I'm wondering for all of you who say to just give it to the husband - has there ever been a special gift you've wanted to give your kids? I've had a few - not necessarily expensive - but sentimental gifts that I have given my children. The first time I went to Paris - way before we were planning children - I saw this beautiful little tea set with little pictures and french words on the cups. I bought it for my future daughter - despite it being ridiculously overpriced. When she was old enough, I dug it out of the basement and gave it to her for Christmas. There was no "comparable" gift for my son, although I'm sure there was another present under the tree for him. But I'm very sure it was neither as expensive nor sentimental. I'm trying to imagine my husband wrapping it up and giving it to ME, to play with our daughter on some notion that it is unfair to the other child. I'd think long and hard about your HUSBAND's feelings about this before going that route. He wants to give his son an electric train for Christmas - it really shouldn't be that complicated.

I wouldn't buy an expensive train set for such young children, odds are they won't appreciate it and may not even like it. I'd buy it for your husband as it sounds like something he wants. I definitely disagree with this. My good friend got a Lionel set when her son was 2 and he LOVED IT. And so did her husband. It was really cute to watch and an obvious bonding gift. It was made to take some liquid and put out 'steam' and I remember her son really liked that. Plus they are so well made they will last forever. I would get it as a whole family gift if I was op.
