We went to Mexico for a week over the holidays. I’ve been home more than two weeks and am still waking up at 2:30-3 am everyday. I’m an early riser as it is and my internal clock is super strong. As a result, I’ve been asleep by 8:30 every night. The schedule has been driving me wonky. I tried staying up until 10 and still woke at 2:30. I’ve been exhausted.
Last night I took melatonin. Went to bed at 10 and woke at 6:30 with a pounding migraine. Hour is good. Migraine bad (but I get migraines and any change to my schedule brings them on badly).
Hopefully I broke the cycle. It’s like I need to sleep longer once. Would love to sleep in more but I’ll take 6:30. Now my house will be quiet for hours and I have alone time.
Does anyone else have experiences with melatonin. I’d love to hear? Should I take it again tonight just in case?

I tried it for about a week since my brother and a friend swore by it. I had weird, vivid dreams when I tried it. I ended up giving the rest of the Costco sized bottle to my brother. It wasn’t for me. When I want to knock myself out, one Benadryl does the trick. Two leaves me groggy halfway through the next morning.

When I took it I had nightmares with the first dose. Never took it again.

Didn't have nightmares but I don't think it works well. I take 1/2 flexeril everynight and that works.

It doesn't do much for me. I've tried 1mg, 5mg and 10mg. It helps me sleep a bit, but not as well as Benadryl. The 10mg seemed least effective. It did seem to change my dreams some. If I missed the 20 minutes after taking the pill to go to bed then it didn't help me at all.

I can't take it. It gives me crazy, weird, psychedelic dreams that leave me unnerved in the morning.
Benadryl usually does the trick for me.

I don't care for melatonin, but I do like tryptophan. There is also a product called Somno Pro that has melatonin, tryptophan and l-theanine. I liked the somno pro, but decided to break out the parts to try since I already knew melatonin didn't do much for me. Turns out the tryptophan was my jam.
My husband likes melatonin, but sometimes suffers the weird dreams. He has been using a product called Drift Off that does have melatonin in it, at the same dose he typically takes, but for some reason he doesn't get the dreams. It has Valerian extract, GABA, tryptophan, chamomile extract, passion flower extract, lemon balm extract, hops extract and melatonin.

I took it once when I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep. Vivid weird dreams but I wasn't asleep, it was freaky.
It might work better to take it before I try to go to sleep but I haven't been that brave to try it again.

We use a product by Webber called Super Sleep. Costco sells it. Within a 1/2 hr, I'm out cold as is my ds. No side effects for us. Attachments:

It helps me fall asleep, but does not keep me in deep sleep all night. Unisom (an antihistimine) works the best for me.

We had a bad time readjusting after we got back from Korea. DH ended up using melatonin a couple times and did not report weird dreams. I still haven't tried it.

I have really strange dreams and nightmares on it - it doesn't work for me. I do like Natural Calm, which is a magnesium supplement you mix into hot water. I drink it like tea in the evening.

Hmm. I didn’t have weird dreams. I don’t need any help falling sleep. Unfortunately I fall asleep too well. I need help sleeping during night hours. I don’t want to be up through the night but sleep through the evening. Would love to stay awake to say goodnight to my kids. I think a cat nap in the afternoon could help me too but I never find the time.
Meanwhile, I took a pill for my migraine and now I can’t keep my eyes open. It’s a rare side effect. Happens more often when I wake with a migraine and have to take meds for it on an empty stomach.

Add me to the list of bad dreams. They were so bad I would wake up crying & I can still recall the worst one vividly and it makes me upset. Stacy

Check your dosage. Usually 2.5mg is enough to sleep well. If I take the 5mg I sleep too hard, the next day I feel down and out, and I sometimes have bad headaches.

I have the same reaction with the weird dreams. I take Benadryl. Sorry to hear about the migraine. I know those hurt, and hope you feel better soon.

Try the time release. 3 mg helps me. Natrol is the brand we use.

Melatonin will give you WICKED dreams when you first start taking it. It'll take a week or two for them to stop. I've heard/read you're supposed to cycle on/off of it. I started taking magnesium citrate before bed (2 caps) and I feel like that doesn't leave me groggy the next morning vs. the melatonin.

Paige, I have tried melatonin a few times. Between headaches, not enough sleep and nightmares I would never take it again. I could also feel my pulse in my head. I was not impressed with that at all.
I tried super sleep and that was just as bad.
We also had an Rx strength bottle of tryptophan and it didn’t work either.
Zopiclone is the easiest. I took Sublinox and made cinnamon buns at 2 am one night and took them to bed with me and the second time I woke up outside on the front lawn. Good times!

No matter what dose I tried, melatonin does nothing to help me sleep.

I think it is ok to take melatonin once in awhile, but I have heard/read that taking it on an ongoing basis can interfere with your body’s natural ability to produce melatonin. I have a lot of young clients who are on it and wonder what the long term implications will be.

Didn't have nightmares but I don't think it works well. I take 1/2 flexeril everynight and that works. How were you able to get a prescription for so much flexeril? My husband and I have gotten it for back problems but our doctors just give us a very small number of pills. We would both love to have some on hand for when our backs act up and not have to go in to the doctor each time (that gets expensive). My husband always asks for one of mine when he has a minor back thing but I don't want to give mine away! Even when I know one would help, I feel like I need to save it for when my back is really bothering me.

They are 10mg tabs and I cut them in half per his instructions. Been using them for about 4 years?
