Ssssoooooo.....
I've been scrapbooking since the early/mid 90s. The majority of my books are minis. The largest being either 6x8 or 8x8.
I once did an 8.5x11. It was for a friend and she requested that specific size.
I'm about to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip with my husband and our family. I know I'll take roughly 864 million photos. I'll also save every bit of,every piece of memorabilia/ephemera that I can get my hot little hands on.
When scrapbooking the trip I want everything in a single album...if possible. So I've purchased a "deep" 12x12 album. I plan on doing a mixture of traditional and PL scraping.
I'm skeered.lol This album is HUGE. Huge, like my first apartment wasn't this big. Am I really going to fill this up?
Any advice? Those of you who scrap this size where should I start? Any suggestions for such a large album?
Any and all advice welcomed. 😃 I'll be checking throughout the day. Thanks, Kat

Lots of white space is very trendy so you can start with a 12x12 white cardstock and make it like you would an 8x8, but centered or shoved in a corner.

With that many photos and a once-in-a-lifetime trip, you'll probably fill 2 albums!
Even if you don't quite fill it up, I don't see it as a problem.
You could start planning it out now. Figure out how many days you will have to scrapbook and/or places you are going. How many pages can you allocate for each, plus memorabilia?

I think when you sit down to work with all those pictures, ephemera and memories it will all come together on the page. Plus there are so many resources online like sketches and videos that can help you get started. Have an amazing trip!

You wont have any problems! Ive gone back and forth between 12x12 and 8.5x11, I actually think 12x12 is easier when you have a lot of pics to scrap.
Like ellewood said, white space is popular right now!

Trips are the only thing I scrap 12x12. I never know how many pages I will end up with. I start with a 3 ring album and pick my permanent album after I'm finished.
Would love to hear more or see this huge album. I might need one.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll have to try the white space thing. Also once we return and I start the album it might be easier than I think. Once I have actual pics and stuff to scrap.lol

I always start by purchasing WAY too much travel pp and embellishment packs/stickers, but a few are good to have.
I would recommend you pick up some large envelopes (say 9x12") and 3 hole punch them. Take them with you on vacation, and each day or each stop along the way, tuck the ticket stubs, maps, brochures, postcards, etc into an envelope and date it. If you have a journal, write each day on only one side of the paper. Date that and tuck it into that day's envelope.
When you do your scrapbook, you can use the envelopes (with some ephemera still tucked inside) for dividers. You can glue your journaling to the outside of the envelope, or attach it to a page. Ephemera can stay where it is or become clusters or mats for your photos, or page titles.
Don't forget to take photos of signs. And clocks. And newspaper front pages or any other way to show date and time.
Have a wonderful trip!

If you're taking a ton of photos, 12x12 is the only way to go. Do you use sketches? Scrapbook Generation has a travel sketch book that will help you when you go to assemble. Vacation albums can be daunting. grammadee has a great idea about the memorabilia gathering. You might also start thinking about paper to use. Vacation are amazing. Scrapping the memories can be just as amazing. Have an amazing trip!!!

Start researching vacation pages now. Might give you ideas of types of photos to take, memories to write down, etc. Also, might want to check out local scrapbook stores where you go.bI have found they often have papers or laser cuts or embellishments made for local attractions.

I was also going to suggest taking along a journaling notebook with folders or pockets for the memorabilia, similar to what grammadee suggested. For me, just keeping notes on what-we-did-when (and other details) really helps a lot once I finally sit down with the printed photos ready to scrap. I do all my travel SB pages in 12x12 and I can't imagine doing them any other way - there are always soooo many pictures, LOL! I second what others have said about looking through sketches to get ideas on how to start with 12x12. Or take a stroll through Pinterest or the gallery to look at travel LOs for ideas. Have a great trip!

