Were we going to have one of these? Just a check in and how's everyone doing? Despite nearly giving myself a repetitive stress injury from hitting refresh on the news sites today, I have thus far managed to not eat my feelings and stay on track today, and for the past 3 days. Wondering how you all are doing?

I was good during the week but my kids came home for the weekend and we made lots of yummy fall meals. I didn’t overdo it but I definitely had more carbs than recommended. Since my goal is just to eat better less carbs, sugar and processed foods, I’m OK with that. Today I’m back on track and I don’t feel deprived since I had some treats over the weekend.

It’s slow! But as I posted on a different thread, the weight is coming off. Highly motivating to begin moving out of the plus sizes and into the regular sizes. I would do better if I could find more time to exercise ...

I'm discouraged!!! Having only "cheated" once in the past three weeks but I haven't lost a pound. It is a fantastic diet for my blood sugar, but so far not effective for weight loss. Chicken, salads, sugar free jello, eggs. I take several walks a day. Any suggestions?

Chicken, salads, sugar free jello, eggs. I take several walks a day. Any suggestions? Just keep going. Make sure you’re staying hydrated. So far all my weight has come off in “whooshes.” I lose nothing for a month and then get up one morning and the scale is down 4 lbs. Slow! But I find this much more sustainable than anything else I’ve tried (and I’ve tried everything) so I just keep at it. If you have an off day, just get back on the next day. You can do it!

If I don't track I can't seem to maintain any momentum at all, OR I discover I'm not quite in the range I imagined...over cals, over carbs, etc.

I've been trying to eat low(er) carb for the past few months. I've lost some weight but need to lose more. I like to cook, but in my household of 3 (me, DH and vegetarian DS) it's a challenge. DH loves all things gravy and fried and meat, lots of meat! DS wants yummy but meat free. So dinners are a challenge. I try to cook a main dish (usually low carb, meat item), fresh veggie(s), and then add a carb side for DH. For DS I try to make a similar main dish, but meat free of course (example: We have low carb chicken enchiladas and I will make black beans for DS, then rice for the two of them, salad for me). It's exhausting sometimes.
I follow a couple Keto groups on FB - they are good for some low carb recipes.
I miss cookies. And I haven't been brave enough to purchase the low carb sweeteners as I suspect I will not like the aftertaste.
Anyway, no point to my post other than joining in on the low carb conversation.

Thanks for the encouragement, Merge and missbennet. I'll try to increase my water intake. I've also vowed to weigh only every 6 weeks so I'm not tempted to throw in the towel.

Teri - I "think" I'm getting plenty of fat in my diet. Between the bacon, cheese, sausage, and mayo, it seems like everything I eat has fat. I've never counted grams - should I be?

I like the low carb sweeteners for baking. Swerve is good, as is Pyure. Even my kids will eat stuff made with these sweeteners. That said, I don’t make baked goods very often. Impulse control is not my strong suit.

I just had the weirdest meal...McDonalds Quarter Pounder with cheese, no buns, no onion and no ketchup. Oh, and a salad. I'm pretty good about bringing my lunch with me, but we had a storm run thru here last night and today, so working overtime and no place really to get a good low-carb dinner. It was good.
Since October is almost over, I am pleased to announce that I've lost a total of 15 pounds over the month! Whoot! I doubt November will see as big of a loss, but it was a great start! So I'm very happy right now and enjoyed that bunless burger!
Hope everyone has a great month!

Are you eating enough veggies? I don't know about keto but I find I do better (and feel better when I am eating a lot of veggies). And drinking water. I'm doing ok. I have not been eating perfectly (particularly today) but overall have been sticking to THM and doing 5:2. Today I was out and about for work and was so hungry and gave in to my McDonalds impulse. I have been so tired this afternoon. Probably a combo of not being able to sleep last night and the junk at lunch. I have soup in the crockpot so when I get home at 7:30 dinner will be ready. I need to do more planning. I have been lucky in that a lot of days I can go home for lunch but then on days like today when I can't I am lost since I didn't prepare for that.

