I think it's the right thing, but too late in coming. Whether or not the NFL or the Ravens previously saw the video released today (and there is very credible information that at least the NFL did - but they deny it), they knew what happened in that elevator and they still issued that wristslap 2 game suspension.
Now they know there is no possible PR way they could keep him.
He'll be back on another team in two years.
<sigh>

Great. Now let's see how they handle the next domestic violence case....see if they really learned anything.

Typical of not just the NFL but big business in general. It's not about the crime, the moral injustice, etc., it's how the negative press will affect their bottom dollar. Period.

No one can pick him up now. Goodell just suspended him indefinitely. Too late, but the right decision.

While I am very happy to hear that something has been done-finally-I am still angry that there have been multiple opportunities prior to now to have done the right thing.
The man ASSAULTED her. There is no other word for it. Those tapes show it and have from the very beginning. Why has their been no law enforcement involvement? Surely there is enough evidence of for a battery charge? Something?? HE HIT HER HARD ENOUGH TO RENDER HER UNCONSCIOUS.

Good grief - what took so long? The NFL has serious issues.

I predict about the same for Rice. Me too. He will go to rehab, lay low for a year or two, and then seek to be reinstated and will probably be successful. Then he only needs a team. Nobody can pick him up right now but only time will tell about the future. He is still young.

While I'm glad, he wasn't suspended for what he did. He's suspended because the public now knows what he did.
I'll take it.
I'd be more impressed if it happened earlier and not as a result of public pressure.
But I'll take it.
I'm also worried about his wife after this. Ugh.

It does make me curious what my employer's policy is on domestic violence. I asked dh what his employer's policy is and he wasn't sure either.

My company does not have a specific policy relating to domestic violence (for the offender). We do have extensive policies relating to crimes of various sorts and domestic violence would be treated as other violent crimes. We do have a number of resources available to employees who are victims of domestic violence, though.

The NFL has also made a concerted effort over the past five years to court female viewers/fans - they want the extra $$$ they bring in, unlike dogs. I think that increasing number of female sportscasters will also remain vocal, making it harder to sweep under the rug. I am hopeful that this will be longer lasting than Vick's consequences (I will never cheer for a team Vick plays on).

What really ticks me off is the tweet on the Raven's official twitter posted after the beating - where his now wife says she is very sorry for the part she played in the event. It makes it sound like they think it's her fault and they support the SOB for beating the crap out of her. In no way, shape or form is it her fault. He hit her first. And even if she did hit him first - nope, still doesn't matter!

I'm not sure which I find more appalling, that the NFL took so long or that she went ahead and married him.

I'm also worried about his wife after this. Ugh. This was my first thought as well. As for the comparison with Vick... I live in a house full of Eagles fans. I despise Mike Vick. I refused to ever buy his jerseys or anything with him on it when he was on the team. The difference that I see, in terms of whether Rice will be back in the league, is that Vick went to prison and served time for what he did. Rice's wife (gf at the time), dropped the charges so he will never serve time for what he did. I think it will be a harder sell to put him back in the league because of that.

She has a child with him and probably fears for their lives. Abuse puts you in a terrible mindset and makes you feel like you deserve it. Heck society does too many times.

No, I absolutely understand how messed up abuse can be. Doesn't mean I still can't think she's a fool, especially if she has a kid to think about.

There are a lot more female sportscasters these days so maybe that will help.

Abuse is so weird. Even when you are in the middle of, even when the rational part of your brain is screaming at you to run, go, this isn't you, this isn't ABOUT you, that you could not have ever done a single thing to deserve it...you are still justifying why it happens. You minimalize it, put it in a box, wrap it up in a strange guilt that you did actually do something to deserve it and top it with a smile and an apology that you are sorry that it happened, I hope I didn't inconvenience you.
From the outside, it makes you look foolish and no one understands why you are still there. On the inside, you have little voice that says you ARE foolish and WHY are you still there? But the bigger voice keeps you rooted in place and says that yeah, you deserve it. You shouldn't have...done what ever.
The anger I have doesn't even extend in her direction. My anger is directed at a system that saw it and did nothing, a program that only acted when their best interest was in danger, and a man that learned that his anger can be directed at a person whose only fault is to fall in love with him.

This is just another reason why I gave up watching professional football years ago. Between the rookie bullying, the smell of homophobia, the criminal doings of players every time I turn on television; be it murder, attempted murder, sexual assault and/or harassment, domestic violence, dog fighting, etc. I just can't in good conscience support it anymore. Sure, there are players out there that are good role models, but it's that whole "one bad apple" saying and it's just leaves a bad taste for me.

The NFL & the Ravens should not have allowed him to practice/play, citing his status as pending, until the investigation concluded. IMHO they look idiotic terminating/suspending him now, after the video released today did not provide new information & was mere visual confirmation of the incident reported at the time. However, the right decision is better late than never!
Given criminal charges will not be filed, the weak 2-game suspension rendered by the league & the public apology required by the team are complete, the public heard overwhelming support & gushing accolades from his coach/teammates, & the "strict" NFL domestic violence policy was adopted after the incident occurred & punishment was served, I expect Rice will not walk away from the NFL quietly.
My thoughts & prayers are with his child(ren) during this ordeal.
