I decided to do a 36 hour fast. Then, I did the math and knew that I'd probably hit 41 before I could eat. I'm now at 43 and trying to decide if I should just go for it and try to hit 72. I don't feel super hungry, I'm a little bit hungry but my stomach only growled a little last night. I'm getting a bit of a headache. I keep reading that the first 48 is the worst and then it's easy. I'm kind of at a "let's see what happens" stage.
Anyone done a 72 hour? Was it ok at 48? If I do 48 I can have dinner tonight. If I do 72 I won't eat until tomorrow night.
UPDATE: I've decided to just go for it. At work is the hardest because I have a long stretch of being potentially undistracted from hunger. I'm at 50 hours now. I took some advil which was probably not the thing to do but the headache was getting to me. Had a shoot so totally forgot I was hungry and now I'm doing fine. Only slightly hungry. I feel different. I feel "floaty". I can't describe it otherwise.
UPDATE again: 64 hours in. No longer hungry. Still feel kinda floaty but it's not bad. Weak and a little shaky. I could keep going but I'm going to stop at 72.

I haven't gone long than about 36 before..but I know that the first 2-3 days are the hardest, and that after you get over that initial hump your hunger pretty much goes away. Go for as long as you want, its not bad for you. Watch out for the 'clean out' phase..stay close to a rest room! Good luck! I haven't decided if I'm going to try an extended fast or not yet, for the sole reason that I'm worried about hair loss, I shed really easy. Go you!

I did a 72 hour last month. I had already been fasting once a week for 41 hours each time. I really had no problem doing the 72 hour. Drink lots of water! I actually enjoy not having to think about food for a while. I would love to do another long fast, but I am trying to improve my muscle mass right now. I lost about 4 pounds of muscle during my last weight loss challenge, so trying to build it back up.

Stupid question, but are you talking about actually not eating for that long? I pass out if I don't eat.

I suggest listening to your body. When you are stressed (like you would be if you are hungry) then that turns on hormones that make it harder to lose weight. So if your body is ok then keep going. BUT if you can tell that you are beginning to stress about it, I would just eat.

What is the purpose of not eating for three days? True fasting is actually very good for your body. We were designed/built for a life of fasting and then feasting. It kicks up growth hormones, healing, etc. If you are really curious, go to YouTube and look up Dr. Jason Fung, he literally wrote the book. All kinds of medical doctors are on board with this. I'm with Kaiser health insurance and all my doctors are on board with Intermittant Fasting, and recommend it.

I have done a couple 72 hour fasts and one 84. The first 2 to 3 days are definitely the worst, I get a headache each time right around 48 hours. By the end of my 84 hour fast I was feeling awesome. I probably should've kept going because I wasn't even hungry anymore.
I'm considering trying a seven day fast next month.

With all due respect, I wouldn't be fine. That's why I was making sure I was understanding what the o/p said correctly, and hadn't missed a thread about some sort of cleanse etc. I'm sure there are plenty of people who can accomplish it with no problem, but I'm not one of them. Carry on...

It's because every time you eat anything, insulin is released. And insulin makes you hungry. So the more often you eat, the more often insulin is released and the hungrier you get.

I'm with flute4peace. I have real issues with blood sugar and can't do a long fast. I tried it as a teenager and ended up in the ER when my blood sugar got too low. Hey, if it works for you, that's great. I'm sure there are health benefits.

There most certainly are people who will pass out if they don't eat. Diabetics are one example.
Maybe it's just that I have zero willpower and could never do it deliberately myself, but I don't buy the benefits of fasting. A quick google search shows plenty of articles and evidence that show the dangers of fasting. I do envy the willpower though.
I wonder if some magnesium along with water would help the fasting headaches? I suspect electrolytes are what the body is craving, but I know that magnesium can help with early migraines. Just a thought.

There are some people with insulin resistance who will find their blood sugar goes up with extended fasting. It's an interesting phenomenon that doesn't happen to everyone, but it does to me. My fasting blood glucose is always elevated but it can be normal in the middle of the day after I've had a meal. When I'm fasting my liver (well, everyone's, but mine kicks into overdrive) is stimulated to release glucose (I'm putting this as simply as possible because who cares about all the terms). My DD has the same reaction. My blood sugar is never low no matter how many hours it's been since I've eaten.
So I'm actually better off with small meals, but I don't like to eat small meals. And I don't like to skip meals. I just plain like eating. I end up fasting for longer than I should and then wolfing down food.

But, I feel better than I have in years. I believe the fasting has played a major part in that, yes.

She didn't give out medical info but she also didn't say "I would probably pass out..." or "I think I would pass out..." or anything that indicated that she was speculating. She said "I pass out...". To me that clearly indicates that this is something that happens to her. It was present tense, not future. A fact, not a guess. Save

I was on my phone and having a hard time posting and was just curious about the o/p, since I've always been taught the opposite (several small meals to keep blood sugar steady), and had only heard of fasting for religious reasons. i.e. was asking a question about gasting, since it was a thread about fasting I'm glad to hear that it does have health benefits for some.

I'm fasting for health, weight loss potential and exploring religious reasons. I'm Christian, it's not commanded but it was common in the bible. I've been reading a lot about religious fasting so I just wanted to see if I would experience anything different or mind altering. I'm an adventurer.

I like intermittent fasting. I definitely believe in the health benefits of fasting. But hair loss is a thing. I watched a friend from high school do what I believe was a religious fast. Now, she fasted A LOT longer. I think she was going for 30 days. After her fast was over she lost all of her pure black hair and it grew in completely grey! She is around 45 years old. I will never be able to do a long fast after seeing that. Too vain I guess!

Is it just for weight lose? I guess if you could do it more power to you! I could not. I schedule blood pokes or procedures in the am always! I usually have a migrane that follows if it's more than overnight. Although I will say I agree on the 'cleaning out part'. that does seem to happen.

Are you fasting from food only or water also? Are you eating/drinking anything at all or nothing? I would think you would at least need water.
