I have the most wonderful colleague at work. He and another colleague are skilled amateur photographers. They are really, really good and have done pictures for our large corporation. They are kind and sweet and offered to take my twin girls' senior pictures for free. They were very insistent about that. I would LOVE for them to take my girls' pictures; they will do an outstanding job. They're going to take the pictures and give me a CD.
Of course, I am going to pay them. I have to print the pictures myself, but I honestly just don't know how much is a fair amount to pay them. They don't do this for money otherwise, but I know they could both use the money.
I imagine it will be about a 2-hour shoot and then getting the pictures together, which I am sure is very time-consuming. Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

The sitting fee for our senior last year was $150 and that was a sale price because we booked early. I think the session was an hour.

I'm going to be there with them as they photograph my girls, but I'm pretty sure neither one of the guys would be interested in them I have seen their portfolio and it is incredible. Just incredible. So different and interesting. Not the same old boring stuff. I cannot imagine I wouldn't be thrilled. I think they'll be doing the editing. I will definitely confirm that, but it was my understanding they would. I was thinking $400. Is that way off base?

With the proofing of the photos.... definitely $400...at least. My first post listed just the sitting fee. To put it in perspective we spent right around $1100. DH about choked especially since where he went to high school they didn't do senior photos but we only have one child and the photographer we used was incredible. I was familiar with his work and knew we were going to use him when the time came. Here's one of our favorites

I think 400 is fine. Generous, even.

iowa57 - LOVE that picture. Most of ours are going to be outdoors, and my colleague has some incredible ideas for both of them together (they are polar opposites).

If they are insisting they'll do it for free, they are likely to be uncomfortable taking $400. I think it'd actually be ok if you took him up on his nice offer and get him a gift card someplace afterward.

We had outdoor photos too...and another favorite is one of the outdoor poses. Since you have girls it will probably take a bit longer, not only because of there being two but wardrobe changes.... we only did three shirt changes.

My DD used a friend who had just graduated high school and was starting her own photography business. She charged us $150 for the sitting, editing on a few favorites, and all pics on a CD. That said, if they are offering to do this for free, I might be inclined to pay in the form of a gift card to an extravagant restaurant, hotel, or camera shop.

That is an awesome senior pic!
Senior pictures have really changed around here in the last few years. So many "photographers" now. I remember when I was in HS - there was one, and everyone's pictures looked exactly the same!LOL
What is happening now is that everyone is starting to do their own. I even saw one kids senior pics that were taken with his Mom's iPhone. They were FANTASTIC!

When you get the CD, or whatever, you might want to be sure you get a release of some sort from them to avoid any issues when you're doing the printing. Unless you're printing at home.

That would be about a $700 gift from me. Each.

We are having my son's taken by the photographer who did their prom pictures that I loved. They were outside in the mountains. His fee is $75, which I think is too low. Cute baby, Ellen.

I think we paid $150 for an indoor shoot the past spring for DD. A location shoot was more - maybe $250. Then you could order prints individually or as a package deal. I bought our photographer's middle range package, and I think it was somewhere around the $1200 mark. We narrowed down all the images to about 39 the day of the shoot, then have files of all of those and a video they did with those same images. We ended up with a really nice variety of poses, outfits, etc.
For as much work as I know they did (husband/wife team), if they had done it for free, I would definitely want to give them something in the $300-$400 range.

My dd grad'd last yr. We paid 150$ for the 1 hr sitting fee. Then when we ordered prints I think she got a % of the print money, as she ordered them from her own special high quality lab. If you are doing all the printing I think 150-200$ would be about right. 400 for just the sitting fee sounds like a lot. I would NEVER EVER spend 1100 on Sr pictures. Yi. Dd's were a mix of outdoor and indoor. They were done very well.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk The most expensive part is the professional processing of the prints.....they weren't sent to Walgreens, Shutterfly or any of those type of photo processing and yes, there is a difference. We had several large prints done and those were super expensive in the finish and format we ordered. We were thrilled with what we paid for and I know people who have spent more than that.....yikes!

I think $400 is about right for two girls. As someone else suggested, I would give them gift cards since they have offered to do it for free. They might be hurt if they wanted to give you this special gift, and you insist on paying them for their services. A gift card just seems more like a thank you gift.

For what you have said, around here that would have a retail value of around $500-$700 per child. They are offering to do it for free, likely for a variety of reasons, whatever you choose to give them will be very generous and I'm sure will make them feel very appreciated.

It occurs to me that they may want the photos to be part of their portfolio (part of why they will do it for free) so just be sure you and the girls are cool with that if that's what they are going to do. You probably are, but I just wanted to throw that out there in case you hadn't considered it.

Sorry, I was so busy having my shizz bugged that I forgot to answer the OP....
I would have said that $200 is reasonable for someone who is insistent about not taking money, and seeing there are 2 of them then I guess $400 would be generous.

I think $400 is generous but might make them uncomfortable to take after offering free if they are sincere. I agree with others, gift card to photo supply store or restaurant if you know what they like. Bit of a hi-jack. My senior this year DD is a bit more practical than me and a "knows what she wants" type of kid. When we were in Door Co this summer, before she had to head home early for work, she asked to stop at her favorite place in DC - Cave Point County Park (and one of her favorite places on earth, she says!). Anyway, she asked me to take some photos of her which I did. She is insistent on using one of them for her senior pic. She loves to edit/fool with photos, so she is going to use her skills to "upgrade" my photo. I am so flattered that she wants to use mine. Love that girl. Hope she doesn't regret it in the future. She probably won't though. She hates spending money on what she deems unimportant to her. Did I mention though, that she is saving to go to Fla. to visit "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" before she has to start college?? Priorities, priorities, priorities!

I agree that $400 sounds fair for someone that you know and is willing to do them for free. but I have to agree with the others, You might be better off getting him a gift card someplace, as he might argue about taking your money!
Last year we paid right around $800 for our DS senior pics. He had an hr in studio and about an hr outside. This price included some prints from the studio and a CD to print what I wanted. A few images were touched up and it was up to me to do the rest. The ones that the studio printed were ones I choose for myself and then had all of the families printed elsewhere.... I would HIGHLY recommend getting your photos printed at Mpix.com Their prints are reasonably priced, they have FANTASTIC customer service, the photos come so nicely packaged.... I even ordered DS grad party invites from them. We live fairly close to Mpix ( in KS, about 2 hrs away) and when I order from them, I seriously have my order in 2 days. From the time I push complete my order, Until they are at my door! So if you will be needing lots of prints, You should check them out!