You could scrap one or two photos you absolutely love on a regular 12x12 page; front and back. The photos related to that day, event, museum, etc.. can be put into divided sheet protectors. Becky Higgins has one that holds six, 4x6 vertical photos. You could slip a bunch in there and not do any journaling if it's included on the 12x12 page. Or keep it simple by only using one design of divided sheet protectors. This is the system I do for my family album (different divided sheet protectors) and maybe this could work for your vacation.
If you have a diecut machine, I have the Project Life 4x6 and 3x4 die set. Great way to use up scraps of paper. No, not necessary, but it makes the process even faster. I also have issues cutting straight lines. Also, once you come back you could look into Project Life core kits or journal cards from other companies that will coordinate with your photos.

Some really great suggestions. I like the fact that you're going to use some PL pages. I had taken a trip and had about 250 photos which just sat in a box for years. It was just too overwhelming for me to even think about doing that many layouts. Then when PL first started selling their kits on HSN I bought one and it made it so much easier to do some of my pages that way.
Enjoy your trip!

Although exclusively a traditional 12x12 scrapper, I insert various sized divided page protectors for extra photos, memorabilia, &/or journaling in my albums. I only scrap the photos/memoriabilia that support the story/stories I want to tell from any event, then slide everything else I want to keep in appropriate size/configured page protectors between or following the 1+ page layouts.
Hope you have a safe & fun trip!

Thank you all. These are great suggestions!
I'm excited to do this album...haven't gone on the trip yet tho.lol I think I'm just a little overwhelmed as I've not done 12x12 previously. And did I mention 12x12 is huge? Cause it looks ginormous. ☺
I'm going to watch some YouTube videos and look at some sketches. I'm also intrigued by using the white space.
I'll take a notebook with pockets. I'll journal every day and try to keep everything organized.
Not sure if there will be any LSS but I'll check online. If there are, I'll be checking them out for sure.
Again thank you all. I'm feeling much better about trying such a big album after all your advice.
Peas are awesome. 😀❤

Hope you have a safe & fun trip! This is exactly what I do, and I cannot recommend this strategy enough. When one has lots of photos it is a great way to incorporate them into the album while still giving the freedom to do lots of beautiful 12 x 12 layouts with the special photos. I also use 6x8 and 8x8 page protectors in the albums for smaller details and stories I want to tell...I think it makes for a lovely interactive album. SaveSave

I would plan for 25-30 double page spreads (or singles if you roll that way). I would also plan to add a PL page protector every few pages for maximum pictures. Next write down 20+ titles for pages. Sometimes I just write Beach 1, Beach 2 and Beach 3 if I am not sure of a title. Put each one on a separate piece of paper. I cut my printer paper in half for this. Then I look for sketches for some of the pages and add them to the 1/2 pieces of paper. Make sure that you take pictures in both horizontal and vertical formats to they can work with any layout. On your trip, bring several large 12 x 12 baggies to store memorabilia and take notes each night of where you went, what you did, and other important things. Put your notes in a baggie with the corresponding memorabilia. Also (and this is a must!), take pictures of signs/names of the places you go. They don't always have to go on pages, but are nice to have when a title for a page isn't coming. When you get back from your trip, print out index prints of your photos. I number my index prints (with tiny strips of sticky paper) and then start planning which pictures go on each page. I will write the picture number on the planner page for each layout. Sometimes I order a few more than I need. They are fun to cut out as titles for first page or last page. then I take my index prints to Sam's and sit down for 90 minutes and order my pictures in wallets, 4 x 6, 5 x 7, and one or two 8 x 10's. When I get my pictures, I lay out the planning page for each layout and start placing the pictures, journal info, and memorabilia into the 20-25 piles. I put each pile into its own 12 x 12 baggie and then take a breath. Then the fun of choosing the actual paper and embellishments begins. I did all of the planning for my last trip in June and got 100 pages done in July and August. If you plan it all out, it is really pretty stress free. My friends all laugh at my organizational process, but it works!
I have done 4-inch thick vacation books, and yes, they are huge. I combined seven trips that we took with our boys to Vegas in the book. It has them as young as six and as old as 16. Love that all of the years are in one album.

