My mom has some antique ones that belonged to her grandparents (maybe great grandparents) they are very delicate. But they don't eat soft boiled eggs, so they aren't used.
I have a pair of Milka egg cups for chocolate easter eggs I picked up when we lived in the Netherlands.

ETA: Apparently they are for soft boiled eggs too? How does that even work? They're only for soft boiled eggs, silly. (No offense meant. I'm just teasing in case it isn't obvious.) So question for those who eat soft boiled eggs without egg cups - doesn't all the yolk flow out if it's just rolling around on a plate? If you chop it up a bit with the white, then it's a lot like an easy-over fried egg and yes, the yolk does leak onto the plate or bowl. I can't imagine how anyone could eat a soft boiled egg without putting it in an egg cup! You can do it easy enough, but it doesn't taste the same. If you use an egg cup how do you get the top part of the shell off? Then while you're eating the egg doesn't the shell crack and get bits of shell in your egg? You tap around the top of the egg with your spoon or a knife. That cracks the shell in a neat circle all round. Then you lift the top off with your spoon, and scoop the egg out of it. If there are any little bits of unattached shell around the rim then you just pull them off. The egg is then open and ready to be dipped into. The egg cup keeps the egg upright and whole, and no, bits don't fall in unless you're really rough. But that's why you have to have "soldiers" cut to the right size to fit the hole. I just bash the top of the egg with my spoon and peel the cracked shell off. I tap the top to break it and peel the shell off until I have an opening big enough for the spoon. That way I don't remove any of the egg with the shell. Not all that different from peeling a hard boiled egg except I only tap the tip of one end and tap more gently. I meant the egg itself. How do you dig into the egg if it's rolling around the bowl? I hold the side of the egg cup but it's not hot. I recently started making soft boiled eggs in a steamer my son had bought. It actually has a plastic plate made to hold eggs, so the timing is really super easy. But... I don't have my egg cups. I've found that they aren't as hard to eat out of the shell as I'd thought they would be since they cool down pretty fast once the tops are removed. You can keep the whole egg or just the bottom of the egg resting on the bowl while digging out the inside with a spoon. It's actually easier than I expected. Who knew?

Just rembered as children we had little "hats" to keep the eggs warm while we were eating other things at breakfast 😄 Somethings like this Or this The last 30 years we have used this from tupperware

I had soft boiled eggs and soldiers for breakfast this morning because of this thread. Ha ha! I had them for lunch - because of this thread - with Marmite toast! Mmmmm... Actually, another reason I haven't had boiled eggs and soldiers for a while is because when we got the new kitchen, I was talked into getting an induction hob. That works by pulsing the energy, so it's impossible to get a rolling boil, and is consequently impossible to time an egg properly. So I bought myself an egg boiler, which is a gadget and therefore really fun to use.

gillyp I had exactly the same soldier egg cup growing up - it maybe in my treasures box in the attic We must be of a similar era. I have no idea what became of mine. Probably thrown out durin a house move. I feel the need to own one again. Hope yours is safely in the attic JoP

My mom made soft boiled eggs for us as kids. I don't love eggs so I don't really make them often. When I do it's whites only. I hate yolk.
TJ Maxx has egg cups all the time.

I hate all of you. I had to have a soft-boiled egg on buttered toast for dinner, along with a cup of tea made with water boiled in my electric kettle.
I don't even like soft-boiled eggs. grrrrrr

Sorry but I'm finding this hilarious: "What's an egg cup?" This Brit loves her boiled eggs with Marmite toast, although I admit to going many years before buying a matching set. I got 4 matching white egg cups a few years ago and somehow my life became complete. ETA: Now I want boiled eggs and Marmite soldiers for lunch. So funny I don't know what an egg cup is but I do now what Marmite is.. my stepmum is British... (I'm guessing either she didn't like soft boiled eggs or we had egg cups and I didn't know)... but holy hell Marmite is NASTY.... shivers.....

Another Brit who had no idea that egg cups weren't common place. I sometimes have mashed egg in a bowl, where I scoop it out and chop it in a bowl with lots of pepper and then sorta spread it on toast. But more usually it's soft boiled in an egg cup with marmite soldiers. We have several designs - ones for Easter, every day ones and posh ones. I think we might have to have eggs tomorrow for breakfast.

We own several sizes and colours. Soft-boiled eggs are what you eat when you get sick in my family. You have toast with butter and dip the toast into the egg yolk. My mother was British/German so she probably got that from her mother.

I have two on my kitchen counter but they aren't use for eggs. I keep one on my counter to hold my wedding ring when I'm working with something messy in the kitchen. The other one I use to hold dimes that I randomly find. (Sidenote: I tend to find dimes often in places; inside my shoe, when I pull down my bed sheets, in the washer, on the floor of my car when I haven't had any change, on my office floor, etc.) I just like to see them all together. Makes me smile for some reason.
