happen on the wider end. And it seems to be the colors that I love the most.
