I feel silly even asking, because I know I could hit the web and find 5,000 recipes. But that’s the problem...I’ve tried some and been “meh”. I love other people’s, but never my own. I want to make a batch for Christmas. Any tips, tricks or secrets? Thanks!

We actually prefer the Crispex mix recipe. We love it for a snack all year round and often make it with just the cereal! Crispex Mix Recipe

DH is master of the Chex mix. He uses the recipe on the box, but the secret is to make 3-4 times the sauce. He also ups the garlic a bit.

My absolute favorite one is the one from Crispix (which I use as the cereal because it is both corn and rice, but you could do half corn chex and half rice chex). I like it because it tastes like the chex mix I used to get at the grocery store deli. I always add a cup of cheerios to it, and lots of mixed nuts (including macadamias if I feel like splurging). And I never measure seven cups of cereal-- I always just pour some into my 9x13 pan because that's how much room I have to work with. I spread it on paper towels after it's done in the oven-- absorbs some of the extra oil. www.kelloggs.com/en_US/recipes/crispix-mix-original-recipe.html

DH makes great Chex mix! He uses the recipe on the box, but uses less butter. He uses high quality nuts - no peanuts. He cooks it in a large mixing bowl in the microwave.

I like the traditional Chex Mix recipe. I make a huge batch using my electric roasting pan.

I use the original chex recipe, it uses a whole stick of butter and a little bit more seasoned salt and Worcestershire Sauce. I am sure that most people would not want to use my other changes though. 1. I only use Rice and Corn chex because I don't like the wheat. I also don't use anything like pretzels or cheerios. Just the Rice and the corn chex. 2. I also use the mixed nuts from Costco which I think are fancier nuts and use at least a couple of cups. 3. I like to use Lawry's seasoned salt if possible. I also do not use garlic powder. Now you're sorry you asked aren't you? ETA - Sorry fixed the weird correction of Worcestershire and other misc errors. Proof read compeateropeator...please proofread.

I use the original chex recipe, it uses a whole stick of butter and the a little bit more seasoned salt and Worcester Sauce. Same here. My grandma used to make chex mix for Christmas every year, except we called it trash. When I moved out and started making it on my own, it always tasted off. Eventually found out she never put in garlic or onion seasonings. It was just butter, Worcestershire sauce, and seasoned salt. So that is how I make the sauce and put it over the three kinds of chex cereal, sometimes I throw in pretzels or cheerios. But never nuts. Blergh.

This could have been my post, except I do use peanuts because I am allergic to tree nuts, otherwise I would use the fancy Costco nuts too. I do add pretzels because my husband likes them, but I just don’t eat them. I think the wheat Chex taste dirty.

I really don't measure. I use cheerios, corn chex goldfish, peanuts, pecans then pour it over a mixture of margarine, salt, garlic powder, onion powder and Worcester sauce. I stir, put in the oven (in a roaster pan) at 425 for the first eight minutes, stir, turn it down to 350 and stir every eight minutes for about an hour or until it is no longer greasy or shiny. I'm craving some right now.LOL Another recipe like above I like is the hot mini crackers, called firecrackers.

I use the original chex recipe, it uses a whole stick of butter and a little bit more seasoned salt and Worcestershire Sauce. I use a whole stick of butter too. I use 2 1/2 teaspoons of seasoned salt and 2tbsp of Worcestershire. I don't use the garlic salt and whatever else is on the box. As I'm heating my oven to 250, I cut up that stick of butter and allow it to melt in my big 9x13 pyrex dish. Then I add the seasonings. I measure all of my ingredients in a large mixing bowl before I put it in the butter. Otherwise, whatever goes in first soaks up all the butter. I also add a cup of pretzels and a cup of mixed nuts and about a handful of regular nuts. I don't use the full 3 cups of wheat chex because I don't like them as much as the corn and rice. I bake it all for one hour but stir it every 15 minutes. I let it cool for a bit when it is done and put it in a ziplock or this huge tupperware bowl I have that my dd calls the Chex Mix bowl. My favorite part of the Chex mix is the *rye* wafers. Are they rye and where would I get them ? Thx Oh man, I love those, and they’d be good in the homemade version, wouldn’t they? Although I grabbed this picture from Amazon, I occasionally buy rye chips at the store. They are from Gardettos and I find them in the snack aisle. Thanks for the hints, everyone. I can see there will need to be several batches in my future to try some variations. I think doubling the seasoning may be the way to go. And it’s interesting that so many of you skip the Wheat Chex.

I'm a Chex Mix junkie. I make the recipe off the back of the box, but I use McCormick's steak seasoning instead of seasoned salt. And I don't use mixed nuts, usually...I do a mix of pecans and cashews, sometimes peanuts, too. Oh, and I don't use bagel chips. Sometimes I throw in Cheerios. I tried it with Goldfish crackers a few months ago and that was okay. I love Wheat Chex so that always gets included. I used to do it for an hour in the oven, but a big glass bowl in the microwave is super fast and just as good so that's how I do it now.
I never thought about doubling the sauce...I think next time I'll try making half again as much and see how that tastes. I was planning on making a big batch this week for a holiday party so this will be a good time to try that.

I loosely follow the one on the Crispix box but I double the amount of seasonings (including butter, worcestershire, powdered seasonings). I DO measure the cereal (I use what's listed in the recipe even though I doubled the other stuff). I don't measure the other add-ins. Usually a couple handfuls of each. I add in mixed nuts, pretzels, bagel chips and sesame sticks. I'm the only one in my house that eats it so I make it the way I like Pam

I make a Italian-ish version that my Gramma always made. Per one box of corn Chex melt one stick of butter and toss with Chex. Bake at 250, stirring every 15 minutes. At the 30 minute mark I mix one cup of grated Parmesan with Italian seasoning, garlic, onion powder, and lots of dill and toss over Chex. The last 15 minutes I add slivered almonds and butter pretzels.

I haven’t made it in couple of years but mine includes rice and corn Chex, Honeycombs cereal, pretzels. Whole stick of butter, garlic salt, sugar, and soy sauce.
If I ever make it again, I will remember the tip about doubling the sauce recipe. I feel like there’s never enough.

I also double the sauce, or in my case, half the cereals because that's all my largest bowl will fit I also add Cheerios and dry roasted peanuts and skin on peanuts. I don't do the bagel chips. I also use smoky paprika and chili seasoning as part of my spices.
