The guy who is in Taylor Swift's new video, Todric Hall I think is his name, was called a traitor for doing so. He said he got texts from people asking how he could be friends with a white person because they are incapable of love or friendship or some shit like that. John Legend's casting call for his new vid specifically called for older, fat, white people to play Trump supporters. I thought more than just those people voted for him? I've read plenty of people being called racist on this very board. On another thread, it sure read like Elaine called Snowsilver a Nazi over what seemed to amount to Snowsilver not responding to a particular post fast enough. And on this thread a pea implied that racism doesn't exist elsewhere in the world and is a uniquely American problem. World gone made indeed! Crazy and unreasonable comes in every size, shape, color, socio-economic class, and religion from anywhere in the world. It did before Trump and it will likely continue after him as well. It's easy to blame one man for others being more bold in their actions. The problem goes far beyond him and is a problem in some form wherever humans exist. I think some of them have just figured out how to handle it or hide it better. John Legend did not put out that casting call. The rest...well...my uncivil mouth will just be quiet.

Possibly one of the stupidest things I have ever read. I've seen the sentiment expressed here and elsewhere. White = racist. It has devolved to that in many places and for many people. Yeah I'd need a specific example. I didn't know your political leanings when I began reading this thread, but what you have said on this thread makes me believe you are biased against anyone calling anything racist.

Yes, I have read long posts about how you are racist even if you don't know you are racist. I stopped reading them because there really is no point. I clearly don't 'get it' I remember my grandfather. I loved him dearly, but he was blatantly anti anyone who wasn't a WASP. My father, his son, worked hard to make certain his children grew up with the view that every person should be evaluated by who they are, not what they look like. Today, this family is very colorful. And very close Being racist and having white privilege are two different things. Perhaps you are equating the two. Here is an excellent resource that clearly explains the difference. www.tolerance.org/professional-development/on-racism-and-white-privilege

If he didn't do it, then he has to be aware that it's making the rounds on media and he's being talked about. Maybe he'll address. I'd certainly like for him to. I've liked his music and don't want to be distracted from that. If something else I said bothers you, it's nothing compared to what I've read on here recently. But I do appreciate that you recognize when you can't be civil. I think many people could do better at that.

Ok... new one to me, too. Please explain. I've never heard those words being racist. I don't understand it. I just remember some AAs saying that white people don't know hard work; the slaves did. Or something like that. PB&J, I don't understand why it was called racist. I will just disregard then without content I still don't see how they were used and labeled as racist words.

Of course not. That's ridiculous. But we sure have reaped the benefits of it.

Blood is wanted, and no amount will ever satisfy. And I do blame the left. They've gleefully fueled the fires of racist accusations and won't stop until this entire country burns to ground. And these :I disagree - too many people following the far left's word. If you are white, you are automatically racist.
A jackass emboldened by all the fueling of racism decided to take it out on my son.
THIS is what I mean by typical LEFT. Thank you.

When someone brings up the term white fragility, this is what they're talking about. Poor kid. I sure hope he gets over this terrible experience. 🙄 I find this sarcastic/demeaning comment insensitive toward the feelings of a young person & hypocritical, given this poster admittedly already had a professional reputation as a racist before threatening to resign/was reassigned, after a month into the year as a new teacher at a middle school, to avoid "...The girls who have been attacking me this way are AA, and when I refuse to let them do whatever they want or hold them accountable for their behavior, they go and tell their parents I'm racist and the angry emails start." I disagree - too many people following the far left's word. If you are white, you are automatically racist. Nah. Your son just ran into a crazy. Every race has 'em! Ding ding, ding- we have a winner. Humans can tend to point out the worst in something and call it a norm. I also agree with what was mentioned up thread. People may be confusing "white privilege" with white=racist. I think people have it tough all over and when they see the word "privilege" they think "not with the way I'm struggling or how bad I have it". It is a relative new (or newly spread) term. I actually learned from my kids. I think on the surface things can be misinterpreted if unaware of real meaning. To me, I like to think white privilege means that with ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL whites would possibly receive privilege. I hope that makes sense (and is correct). ETA freecharlie said (can't get quote in quote to work) the posts I see from the left often back up what she is saying. The memes and posts from the left on fb also back up what she is saying.

^^^ that's one of the things I don't like about facebook and memes. It's BOTH sides. They take the worst examples or the "other side". I don't think it shows what the majority on either side feel. Just the far side of each. I think (and hope) we are mostly in the middle somewhere.

I finished that year successfully, learned a lot about myself in the process, and applied for (and got) a different job back at the elementary level in the same district. Of course not. That's ridiculous. But we sure have reaped the benefits of it. Thanks for pointing out he'd addressed it. I found it to be a pretty basic denial and imagine he'll not be doing business with that agency again. Yes, white people have reaped the benefits of racism. But discrimination can be a blade that cuts both ways. I've been discriminated against for being white or not black enough. Do I have white privilege? I accept that to an extent. But more than that, I realize that everyone's perception of such is not universal and depends greatly on life experience. I don't expect anyone to agree. Most peas seems to think such things don't happen. I think they do, just no where near the same scale. But to deny it exists at all seems short-sighted as well. I'd like to see the day when skin color doesn't matter and the student gets accepted or the Oscar goes to or the job goes to whoever is best qualified. But there was a pea who said that by taking skin color out of the equation entirely, we'd be denying her life experience and that of her ancestors. So what are we to do? I worry that society just can't win, that this is an issue that never truly goes away and comes to a head cyclically and we make some improvement but never truly solve the problem and that there are too many on both sides that keep that from happening.

Wow! That has to be the dumbest thing I've read recently. Not because institutional racism does not exist, it does, but because this person a very closed minded, divisive, uninformed mindset that will end up keeping her from her best potential. Perhaps she can open her mind and learn from her statement and it's consequences. If Munroe Bergdorf thinks racism is a fact of life for only western societies perhaps she ought to visit a few eastern societies (not all ). Because i can assure you we do not have a monopoly on racism or other forms of discrimination. Us vs Them issues are alive an well in many places all over the globe. Some places do not have any intention of working on it either. I will be VERY upset if here we ever completely stop focusing on equality/inequality. Because at least we have hope of moving forward if we are willing to recognize inequality and call it out and fight for equality.

Racism sucks. I am sorry your son had to deal with it.
Due to the country's current political climate, I imagine that conservatives may be a bit sensitive to be assumed racist. By the same token, minorities, etc. are on edge because racists are in the forefront. Marching in our streets and threatening the future of our country.
That guy was probably just an ass. It was definitely wrong, what he did. But don't allow anything to bring you down to that level. Don't perpetuate the race problem and respond pointing blame at others when blame only lies with this specific asshole.

ETA I should make it crystal clear that I'm not calling you fat, I've never seen you and don't care what size you are. But I do remember your comments on the issue so that's the comparison I used. Since you're throwing around how fragile people are when they're insulted.

Unpleasant and/or hurtful interactions with strangers are upsetting. We've all been there---it stings for a few days and then inevitably it's forgotten. A little perspective can go a long way here. I hope your son will quickly put it behind him and not turn it into an example of how "white=racist" and "the world has gone mad". That's a bit hyperbolic, in my opinion.

It's hard to not take a remark like that personally but not everyone is looking for positive interactions with others.
