I'm hosting a baby shower for a delightful couple and it is a library building shower. I have some favorite books for babies and toddlers and preschoolers but would love to hear about some of yours, especially newer titles. My kids are over 25...
Thanks!

I love Sandra Boynton....Barnyard Dance, Doggies, Pyjama Time...so many.... Blue Hat, Green Hat (I think I have the colors right) is a fave here. I remember DS, just barely 3, crawling into his 10 month old sister's crib and "reading" it to her and the giggling.

Today I heard about a book that's going on to my list for the grandkids. 101 Books to Read Before you Grow Up. It has a list of books and a journal where the kids can rate and comment on their favorite character, etc.

My kids loved "Goodnight Moon". I bet I could still recite it by heart and my kids are 18 and 14.
Also "Guess How much I love you"
"Are you my Mother"
and the one I read to them the longest was
"Albert's Halloween - The Case of the Stolen Pumpkins" This is for older kids probably 5 or 6.

I like any of the Anansi (the wise spider) books. The US version is Aunt Nancy. I like her too. She's very good at tricking "bad luck."
My favorite book growing up was Harvey's Hideout. Not sure if you can find that one.

I like to gift Dr. Seuss's ABCs. We had it with a tape that read along, and I still remember some of the rhymes.
I once asked a co-worker for a recommendation; her son like Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site. (I believe there is also a sequel book.) I don't think I ended up buying it, but how cute would that be with a little Tonka bulldozer or something similar?

Sorry not new ones but the Pokey Little Puppy was one of my favorite Golden books. One of my brother's favorite books was Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. My niece and nephew like the Froggy books by Jonathan London. There are so many great books out there these days it is hard to choose. I could give a huge list of them...but these just popped into my head.

Anything Mo Willems or Oliver Jeffers. Of course, I am not sure you can beat Dr. Seuss, but both of those boys are pretty great!
I love the Gruffalo by .Donaldson, and I also like books Lorena Baccalan-The Aminal, Humbug Witch, Sometimes Its Turkey-Sometimes Feathers.

My youngest daughter and I loved to read the books from the Pigeon series by Mo Willems - Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is the first in the series. He also wrote another favorite - Knuffle Bunny.

We have so many favorites! I like giving books that are one or two steps beyond the basic board books most little kids get. Some of my favorites that my 7 yo DD still loves are Harold and the Purple Crayon, Room on the Broom, The Day the Crayons Quit, The Day the Crayons Came Home, Green Eggs and Ham, Six by Seuss, Where the Wild Things Are, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. I'm sure there are more, that's just off the top of my head.

My granddaughter introduced me to Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type. It made me laugh while reading it to her. It about some cows that get a hold of a typewriter and use it to make demands of the farmer.
Another one I discovered recently is SkippyJon Jones. It's a lot of fun.
One that I loved reading to my now-adult children was The Spooky Old Tree by Jan and Stan Berenstain. I have different voices I do for different parts of the book. I think my kids can probably recite the whole book. I know I can.

Peter Hatches an Egg, was one of my DD's favorite books. Peter is a bunny who has an underground nest in a chicken yard where an egg rolls down into his home. He's so happy the chickens gave him an egg and loves his little egg, sleeping curled around it. Then it hatches and he's so proud of his baby chicken.

Time for Bed by Mem Fox is my favorite. I love the cadence and the gentle poetic words. Time for bed, little mouse, little mouse. Darkness is falling all over the house...
When DH was a squadron commander, we gave Jamberry by Bruce Degan as a gift to all new parents. That was his favorite book to read the kids.

I remember DS, just barely 3, crawling into his 10 month old sister's crib and "reading" it to her and the giggling. "Red Hat, blue Hat, green Hat, oops!" I thought the book was rather dull when I first picked it up, but then I read it to DS and he giggled with every page. That was the best!

I went to one of those showers earlier this year. I went to our used book store and found the most beautifully illustrated collection of stories. I don't remember the name of it but they had an interesting collection of books to choose from that I knew no one else would give her.

My favorite is one called "New Shoes" and sadly it is not in print - I wish it was as I would be getting it for my grandbaby. Have you tried searching on eBay? Sometimes you can find copies of out of print books there. My sister had a book of poems as a child that I loved but it was long out of print. A friend found a copy of it for me there when it was still half.com and gave it to me for my birthday. It's worth a shot!
