You bought something on Amazon. Now, you don't actually want it (perhaps you bought it at 3 am while up with the baby or insomnia—no judgement, we've all been there). Now you have to return it. In the grand scheme of online returns, Amazon makes it relatively painless, but now you'll have an additional option that doesn't require finding your nearest UPS store.
Just head to Kohl's, and they'll handle it for you. Yes, the strip mall staple will take your opened Amazon packages and return them for you—for free—without you having to print a label, tape a box shut, or check your nearest UPS location's hours.
The retailer announced today that 82 Kohl's locations will begin accepting Amazon returns starting in October. The program will be first tested at Los Angeles and Chicago area stores.
"We are thrilled to launch this unprecedented and innovative concept, allowing customers to bring in their unpackaged Amazon returns to Kohl's and we will pack them, ship them, and return them to Amazon for free," said Richard Schepp, Kohl's Chief Administrative Officer.
If that's not convenient enough, if you're running in to make an Amazon return, there will also be dedicated parking spaces near the entrance just to expedite the process.
This news comes after Kohl's announced that an Amazon smart home experience will be available in ten of its stores across the Chicago and Los Angeles areas starting in October, and these stores "will have Amazon returns integrated into the overall Amazon experience, located prominently at the front of the store," according to a press release.
Since Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods was finalized back in August, it is expected that the organic grocery chain will similarly become a return center for Amazon purchases, though no date for that perk has been announced.

I think this is brilliant for Kohls and Amazon.

Kohl's? No thank you. Their customer service area is at the way way back of the store and painfully slow. I'd rather go to UPS or post office, both of which are easy in/easy out.

Our Kohls recently remodeled and moved customer service from the back to the very front of the store. I've done site to store pickup, and they have dedicated parking right up front, I was able to walk in get one I needed and be out in less than 10 minutes. Perhaps they'll do more remodeling on other stores to make it company- wide?

In the UK, you can return your Amazon parcels at a network of small, local convenience stores. On the Amazon site, you put in your postcode and it tells you which stores are available. There are 4 or 5 within a mile of my house. It is extremely convenient!

I wonder if the Kohl's returns will include items that Amazon doesn't offer free return shipping on? If so, this will be a great addition to their return policy.

Well.... I got all excited until Kohl's was mentioned. I can't even. Not even to return my midnight insomnia drug-induced stupor purchases. I'll take my chances at the Office Depot

Our Staples takes UPS packages and the line is never more than one person long when I walk in. It's close to my house and super fast and easy. I've never had a good experience with Kohl's service desk. I think ours is still hidden in the back of the store, also.

That sounds insane. I don't even like going there when I pick up Kohls order online pick up in store merchandise because they're awfully slow. I went to pick things up in April and while they said my order was ready I swear the girl went around the store filling my order when I came to pick it up because it took so long and it wasn't bagged up, she had it in her arms walking in. I can't imagine them trying to coordinate things that need to be returned that don't belong to their store along with the things that they do have. What a nightmare.

I am not quite sure why printing a label and sending something back isn't far easier than going to Kohl's??

I am not quite sure why printing a label and sending something back isn't far easier than going to Kohl's?? Well, for Amazon's free returns, you can print out a label but you still have to take it to a UPS dropoff point. I can imagine that there are places where Kohl's is more convenient... but not here. The UPS store is much closer, open before I go to work, and never busy.

Well, since I don't have a Kohl's anywhere near me I guess I'll still go to the UPS store. Although if I had a Kohl's store near me I'd still rather do UPS I think, instead of having to stand in line at Kohl's. Target's customer service line, for example, is always backed up. At the UPS store, which is 5 minutes from my house, I just run in, toss the box in their direction, say thank you, and run out. lol

But to activate a return you only have to go on line and request that it be picked up. UPS comes and gets it. All you really have to do is tape up the box.

Since I've never returned anything to Amazon, but I don't mind going to Kohls, CS is up in front and they are pretty speedy. UPS would be fine too, they are just down the street.

It may be because we live in the Seattle area (Amazon HQ) but there are return lockers at every grocery and convenience store around here. You sign up for a return online and get a code. Go to the lockers, enter the pin, and an appropriate sized locker opens. Put your return in, and your refund is usually processed same day. Pretty convenient!

The UPS store and Kohls are both slow where I live. At least there's more options. The Kohls closest to me is not gross at all.

Mine is the same way, plus it is further away than UPS; however, if I don't have to pay the shipping it might make it worth it depending on the item. Usually I just make sure I'm really certain of what I want from Amazon. So offering a free return policy makes it more likely I'll take a chance on something like clothing that I normally wouldn't consider buying on Amazon.

While that is a good idea in theory, Kohl's puts their returns in the part of the store that is furthest away from the entrance. Mine put it upstairs and completely on the other side of the store. I could walk to the Post Office faster than it would take me to drive there, find a space and schlepp all the way up to the returns desk only to have to wait behind people who are arguing why they should be able to return something or why they are only getting so much back on an item when they paid some other amount. For big items that are costly to return, I would consider it but otherwise, probably not.

I shop in 2 Kohls primarily - in one it's in the back, in the other it's right inside the front door. One is also in the same shopping center as Target, so it's pretty convenient for me! It will be more convenient (for me) when they put lockers in Whole Foods though.

The nearest Kohl's is 5 miles away which in Houston is a minimum of 1/2 hour on a good day. I'll stick w/UPS or buyers remorse and keep whatever I bought.
