Isn't it fun to learn that something so commonplace is not commonplace elsewhere So question for those who eat soft boiled eggs without egg cups - doesn't all the yolk flow out if it's just rolling around on a plate? My dh eats soft-boiled eggs and he just puts them in a small bowl. If you use an egg cup how do you get the top part of the shell off? Then while you're eating the egg doesn't the shell crack and get bits of shell in your egg? If you do what RedSquirrelUK has just written you end up with this. Then leaving the shell in tact around it you dip your soldiers in it and then scoop the rest of it out with a spoon until you have an empty shell left in your egg cup.

I own a couple but rarely use them. I do love soft-boiled eggs for breakfast but rarely go to the trouble of making them. BTW, I am from Portugal but I was brought up in the UK where they are quite common, I think.

When I make soft-boiled eggs, I have my own little process. I crack open each egg with my knife, scoop it out, and smoosh it on a slice of buttered toast, sprinkle with salt and pepper, then eat with a fork and knife. Delicious -- and no need for an egg cup.
I have the timing down to a science, based on the size of the egg and the original temp of the water. 30 seconds either way makes all the difference!

I used to collect china egg cups. But I never used them. Growing up, we always had egg cups in our house and they were used.
They aren't easy to find in stores anymore.

It's nothing like scrambled eggs because the white is pretty much solid and spread over the toast and the yolk is nice and runny and spread over the toast. Best of both worlds!

I loved soft boiled eggs as a kid. I know what the egg cups are but we never had them, my grandmother just scooped out the soft cooked eggs into a small bowl. I always got shell in it when I tried it myself. I bought a cute set of egg holders once for my Easter table setting, but no one wanted soft boiled eggs so that was a bust, lol. Since no one else wanted any I didn't bother making myself one so now the egg holders are packed away in the garage in the Easter decorations box but every year they stay behind when I unpack. Now I want some with toast soldiers. I have a great little egg steamer I got off of QVC that makes perfect hb eggs, and it does soft boiled too but I haven't ever done them in there. I think I'll try it soon.

I couldn't really vote because I used to use then add a child and I never bought any because I really didn't eat boiled eggs very often but now wish I had some because I eat boiled eggs quite a bit. Maybe I can get the ones we had from my mom, I bet they don't use then anymore either. I hate burning my fingers on hot eggs, trying to peel them and even using a spoon, it's still hot to hold them in place. My mom had great ones with a wide area to store your shells and spoon

I'm familiar with egg cups from vacationing in Germany to visit family. We don't do soft boiled eggs, so we have no need to own any, but I've seen some really lovely ones.

I do have a set that belonged to a grandmother, but they are packed away.
That's not how we eat our eggs, so the cups, while pretty, are of no use to me in their traditional use.
My plan is to use them to hold decorated eggs at Easter time, but I wanted to wait until my kids were just a bit older. I have been putting out breakable decorations for a few years now, but I notice that the 7 year old still often likes to play with or handle them (and yes, some things have been broken), so the heritage pieces I'm keeping packed away a bit longer.

I voted yes to having used egg cups and to have some. My grandmother was from Britain, so I was exposed to egg cups at a very young age. I now have her set. I don't use them, but I do smile when I look at them. I inherited one or two that I used to use a lot when I was a kid. I haven't used them in ages but plan to when I can get back to where they've been stored. They always make me very happy to see, as well. I never have made soldiers out of my toast. Never even heard of doing that until 2 peas. I tried doing that for a bite or two once and it just seemed wrong. Guess I'm too American to fully appreciate them. <True story>

I would put the bowl on a small plate and eat the eggs from the bowl just as I ate anything else in a bowl or on a plate sitting on the table. That's not something I ever thought twice about. The biggest thing is just how different eggs taste straight out of the shell and from a bowl, where they tend to get mixed up a bit. It really is the little things in life.

We grew up (with my Italian mom--it was Dad's family that had roots in England) making soft boiled eggs, but she just scooped them out onto a full piece of toast, and that's how we ate them---with a fork that we used to squash the egg onto the toast and then cut and eat the toast & egg together.

You reminded me that I actually HAVE a set of these. They must buried somewhere in our basement with other Easter decorations that haven't been used in a while. I used them one year for breakfast on Easter to hold the decorated eggs, before we proceeded to rip the shell off and eat the hard boiled egg. My kids haven't decorated eggs in years, so I haven't seen them in a while. It did make a festive table.

I'm from Belgium. We used egg cups my whole life. I have several sets, I now live in America.
My husband (American) had no idea what they were the first time I used one to serve him an egg.
I like them for all kinds of things. Their obvious use of course plus; Easter table decoration with coloured eggs, Easter or spring table place card (chocolate egg with name written on it) and sometimes I'll use the plain white ones as salt/pepper "shakers", Easter or spring table with a single small flower clustered down the table with tea lights....one Easter I used my pastel ceramic ones with little bits of (fake) grass that I placed down the table center with my other decorations, each cup then had a few jelly beans or a teeny chocolate bunny I found at a local store.
