they were making me nuts too. this time they weren't in my drain but near my fruits. so, I got rid of all the fruits on the counter. everything went into the fridge. I tried the vinegar and soap thing too and that didn't work. when I have had them near my sink drain, I just make sure I keep the sink area as dry as possible and make sure the sink strainer is clean and free of food.

I have no fruit out. And even when all dishes are done and away they are around. Even bought new sponges. Aghhhh!

Make sure you don't have rotten food and don't realize it. We have had a bad fruit fly problem, turns out there were rotten onions in a container we didn't realize had anything in it.

I'm going to do a complete clean out tomorrow. But really only have food in the fridge or pantry (which is on other side of the room!)

Make sure you're using Apple Cider Vinegar not just plain white vinegar. We've left ours out. I change them when they need it.

Yes, use the Apple Cider Vinegar & keep whatever you put it in open if possible it will attract more than closing it off with saran wrap or whatever you might use.

We went to the hardware store and bought two cans of this insect fogger. Pressed the nozzle, left the house for a couple of hours and returned to a bug free home!

I just had this problem.
Put out a disposable cup half full of apple vinegar with one drop of dawn (not sure why). Add a teaspoon of honey (I put this in a smear just above the apple vinegar). The honey attracts and traps them. I left the cup at the back of my counter for a week. (actually my husband and cleaning lady kept throwing it out!).
Anyway, about a week later the bottom of the cup was full and the house was empty of gnats!

Are they gnats or fruit flies? And will the fruit fly traps work for gnats?

I put a slice of watermelon in a container and then covered it with cling wrap. Poke holes and prepare to be grossed. I also poured bowling water down all the drains and keep them covered when not in use. I just placed a bowl over the disposal/drain.

Our local McDonald's has them really bad...by the tea & catsup dispensers. I don't know which is attracting them, maybe both. Gross!

We've got them, too. I have no fruits or veggies out, I've done a drill team clean (many times) and have shallow bowls of the apple cider vinegar concoction set out all over the place and they just WON'T GO AWAY!
It's driving me nuts.

We were having a big problem with them too -- I bought an individual sized boxed wine from a grocery store and left it open near the fruit and they dive right in and don't come out ... I don't know if they are drunk and giddy and drown or think it is heaven and stay there or just don't know how to get out ... but either way -- it appears to be working ... I bought white wine -- not sure if that makes a difference or not...

I've had luck trapping them with a small dish of apple cider vinegar mixed with a drop of dish soap and set out on the counter for a few days. But if you've checked everywhere for fruit that's gone bad and can't find anything, they might been living in the kitchen sink drain. You can use a mix of vinegar and baking soda down the drain (no water at first) to foam up and touch all parts of the drain, then when it's done foaming, run the hottest water you can for a few minutes.

We had them at work for months. They had a pest guy in multiple times with no results. I got sick and tired of having to bat away the gnats to see my computer screen (yes, it was THAT bad) and went to the hardware store 2 doors down, bought a No-Pest Strip.
Voila! In two hours, the swarm of gnats was gone -- just a couple remained. A week later, there were none. Best $8 of my own money I ever spent.

If you have a garbage disposal, I recommend removing the ring and flappy part to clean that...if it's anything like mine, it is gag worthy!
Also, I used to find them in the bathroom and found that they were hiding in that little water overflow hole on the front on the bathroom sink basin. Poured bleach down that little hole and annihilated them.

Ok, I too am battling these little pests. I have tried all of it, cleaning, vinegar, honey wiped on yellow post-it, you name it, I have tried it.
Thought all was lost until this morning.....I have noticed in the past, when I have a pot soaking in the sink, a gnat would be in the bubbles when I came back to scrub. So, I thought I would try leaving a pot filled with bubbles in the sink for a while. (I mean a bunch of bubbles). I came back to check a couple hours later, and low and behold those bubbles were covered in gnats. Not gross covered but enough I thought it was not a coincidence. So I washed them down, ran the disposal and filled it again. Just checked it again, and more were stuck in the bubbles. I use a pink grapefruit soap so maybe the citrus smell is helping. I will keep the bubble bath flowing until these things are gone. Thought I would share for all you desperate gnat swatters out there.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this post. OP asked about gnats. Gnats and fruit flies are not the same thing. The vinegar and Dawn solution definitely works for fruit flies (I do cover the container with plastic wrap with holes poked in it, because it seems to help trap them), but I have no idea whether it works for gnats. But people seem to be giving the OP ideas for getting rid of fruit flies rather than gnats. Gnats are usually outside, in my experience -- I'm not sure I've ever seen them inside, although I don't see why they couldn't be.
