I've been watching a Youtuber who uses DIY page kits for a long time. Don't get me wrong - I love her videos. But one thing I've noticed is that she uses whatever is in the kit whether it matches the pictures or not. She seems easy going and laid back about it. I tend to not buy a lot of themed supplies because they make me feel limited. I'm picky about word stickers or phrases and ephemera with words on them. If they don't match the pictures I don't use them even if the style or color works. Otherwise it feels like it doesn't make sense. I've eased up on rigid chronological scrapping but I can't bring myself to use that random flamingo unless there was an actual flamingo in my pictures or, at the very least, something tropical.
Maybe I'll have to make some fruity, colorful, over the top cocktail to finally use that flamingo.
I just wondered if other scrappers are laid back about supply themes and picture topics matching or if you're like me - they have to match.

I'm wondering if we watch the same person. For me, not as much as before. I'm trying new things I try some random (but not weird) random embellishments for fun but my clusters need to make sense to me.

I'd use a flamingo on a tropical beach vacation layout that had no flamingos in the pictures, but I wouldn't use one on a lake page. I can't think of a time I have used word stickers that didn't go with the mood or theme of a page though.
Now I want to know who you are watching so I can see it.

No "best day ever" stickers on days that were only OK I am a little too literal. I have a layout with a photo of a flamingo from a trip to Hawaii, but they weren't IN in 2011 so no flamingo embellishments were used... now I want to go back and fix that situation

I'm choosy. If a word or an image has nothing to do with the story I'm telling, well then it's not going on my page. My layouts are usually photo-heavy, so there isn't much room for much "stuff" beyond the title anyway.
I just don't buy a lot of premade ephemera because I know that so much of it would go unused. But I think that's one reason why it's so hard for me to make clusters on my layouts - I just don't have as much extra stuff as many scrappers seem to. I don't try to make clusters often anyway, really only when I have just one or two photos on a page, so it's easy enough for me to buy something specific to the story or to make something to add.

I wouldn't use something that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but I will use embellishments that aren't maybe completely on theme. For example, I made a layout last night about our cat having an abscess and being sad because he had the "cone of shame" and had to stay in the house for 2 weeks. I used a camera die-cut and a house die-cut as embellishments. I guess you could say they fit the theme since he was on house arrest and I took photos of him.
I'm not always really literal with my themes on my pages, but I wouldn't use phrases or word embellishments that don't fit. That's just weird. Do you think it's because she needs to use the product due to being on a design team, maybe?

i'm more able to use an image that doesn't make perfect sense than words. i can remember wasaay back in 2002 i told my scrappy bff that i had trouble using words on a page. i have major troubles with the word thickers. which i continue to buy anyway.

I only will use an embellishment or phrase that matches my photos, you would think that would stop me from buying themed products but yet I still do (as my stash keeps growing).
I do try to be creative sometimes in order to use them by making "Love You A Ton" (with elephants) or "Wild Thing" (with animals) or "Little Lady" (ladybug) or "Social Butterfly" (butterflies) or "You're Sweet" (donuts or cupcakes) type pages in order to use some of the cute embellishments I have.

I'll use icons that evoke memories of the event scrapped. Flamingos say tropical to me, so I would use it on any of my cruise pics. I would use a taco on a pic of a fajita party my family had. Bears are camping or zoo. Word phrases do need to be appropriate for me. That is my logic.

I'm too literal. There are some icons which I could use in a more general way (arrows, shapes, a few other things), but I would only use a flamingo sticker on a page about a trip to somewhere there are flamingos. But almost certainly not on a page where there actually is a photo of a flamingo, because that just feels like overkill to me! I want things that support and add to my pictures. If there is a tent in the photo I would never use a tent sticker on the page. But I might use it on another camping page where we had stayed in a tent but the tent wasn't in the picture, or something like that.
In short, I very rarely used anything. Clean and simple! >.<

I have to agree with you. I want my pictures and stories to coordinate with my papers and embellishments.
I am very humored with the timing of this post. As I type, I am watching a scrappie youtuber using a kit she put together. I am not feeling well, but I am pretty sure she put the kit together before picking the picture. The kit is predominately pink so she has a flamingo in it. The layout is about reaching a mountain summit. That flamingo is traveling all over her desk and.....fast forward.....it didn't make the layout. I would have never thought of using pink for this picture but it is a super great layout. Fyi I am watching nicolejones911 scrapbook process 641. I have been binge watching her youtube channel all day. Sigh...wish I had a tenth of her energy and talent.

