I guess technically they are "Kinder Joy" in the US. My kids were so excited at first - they were convinced they were going to be arrested for possessing contraband. And then when they opened it, it was such a let down. My daughter wouldn't eat the "gloop" and my son's toy was broken. In fact, I see it still in 2 little pieces abandoned by the tree where he opened it. I'm sure it's a choking hazard for the pets at this point, lol!

Santa Mouse brought one for my son. What is this gloop you speak of? Are these not like the Kinder Eggs I know and love from Germany?

They were in the stocking here. Both were a huge disappointment. We had broken toy, too and neither kid would eat whatever that gooey stuff was. Big boo!

I'm not sure what is in the original. My son said it was like nutella and there was a little scoop to go with it. He liked it well enough but he couldn't convince my daughter to try it.

I smuggled some back from Germany a few days ago. The kids had already heard of them, but we're glad they were real.

The REAL Kinder Eggs do not have any nutella in them. A chocolate shell with milk chocolate on the outside and a white chocolate in the inside shell with a toy that is a capsule in the middle. Simply yummy chocolate with a toy inside a capsule.
My grands loved the Kinder Egg Advent calendar this year. They usually have a wonderful Easter type of Kinder Egg (huge) that I should probably see on the shelves in about a week or so, since Easter is so early this year.

the toys are designed to be assembled - were the pieces broken?
Yeah - the 'goop' is delicious but NOT as good or the same as the genuine Kinder eggs
we found them an okay substitute but would rather have the rea lthing

Interesting - and sad - read: Why Kinder Eggs are illegal in the US.

I love all of the Fererro products. I go to Europe (Germany / Austria) and buy other products made by this company but more difficult to find in Canada. I cannot understand that why the FDA considers this item to be illegal. A year or more ago, there was quite the discussion on this board about Kinder Eggs and why the restrictions on them being sold in America. This topic is closed for me. I am grateful that I live in Canada and can eat basically what I want to and as being part of the Commonwealth, have yummy chocolates available for me to purchase.

Perhaps it was my use of the phrase 'to get around' that makes it sound like I think Ferrero is doing something bad and I've offended you? Let me assure you, I think Kinder Eggs being illegal in the US is stupid. I just thought the story behind the creation of the 1938 act was interesting and Ferrero's attempt at making Kinder Eggs that would be legal in the US more of a "Here, you crazy Americans. How 'bout these?" idea.

I hadn't heard of them so I had to google them? I was thinking something like the Cadbury eggs. So when I googled them I remember seeing them on our last Europe trip. Why are they illegal here? I remember when we went to Germany my FIL bought loads of chocolate! lol! I would love to go back!

My kids had one and are a little of the goop, but not much. Very disappointing. I’m wondering why it was so darn expensive if it was made in the US (are they?). I realize it takes a lot of work to create that but i think they were over $6/each (a specialty candy store where prices are high on everything).

Santa brought the kids kinder eggs this year in their stocking. They were excited, until they opened them up. The toys were fine, but the two drops of chocolate, yuck!!

My daughter had two in her stocking. she already knows they aren’t the real thing and is disappointed that the US butchered the concept. She was introduced to them on a trip to Canada. My sister and I were introduced to them in Europe. I also put one in my sister’s stocking and she was so excited til my daughter explained the differences. Neither has opened one yet.

I have found that the vast majority of Americans (at least here) are not like that. Yet, in your eagerness to ‘defend’ our country (against whom, I don’t know), you manage to paint the lot of us as over-sensitive assholes, all while pissing off a large segment of our pea population who have been nothing but supportive. Please stop.

We used to get Kinder Surprise from a friend in Canada because they were safe for dd's nut allergies. However, that's apparently not the case anymore but it sounds like we aren't missing much. My kids all got Yowie World eggs in their stockings and were happy with them. I remember the days when the Kinder Surprise toys were the most amazing intricate things you had to put together but the last box we got (a few years ago) had mostly little ferret type figurines. I wish I'd saved all the neat ones.

I don't get the appeal of Kinder Eggs (German or American). My sister gave my kids some from Germany and they were okay, but nothing special.

I put gave DH an (American) kinder egg in his stocking, but he hasn't tried it yet. At Walmart today they were in with the Christmas clearance but were NOT marked down, so I guess they will be hanging around for awhile. I don't know that he will be a fan of the gooey filling, it might be like a Cadbury cream egg and he doesn't like those. But I do!

My kids all got the Kinder Joys. We like them ok. The toys are cute and I like the chocolate filling. I have only had European Kinder eggs once, so maybe I don't know what I'm missing. I thought the toys were cute and I like just about every candy Fererro makes.

Not from me, you haven't. And not from any of the other peas that I've noticed, except for maybe one in particular who thrives on being awful. And here is what you don't ever hear from us (because of course it wouldn't be true) ... that Canada is somehow inferior. Which is basically what you tell us about the U.S. every chance you get. But whatever. Free speech and all.

There's no " gloop" in the original Kinder, as someone else mentioned earlier, they're hollow and the toys is in a plastic capsule inside the egg.
I was given to understand that it was because there was a non food item touching the food item ( the capsule made of plastic inside the hollow chocolate egg) and the fact that the toy could be a chocking hazard was the reason they were banned in the US.Our capsules are too big for any child to swallow and pretty difficult to open by an adult let alone a child. You have to sort pf push it in and twist it to open it. All ours do have a warning on them that they are not suitable for children under 3 years old. The toys inside are small and some you do have to assemble yourself.
Kinder egg caused three fatalities in 40 years according to safety reports, which is a pretty low considering the billions of Kinder eggs which have been sold around the world.

But we can have all the guns we want! YEARS ago (talking 1970s) they had really cool toys in them. I remember getting collectible figurines in them. Good memories.