Ok- I have tried keto for about 2 months and I am exhausted- less than 20g carbs. I had been on around 30-35g carbs per day before for almost 2 years, so it's not like I quit carbs cold turkey. I have been getting enough fat, but I had to add some carbs back in today- had a Greek yogurt. I have gained and lost the same 3-5 pounds over and over- very discouraging. And I have gained using those sugar-free syrups in my coffee, too... I think I do better on more protein and veggies, rather than fat.

I usually try to stay low carb (I don't count) but boy, is it hard! I just had oral surgery Thursday (2 teeth extraction, implant posts put in), so soft foods for me. First couple of breakfasts was rice porridge (comfort food, too), jello, soup with bread soaked in it, rice noodles soup, oatmeal, potatoes and carrots cooked in chicken broth in the IP has been my meals so far.

Those all look like higher carb meals?

Those all look like higher carb meals? You're probably right, but I can't think of anything low carb that's soft right now. I'm just trying not to eat much of it. At least I'm not gaining any weight! LOL!

Cottage cheese, peanut butter, avocado- not the avocado with the other two... Those just popped into my head.

Oh, cottage cheese! Yogurt, then. Think I'd hold off on peanut butter, though. Thanks!

I have gotten the low carb or protein style burger at Carl's Jr with meat, cheese and veggies, and I've become convinced that the bread is just a filler - it's way more tasty without it! I follow someone on Instagram that goes by LowCarbTraveler - she posts all kinds of low carb things you can get out and about; it's changed my approach to airport and drive thru eating in a pinch; they can be a lifesaver when there is nothing else besides convenience stores. I've had bunless burgers at Five Guys (they make a great burger bowl), In'n'Out, Hardees when east of the Rockies, McDonald's and Burger King. I like that it's pretty easy once you are willing to ask for weird things. Heck, it's not even that unusual anymore.

@merge I know you must have posted before about your approach, but I can't remember what you are doing - are you on keto or something more moderate?
Have you, and anyone else reading, been able to pretty much eliminate bread/crackers/pancakes etc. or do you indulge periodically?
I do really well for awhile, like 15 pounds down, then really poorly for awhile, like 10-15 back up. Whiplash, people. I'm trying to figure out the long term change part. I thought knowing, really knowing, how much better I feel at fewer than 100 carbs/day would convince me....but.

Thanks for the encouragement, Merge and missbennet. I'll try to increase my water intake. I've also vowed to weigh only every 6 weeks so I'm not tempted to throw in the towel. Also - you should be getting to the point now when you're often not hungry at meal time (nice side effect of LCHF diets). Consider mixing in some intermittent fasting. An 18-hour fast (basically skipping breakfast and confining your eating to the hours between noon (lunch) and six (dinner) is pretty easy to do on a regular basis and helps keep insulin levels low. I do an 18-hour fast most days. It also helps cut calories without counting. I'm doing a 24 hour fast today. Had dinner last night and won't eat again until dinner tonight. I'm going to try to do this twice a week to bump my weight loss a bit. Once your body is used to burning fat and not carbs for energy, this is not difficult. It's more a matter of getting out of the habit of eating every single meal, rather than dealing with a lot of hunger.

I was strict keto over the summer, but have been more moderate since school started (and my weight loss has continued at the same slow pace). I don't eat grains, starchy vegetables or sugar*, but I also don't bother counting carbs in non-starchy vegetables and I eat a Siggi's full-fat yogurt (*contains a little sugar, but more protein and fat) most days. I eat a little very dark chocolate once in a while, and drink some wine on the weekends. As I mentioned above, I also do intermittent fasting. The weight loss is slow, but I find this very easy to do, so I'm content.

I might give IF a try - I already eat in an 8 hour window, just so I can got to sleep without a full stomach which is more comfortable. This morning I have an email from the lady I mentioned above, and I thought I'd share the link to her blog post. She eats a ton of processed food, which I try not to do, but on the road, it helps to have a lot of options to stay on plan. Travel is the hardest for me - I get tired and cross and impatient, and the carbs come a'calling. So this link is a recent road trip she took and what she ate, steps she got in, etc. She's lost of a lot of weight over the years, and I have learned a lot from her approach.