I try to tell a story on eac page. If I can make a twist in the title or journaling to fit the remade phrase Or the icon, I will use it. If not, then I don't. Don't need everything to literally match my photos, but I dont add a lot of random stuff to my pages unless it supports the theme I want.

What I use has to fit the photos or theme reasonably well. Definitely wouldn't use random sayings that don't make sense. There are some embellishments I'd use in a general way like shapes, banners, even flowers but some icons just seem too specific to me - like flamingos, zebras etc.

For me words and phrases need to match the pictures and layout theme. I do sometimes use ephemera or icons that don't necessarily go with the pictures but they're mostly small and vintage looking. Kind of depends on what I'm doing.

I try to use things but some icons are just too weird. Also ...as I am in Australia...a lot of the winter themed stuff is irrelevant. It doesn't snow here ever...so can't use anything snow themed at all.Visited snow once with my kids when they were little but that does not translate to much stuff for a couple of layouts. Also......I HATE the cheesy sayings

I'm super literal. It has to work together for me or I don't use it. I start w/pix, then paper then embellishments. The paper and embellishments HAVE TO support the story of the pix (for me).
That's why I lost interest in Studio Calico YEARS ago. Their layouts always looked to me like colors all over the place; pix w/no reference (that I could see from the story) to the items used on the page, etc. It was all just so random, like April bought whatever was on sale at random dollar-store discounters and just slammed them together into a "kit".

I mostly want the papers and embellishments to support the story or capture the feeling for me so a taco would likely only go on a page that involved Mexican food. I might use the title, journaling, or word strips to help explain the "random" embellishment. If there is a tent in the photo I would never use a tent sticker on the page. But I might use it on another camping page where we had stayed in a tent but the tent wasn't in the picture, or something like that. I would definitely do this.

I've watched a few of her videos and from what I've seen she builds her page kits in bulk then comes through and chooses photos to add to them. While the process clearly works for her I could never do it this way because what if I need that flamingo for another page? How would I ever find it?

You're me!! Yeah, I can never get into the random trends, like mustaches and owls and foxes and feathers for that reason. I don't have enough photos that make sense with those items. I do typically wind up with a few of those embellishments, because when they are trendy they are hard to avoid, and I tend to just hang on to them for ages until finally one day I finally have a pic that works with them. My personal reason for scrap booking is to tell a story...my photos and journaling together are the words (a picture paints a thousand words after all) and the embellishments I use are the illustrations for my stories. I feel like if I toss owl embellishments on a page about a day at the beach, it's like taking the illustrations from Moby Dick and putting them into Little Women instead. Now, when my teenage son scrap books with me on occasion, he uses anything. For him it's an artistic endeavor and anything that strikes him is great to use. Save

I am a matchy matchy, literal person for sure. I don't get when there is clashing patterns or when there is patterns or embellishments that have nothing to do with the story or photos. The one that used to get me was the random bicycle or hot air balloon on a page about baking or gardening, my brain just wanted to know why the random icon. I love neutral icons like hearts, stars and label tags as you can use them on pretty much anything but the really themey stuff gets put into its own folder so all of my Christmas is together as is my back to school lines etc.

I am kind of literal but I am willing to roll with something random. I used a flamingo on a Great Wolf Lodge layout that was located in the Poconos Mtns because I used pink and teal colors on the page. And I am working on a family album for my sister and one of my repeating icons is a gnome. It's from a simple stories collection and there was a cut apart card that said "to gnome me is to love me". I love a good pun and decided to go with it for the album.

I wouldn't use a flamingo for a northern Minnesota lake photo, but might use something woodsy, even if we didn't camp.

I used a zebra die cut on a picture of my cat that was laying on sheets with zebras all over them. My boyfriend asked me what the zebra was for. So even when the cat is laying on (really cool Martha Stewart Whim, by the way)zebra sheets, he didn't see the connect.
So I really don't understand all the random stuff on pages. And I agree that a flamingo die cut on a page with photos of flamingos seems like overkill, but I took a picture of flamingos at the zoo yesterday and I have a zillion flamingo embellishments so I'm slapping one of those on there, just to use them up.