Ok, I want to know about this trip!!! Where are you going? You sound so excited. My husband and I spent a month in Alaska and I am about half way through scrapping the trip and I am on my second 12x12 3 ring album. I think I can finish it up in one more album. I've been working on it on/off for THREE years!

I had always been an 8.5x11 scrapper but after our trip to WDW took 2 albums I've switched over to 12x12. I love photo heavy pages and plan to incorporate PL pages as well.

Since it's a travel album perhaps think of a formula design that you follow through out, the variation in places will keep it interesting and cohesive. That strategy helps keep me from being overwhelmed so I can get it completed...

My last Disney album, I did two page layouts, with a co-ordinating pocket page protector between each page. I was able to showcase more photos and memorabilia.

I went on a week long river cruise to Austria and Germany. I had a large D ring 12x12. It ended up I could only fit Austria in that album. I got a second one for Germany. I had lots of memorabilia in it as well.
One suggestion I have is to print some of your pictures 2x3 - put 2 prints on one 4x6. Then you won't be filling up pages with things that are a bit less important than others.
My books do the trip in chronological order, so it starts and ends with the airport.

I am so excited for you!!! I love to scrapbook and make journals and mini albums, so just have fun with it. I agree with many of the suggestions above about documenting along the way. I made a journal/smash book while I was on a week long trip. I documented along the way as well as had a clear pouch for each day to put my memorabilia in for each day, which helped tremendously. Here is a video I did on putting the book together as well as some tips I used for keeping my travel memorabilia organized www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzZ2K0uGJdgEnjoy your trip

You guys are great. 😀 Thanks for your advice.
I'm not so much worried about the vacation aspect of the album as I am the size. lol I've never done a 12x12 and it just looks enormous.
After reading your posts I have a plan. I'm going to watch some YouTube videos and look at some sketches. I'm sure they'll inspire me.
I'm going to do a couple layouts that leave the white space....or try this technique anyway.lol
I'm also doing PL style pages as well. Those should be easy....pictures,some small embellishments and journaling cards. I have a variety of page and pocket sizes.
I'm also going to use some envelopes for memorabilia. I'm thinking I can print a photo on cardstock and then turn it into an envelope for some of the smaller things....so pic and envelope/memorabilia all in one.
I think that once we return and I start the album I won't feel so overwhelmed by it's size. I hope anyway. I do feel less anxious about it after reading everyone's advice.
Thank you all again. I appreciate the advice and all your suggestions. Kat
Oh PS for the pea who asked...it's a trip to Southeast Asia. Vietnam and Cambodia will be the main parts of the trip. My BIL is going for business so it will be me,DH,my sister and her DH.

If you have a journal, write each day on only one side of the paper. Date that and tuck it into that day's envelope. I did this (sort of) when we went to Hawaii-- I had 9x12 manila envelopes and labeled them as we went along to the different islands. I tossed any maps, brochures, ticket stubs, etc. into them. We started journaling every day in a steno notebook; that lasted about 5 days out of the trip, lol. But what we DID write was still helpful in doing journaling! Personally, I think 12x12 is a lot easier than small pages, especially for travel photos, like other people have said. I just like the amount of 'real' estate available, and my brain works better in the *square* format than 8x5 x 11, since most of my photos are taken landscape orientation and printed at 4x6. 12x12 also gives you space to do some layouts with larger photos, espeically if you print those in landscape orientation, too. My 2-week trip is already two 12x12 albums (that includes some pocket pages as well as traditional), and I also want to make a mini album for *random* stuff... basically, I take a lot of photos, loL! eta: you can definitely work the 'white' space idea into the arrangement of your album- make your best photos into one-two photos spreads with lots of white space, or make those pages your 'intro' pages to the different sections of your album, etc.

I LOVE 12x12 scrapbooking! It allows great space for photos, a little journaling if I want, and embellishments. I often include pages of paper souvenirs such as postcards, receipts, and even dinner menus or printed programs in my travel books. I like to stamp on my 12x12 papers too. Have fun!
