My mother has been having a weird problem for about a month where food just tastes bad, even water. It isn’t a metallic taste, she hasn’t changed meds, and she has had a ton of tests done and went to a gi doctor today who was very nice she said, but didn’t have any idea what it could be. He did suggest she head to a local natural grocery store and talk to some one in the homeopath dept, so she will do that this week, but I thought you ladies seem to always have suggestions or answers, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas ?

I had something like that last winter, just a bitterish off taste in my mouth even after brushing my teeth. It threw off the taste of food. The concensus on here and from my doctor was to go to the dentist and see if they could find anything which they didn't... and eventually it went away.

Could it be her sinuses? Infection or post nasal drip?

I have read that everything tasting bad can be the temporary result of a virus or medication and it will clear up over time, I recall that when I had a respiratory virus that seemed mild but lasted a long time many things tasted and smelled rancid for a time even after I was well again.

Maybe she should also see her dentist? I will suggest that too, she just had her regular appointment about a couple of months ago, but will suggest that!

Has she been eating pine nuts? Doubtful, she doesn’t like pesto (crazy lady) and I can’t think of anything else she would eat they would be in. This has been going on about a month.

Forgive typing, cat on my lap is hindering me. My thought was sinus issues as well. A dr can only go by symptoms for sinus issues--there isn't a blood test that can detect them. If the sinus issue is deeper than the visual sinuses, it can go undetected. **note--I'm a weird case and it's rare to happen!** I had a sphenoid sinus infection (deep in your brain) that went undetected for 5 months. It wasn't until they re-read my CT scan that they realized that my sphenoid sinuses were 90% blocked, not 90% clear. I won't bore you with the other details, but it wasn't good. So a CT could be in order if she rules out everything (and I think a dental visit is a good idea.)

My first suggestion was going to be something in the sinuses or related-- I've had a couple of colds now where I've lost most of my sense of taste. But I'm not sure that it was actually my sense of taste that went so much as the infection interfering with my sense of smell-- the two are related. But she may want to see an ENT rather than a GI, since the ENT specializes in nose/throat issues.
Did she by chance have one of her meds switched for another manufacturer's version? One of my meds was giving me a terrible taste in my mouth (tasted liked death) and the most god-awful heartburn (which is no good when you're already on meds for that, too). For a recent fill, they ran out of their preferred generic and gave me a different one. Bad taste went away (and I made them note on my file not to ever give me the first one again). So although she may not be taking a new med, check to see if she's got a new version of one.

Sinus issues has left me with that 'yuk' taste in the past.
So has lack of/low kidney function. That's the problem, right? It could be a myriad of things. Hope she figures it out soon and has a simple solution.

Have these all been ruled out?
Kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, thyroid problems? What about high levels of mercury or lead in her blood? Did she have chemo or radiation recently (I presume not)? Is she taking any vitamins or minerals? Does she have early dementia? Zinc deficiency? Does she have a bladder obstruction? (Apparently this can lead to dysgeusia, which is the medical term for bad taste in the mouth) Does she have reflux?
Has she tried any of these treatments?
Zinc supplements Alpha lipoic acid supplements Pilocarpine (prescription)
Hope you find something useful here.

Is her tongue white? Could be thrush. Does she use an inhaler which also causes it. Often times if a person has too much sugar etc it can get yeasty. Always tastes bad. When it's like that you tend to eat more mints which just feeds it. I know years back I had to skip all things sugary/yeasty. I know I had a book on it and things to avoid. There is also a mouth rinse I get a prescription for to clear it up.

Sometimes different manufacturers drugs will be different in this way.

For a while I was taking chewable calcium vitamins and they made everything taste odd to me. Is she taking anything new in the way of vitamins or pills?

There is also a mouth rinse I get a prescription for to clear it up. I noticed a drastic change with this when I cut way back on carbs and sugar a year ago. It gives a person awful bad breath too. No amount of tooth or tongue brushing will get rid of it. As an aside, tonsil stones are so disgusting! I never even knew that was a thing until someone showed me a YouTube video of a girl extracting dozens of them...uggghh, GAG! So gross.
