My son was over and he and I were down in the office printing some stuff off for him. DH came running into the office yelling at us to get out. He was on the phone with 911.
We live in a new neighbourhood, where houses are still being built. We're on a corner lot. Across the street from the side of our house is an empty lot, and the developer has just started on it. The guys were there, digging what will the basement, all day. We are one of the three houses closest to this lot.
And then they hit the main gas line. It was loud! And it smelled. We grabbed my purse, shoes, the dog and the dog's leash and ran out the back door. We were coughing because it was so strong. We ran a couple of blocks down the street.
Fire trucks came. Ambulance. Some police cars. They blocked off the street. They finally got it stopped and finally let us back in the house after the fireman checked the inside of our house, because when they first arrived, the readings in our yard were critical.
It still smells. And I'm still shaking. But apparently it's safe now to be back.

I'm glad everything is ok now. And that everyone was concerned about it. We had that happen in an empty lot across the street from us several years ago, and the construction people didn't seem bothered by it. Um...hello...gas...it smells bad for a reason! We left because of the sound and the smell and hoped our house would still be there when we got back a couple of hours later. Crazy!

That must have been terrifying. I am very glad there was no explosion, and you were able to return home.

We were talking to another builder who lives a few houses down from us. He told us this was a very small builder - and that they had not called the dial-before-you-dig people, or whatever they are called now, before digging.
It's been a couple of hours. The gas company people are still there. A second truck of them just showed up.

Yikes! I hope that builder has his license pulled. He just put numerous people’s lives in danger, not to mention cost the city a small fortune in emergency response costs.

The other builder we were talking to said it's a max $350,000 fine. A third gas company truck just arrived a few minutes ago. Not sure what's happening, because there are a bunch of them gathered outside there, in the dark, walking around the site.

Glad you are ok! You really should have your home checked for structural damage that may not be obvious. A friend of ours was in a situation like yours and a gas line was hit. The explosion caused foundation damage.

Oh shoot. Re-reading, it does sound like I'm saying it exploded. It didn't. The very loud noise was from, what I gather, is the highly pressurized natural gas line breaking and the gas all coming out. It came out so hard that it was flinging the surrounding dirt up in the air so it looked like a geyser. And it was surprisingly really loud.
The gas line was cut, the gas escaped, they shut the main gas line off for a few hours (it's back up now, and the gas company guys came into the houses in the area to make sure our furnaces, hot water tanks, fireplaces, etc. were all on again)
Fortunately, it did not explode. I think if it had, we probably wouldn't be here. It's that close. The ambulance was here and the paramedics asked us all how we felt and if we felt strange at all, they wanted to assess us. My family all felt ok, but they did assess a very pregnant woman a few doors down.
Sorry, that in my freak-out over this whole thing, I probably made it sound like it exploded.

I'm impressed that your husband was able to respond so quickly. Probably would have taken me a good while to figure out what was up. I am glad you are all safe.

The next city over, a city worker got tired of waiting for the utility company to confirm the dig line (they mark the spot with spray paint based on maps and then wait for utilities to confirm). He proceeded to dig through a gas line and a fiber optic line. The original call was for a water leak, which was lucky. They said without the water he would have taken out at least 20 houses (and himself). The 3 utilities fined the city, but he got to keep his job thanks to his union. I'm glad everyone is safe in your neighborhood.

My mama experienced a gas explosion in her younger years (nearby, unhurt, but scared) and has been leery about smelling gas ever since. I have several distinct memories as a child of her yanking me out of places that had an odor of natural gas.
Glad to hear you are safe and unhurt.

I'm so glad you're okay! That's some scary stuff! Not an hour ago I was driving by an area in Portland that had a similar situation with a construction crew occur earlier this year. They evacuated people from the area before an explosion occurred. It destroyed several businesses, but amazingly, no one was killed.
