Okay, so I haven't scrapped in a few years but was hoping to get going again this year. I want something quicker, easier and smaller than a bulky 12x12 album. What would ya'll recommend, that I can actually find page protectors for? I don't want to pick a size I like and then face the frustration of not being able to find supplies. I'm def. wanting to go more Project Life style vs. just a straight up cardstock background. I have used 9x12 once and I actually don’t find it any less bulky than 12x12. The page protectors are a nice configuration but that’s where it stops for me. As an international the albums and pp’s are so expensive to ship. So for my next big album (honeymoon) I’ve decided to do 12x12 as it’s much more convenient. I use 6x8 for everything else and I love it, only downside is I do have 4 6x8 albums for 2018.

Thanks for the size advice, guys! What about 6x12? Looking at the page protectors, I'm intrigued...it'd be nice to have some pages of just photos, where I have a lot of pics and little to say. But even though I see the protectors on Ali's site, I don't see any albums that size. Are they hard to find, and if not, where can I look? I'm really out of the loop...lol.

So, if I really wanted to switch to 9x12 I would just create my own albums by cutting down 12x12 albums and finishing off the ends. That way I could use regular 12x12 page protectors that I also cut down. The waste would be worth the convenience and I assume 12x12 pp don’t cost more and are readily available everywhere. I buy them on deep discount at Tuesday Morning often. Aren’t 9x12 four hole? So now you’re stuck in the Inked loop for randomly available supplies.

I'm thinking I might do 6X12 for 2019 but I'm still not sure it will be big enough. As far as the page protectors being on Ali's site and not the 6X12 albums, remember Ali is in bed with Studio Calico and studio Calico has the 6X12 albums. That said, I've done 9X12 for several years and I've love the design A 6X12 page protector mixed in with my 9X12 pages.

Okay, good to know that 6x12 might be problematic. Exactly the kind of thing I don't want to run into, lol!

Okay, good to know that 6x12 might be problematic. Exactly the kind of thing I don't want to run into, lol! 12x12 and 6x8 are the only sizes that fit the standard pocket pages and are readily available across various brands. 9x12 and 6x12 are really only available via Inked--which includes Studio Calico/Ali Edwards--so there is no guarantee they will always be in stock/have page protectors in stock.
I think it really depends a lot on your style and what you plan to include in your album. For me, I complete two 12x12 pocket pages per year with one spread per week. Any smaller wouldn't work for me, in fact, I tend to have trouble keeping it into 2 albums per year. I also enjoy having a mix of page protector sizes in the album and that works really well with the 12x12 because all the other pocket pages are smaller and fit easily in the album (sometimes I need to repunch holes). 6x8 is probably easier if you're new to the style and don't have a ton to document--definitely less intimidating.
You also should likely consider consistency across the years before you pick a size. For me, I use white faux leather 12x12 albums each year and my album match on my shelf. I stick to this size and color because I know I will be able to find it in the future. If, instead, you don't care about switching it up between years then you probably have more freedom to pick a rarer size that might not necessarily be sold in the future.
If you do decide to go with 9x12 or 6x12 I would recommend buying all of the albums you'll need for the year upfront, just in case they stop stocking them in the color you're using (or size all together). As far as page protectors go--you can find 6x12 page protectors from other brands, such as BH, but the holes won't line up. You could always repunch the holes (I do this frequently to put the 9x12 pages into my 12x12 albums) and still use these pages, so if you can't find the 6x12 pages that match your album you at least have a back up. I don't think any other brands make 9x12 page protectors, but you can also cut down 12x12 page protectors and use a fuse/sew it up on the edge (if needed) and repunch the holes.
I do create 9x12 albums for other layouts/projects and just stock up on the page protectors when they are in stock and I've never had a problem where I ran out and couldn't get them. Ultimately, I think you'll be fine with whatever size you choose to use as long as you stock up when supplies are available. But, I do think there is always a risk that the 6x12 or 9x12 could be discontinued in the future so if you care about continuity of albums over the years you probably should opt for 12x12 or 6x8.

