I am thrilled that she got out everything, including the BB! Once your body recovers from all the turmoil, I pray that you are pain free from here on out. No more migraines, no more pills to take, just blissful days ahead. Keep us posted on how the recovery is going.

Thank you all for your kind words and support. I really thought I'd instantly be out of pain but getting through this recovery first is key, and it's a HUGE recovery, apparently. I've been just lying in bed, unable to do almost everything. I shouldn't complain, but I can't wait to be able to do things for myself again, and then I'll see where I'm at with my pain levels. I keep staring at the jar the surgeon gave to my husband (with 1 silicone bead and with the BB), and wondering when I'll be out of pain.
Hope everyone here is doing well. I'll check back when I'm able to read again!

UPDATE: 1/26/18 : Just yesterday I realized that my intense, horrific daily pain.............. is gone!!!!!!! Yup!! I am so afraid of jinxing myself, but this seems like a done deal. That was my surgeon's plan--to take that pain away, to scrape at every bit of foreign matter in my socket (even chip away at the orbital bone until she retrieved some of it!!) until it was 100% out of me! Retrieving that BB was just inspiring and now I am beginning to remember what it feels like sans pain!
I'm still very swollen and sore, but I'm pleased with this part of my "journey" already. I go for another recheck on Monday, so I'll see what's up. I have to remind myself to STOP and slow down when I think I'm fine and I could hop back into real life..... That part is tough, but I'm trying to behave.
I've referred 2 other BB gun/eye patients to her and they're traveling from all over the U.S. to meet with her. I'm glad I could possibly help! I've also decided to tell the person who shot me that I'm no longer in that horrible pain. He said he cried when he read that. I didn't want him to live in guilt forever, but it took over 40 years to reach out to him and be able to forgive him. I think I did the right thing.
Thank you all for your posts here and for your messages of encouragement. I appreciate it and I could only wish for pain-free days for the other "Pain Peas".

what a great update! I hope your pain-free days continue!! And yes, continue to take your recovery slow and steady!!
I'm sure it was a difficult and emotional thing to get in touch with the person who shot you, and tell him you forgive him. HUGE kudos to you for doing that.

I don't even "know" you and I'm emotional to read your latest update. I'm so pleased that your pain is gone and so impressed that your instinct was to lift the pain from the shoulders of others, not just the other victims but your shooter too.
May you go from strength to strength.

I am so darned proud of you for contacting the shooter all these many years later to let him know you are FINALLY free of the daily torturous pain. And I am thrilled to know that two other people will be receiving the same results as you have had.
@bergdorfblonde, I nominate you for our first Pain Pea Recovery Award! Although with all that you have been through over the last 40 years, I think you deserve to still be a lifetime member of our "pain peas" group. You have always posted support and requesting updates on how everyone is doing, and I think we would all miss you terribly if you were to stay away from those posts now.

Thank you all so much! Your words are touching!!! I'm just following my heart. Having that HORRIBLE pain lifted brings clarity. I *did* become a moderator on a website for monocular people many years ago to try to help families be guided through their new terrible journey, but I didn't expect that the website would connect me with my current surgeon and my new journey. I am forever grateful and I'm glad to help other people and families try to navigate through this.
As far as my "shooter", it just feels right now, and keep in mind that he was my very closest friend since I was a baby (until the accident at age 13). I do miss him. I'm glad if this brings him some relief and I hope that he'll do the right thing. That part of his life is a secret that he's kept from his wife, children and everyone. He gives back as a Chiropractor, but it's up to him to face the facts and talk about this when and if he's ready. That's his deal. I've done all I could do.
I'll continue checking in or beginning "Pain" threads; no worries. Knowing that kind of pain is a distinct thing that will never be forgotten!! Thank you all again. I'll check back soon. In the meantime, I'm trying really hard to slow down and behave. I tripped yesterday while holding folded towels and I jerked my head. Praying it's not a setback. I go on Monday, so I'll see how I'm doing. It's hard to hold me down!
Hugs to all of you, especially to my dear pain peas who endure their own torture too often. I am thinking of you!

UPDATE: I saw my surgeon for another follow-up today. I didn't know what to expect although I'm feeling more like myself. Every time I see this surgeon, we both cry!!!!!! She told me that she now shares the website that I moderate for monocular people with her patients who are (or will be) monocular, to help them with their new life. I'm honored that she went on the site and found it helpful enough to pass it along!!
I told her that a few people will be contacting her to see if she'd to their surgeries, as they've been in a similar situation as mine. She's happy to help them all out if she could. Sweet!!
As for my progress: I'm about 70% recovered already, not even 3 weeks post-op!!! Pretty impressive!!!!!! That pain from the surgery is almost 100% gone (IMO, but she said that I'm not there yet), so I'm happy. I had hoped she'd say I'm done and ready for the next step, but I have to give it 1 more month, go for a recheck and see where I stand.
She said that she's pretty sure I'll need 1 more surgery to make the eye look symmetrical and "perfect" in her view. It won't be nearly as serious as this last surgery, but recovery will take up to 3 months. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! NOW I know what she meant by the word, "journey"!!! I'm so very happy that she's taking the time to try to make me look as perfect as she can & I appreciate that, but I was hoping I'd be almost done, so this next surgery and recovery will be tough for me. I'm still trying to support DH who is going through his bladder cancer treatments and facing many roadblocks, infections, etc......... and I don't know where he'll be with that......... I guess I just have to pray for a good outcome for both of us and find the patience in myself to finish this out for me.
My surgeon asked about my pain and when I told her about waking up last week with NO pain, I began crying and so did she!!!! She said that THIS is why she's in this field. She wants me to share my story on her website that is almost up. She just thinks that the whole thing is incredible--that the boy who shot me was my best friend and he was monocular as a child; that I'm speaking to him and gave him the latest update; that I was the 1st in the world to get the implant I did, etc.............. and that I've finally reached the point where she was able to take that pain away. *Goosebumps*
Hoping all of the Pain Peas and their families are doing well and getting by. We each have our journeys and sometimes they could be rough for a very long time. I'm blessed that I'm finally getting a reprieve.