lasteve1- thank you so much! That was really helpful, and gives me lots of food for thought. I scrapped in 12x12 for years before switching to 8.5x11 as my main size, but it's been a long time since I really kept up with anything. I mean, my daughter is 5 and I don't think I've done anything since she was born, lol.
But I've kept scores and scores of journals- funny things the kids said, conversations we've had, memories we've made. I just haven't put photos with them, lol. I was always better about the story aspect than I was at the photo and scrapbooking part. So many stories to tell, and often I didn't have photos or the "right" embellishments to go with the story. So I figured I'd just start where I am and get some photos into actual books, even if I keep doing more long-winded storytelling in my journals vs. the scrapbooks.
I hate that my daughter doesn't even have a baby book, whereas I painstakingly documented about 10 years of my son's life. (Daughter is 5, son is 16!)

So Ali's been sending out a weekly Monday message for the OLW class. It's something new and I'm really enjoying it. She also has a video of what she's doing with the OLW journal even though I thought she wasn't going to use it. I know it's early in the year but she seems more engaged and I'm liking it.

Current story subscribers... is Ali still doing only PL spreads and 6x8 pages during her story kit/stamp class videos? Part of the reason I canceled my sub was due to her not creating 12x12 pages. I view her classroom each month as part of the value of the kits and two or three 5 minute videos only featuring 6x8 and PL layouts weren't for me.

This month, she did a 3x8 page, a 2pg 9x12 a 2 pg 6x8 and her PL spread from last year (12x12 size). I have not seen a lot of 12x12 regular l/o in recent memory. I scrap 8.5x11 so she almost never creates my exact size, but I understand where you are coming from.

teacherlisa thank you! The 9x12 pages are pretty close to 12x12. I guess I should have asked if she's creating bigger pages than 6x8. For quite a few months in a row (maybe even a year?) she created either 0 or 1 12x12 pages each month and the rest of her pages were 6x8 or PL. I don't mind an occasional 6x8 page but design ideas are hard to translate from 6x8 to 12x12. The page sizes are too dissimilar.

The dividers intrigue me. I'm a fan of the 3x8 size. But at that price, it better have a ton of protectors. Which I doubt. I'd bet most of that cost is those dividers. I won't be rushing to buy this one that's for sure.

I don’t understand bundling 15 transparent dividers together for two days of documenting. I’m guessing one for each hour (12) and one each for morning, afternoon, night (3) =15. When I first read it, I was thinking it was the album plus 15 pocket protectors, and calling that a “bundle” for $38 was ridiculous. But, I wish the album and transparent dividers weren’t bundled. Pricey.

Totally weird and unrelated question: Amy Gretchen on AE’s design team... is Gretchen her married name? Or is she going by her first + middle? Just wondering since two first names is always an odd combo.

Also that would force you to put your photos and journaling for the hour back to back. But, idk that 12 hours is enough for the day? Aren’t most people awake for longer than that!? Like if you get up 7, you’re not in bed by 7 (unless you’re one year old). So when I first read your math I thought you were onto something, I’m not sure that breakdown makes sense. Although 15 doesn’t seem to make sense any way I can think of it either.

I’m pretty sure Gretchen is her middle name because I’ve seen her put their last initial on stuff but can’t remember what it was, but it wasn’t G. My guess is she just doesn’t want to share her last name publicly for privacy reasons.

I'm waiting to see what it will look like, but for a project to go from $20 (two DITL kits) to $63, I'll probably just recreate what I can and play along without the product. Unless it's too good to resist!

I think Ali doing DITL this way is really narrow minded. Basically if you don’t want to document your day hourly or by morning/evening/afternoon it sounds like her kit would be a waste. Having just one album makes sense, I guess, but it doesn’t sound like there is much room with the kit for variation on how it’s documented.

Seems to me it's a way to make it a bigger thing/profit generator. I mean, you don't need a separate album to document a day. But if you do it hourly, you need more pockets, and even dividers, right? Ca-ching! Inked is smart.
