Its easier and safer to pull out than back out. If I am going to an event where the masses will be leaving at the same time I back in if I can't pull through. Otherwise it takes ages to get out, you hold up everyone in your lane and you run the chance of hitting people because the lot is full of them. But, I don't hold people up to park this way.

If I'm in my dh's truck (which I tend to drive in the winter) and no one is around, and the lot is small, I will back in to a parking spot. It's easier to get out of the lot. I'd rather do the work up front than later. As ds says, "you don't drive Dad's truck well." It's just too big, and I'm not use to it.
Now the big lots, I just park in the back, no matter what vehicle I'm in and pull through to the front space. Again easier to pull out,and I know I won't be backing up into someone.
I want to know why people can't park straight and park on a angle. I try to give the benefit of the doubt that the previous person beside them were parked funny leading to their obvious park job, but if there is a cart return or other non-parking spot item beside your vehicle, then I cannot do that.

I back up into a spot (or pull through) whenever I can. It is easier to see around you when you are backing into a spot than when you are trying to back out of a spot. Before I had a backup camera on my car, I would have a hard time backing out of spots if the two cars around me were SUVs or pickup trucks. I've always had smaller cars and I would often have to back out blindly because I couldn't see around the cars parked next to me. And like dewryce said, if you are someplace crowded, like a concert or sporting event, and everyone is leaving at the same time, it can take forever to back out of a spot. ETA - At my workplace, as part of our annual safety training, we are encouraged to backup into parking spaces.

It's easier for me to pull out because of all the jackasses that speed through the parking garage at work. I turn on my headlights before I pull out of my spot so they can see me also.
I can back my Pilot in on the first try and it takes 15 seconds. Why would it bother you so bad if it took longer and took me more tries though? Why so impatient?

Maybe they are all Girl Scout leaders ha ha...we (at least here) are trained from day one to always back into parking spots at camp in case of an emergency evacuation. Everyone can get out more quickly and safely that way.
We all back into our home driveway because we have lots of kids that play on the street out front and it's sometimes difficult to see them when backing out of the driveway.

OK, I don't know why, but with my current car, I can't tell if I am straight or crooked. When I look out the front window, I look straight, but when I open the door, my car is slightly angled. I do correct it, but I don't know what it is about the car I am currently driving. I never had this problem before.

Drives me a bit nuts, too, kernriver. I do get the reasons people do it, and they make sense, but waiting while the backer-inners back in irritates the bees out of me.

My husband taught me how and that is how everyone does it in Japan. It's a thing there. Once you get good at it, you never want to park the regular pull in way again. it is so much easier to back in and drive straight out!

I have several neighbors who back into their carports- I don't get it. Our street is not busy- I rarely have to wait on anyone when I'm leaving. We all have short, straight driveways. It would take me way longer to back in than to back out when I'm leaving. In parking spots, I pull through whenever possible.

I do agree that if you’re going to do that, either know how to do it well or go ahead and pull in, wait for people to pass, then adjust.
I park normally. I don’t enjoy backing into a spot.

Most people cannot back in and park in one pass. And then there are cars waiting for them to finish the job and people wondering if it's safe to pass or if they are going to give it another go. Then there are the cars that go a car length past the spot, then their back up lights come on. Well, I had no idea you were going to back in there, so now I'm in your way. And I can't back up because there are 3 other cars behind me. Then they run the risk of hitting me if they are determined to back into that spot, or have to go around and curse me for the rest of the day because I'm not a mind reader. I think the safety of backing into a spot is just an illusion. You are backing in before or backing out after. You still run the risk of hitting someone and you still inconvenience people when you are jockeying around.

He has to be REALLY crooked to even consider correcting it. Probably why I notice it when others do it as well. Of course, when he parks crooked it's always in the big lots and at the back of the lot. Probably because he doesn't need to take the time to have more control. Sorry, just thinking while typing now. Now I'm going to pay attention to the makes of the cars. To see if one make/model is parked that way more often.

When you are backing in, the people and cars you risk hitting are well within your sight because your vision isn't being blocked by the vehicles on either side of you. A lot of time you are backing out blind to a degree. Also, people don't generally walk in parking spaces between cars. They walk in the lane behind parked cars all the time, and can be very hard to spot when you're backing out. But I agree about the jockeying around and won't hold up anyone else for more than about 5 seconds. Pulling through is always preferable.

I find it hilarious people are bitching about people backing into a car space, but I'm willing to bet think nothing of stopping in the middle of an aisle in a store, talking on their phone in public, or peeing all over a public toilet seat without cleaning up after themselves. Legit.

And with electric vehicles, you can't even hear that the engine is on.

Dh backs in if we are some place that will have a lot of people exiting at the same time. He’s super efficient about it though. I don’t back in because I’m not.

Legit. It”s not letting me post outside the quote box. i always stop in the middle of the aisle so people can pass me on either side. If you stop on the side they have to go around or you may be blocking something they want yo get at. i have been known to not give my credit card until I have the attention of the person screaming behind me on their cell phone. I then very politely say shut the fuck up I cant hear what the clerk is saying. Works every time, and usually makes the clerk laugh. But I understand the need to talk on the phone. What I do not understand is why people back into parking spaces. It takes more time. Why??? some toilets flush so vigorously that they spit water up onto the seat. I have slways considered it my obligation wipe any surface that I set my bare ass down on.

Around here it's a military thing, Iraq/Afghanistan veterans, for what I presume are safety, and security reasons, and now it's become the norm.

The multi-national company that my DH works for has reverse-park-only rule in all their car parks. It is safer, and the more you practise it, the quicker and easier it gets. The only time I don't reverse park is if I'm grocery shopping and have a large trolley of bags to get into the car boot.

I think the safety of backing into a spot is just an illusion. You are backing in before or backing out after. You still run the risk of hitting someone If you're backing into a space there's unlikely to be people/kids standing in the spot, not true when reversing out where people and cars are moving around in the area you're moving into. I nearly always reverse in and it's very common here. I have seen this discussed by the Peas before and hadn't known it was so disliked by some. I've never heard of anyone being irritated by it here. It's not difficult...I almost always do it in one move so that's odd that so many are bad at parking like that. And the reason is definitely because it's easier to pull out forwards into traffic than reversing into it.

DH backs in if it's a tight spot or if he knows it will be busy when we pull out (like at the car races, when everyone leaves at the same time). I would just look for a pull-through if possible. When DH backs in, he gets it right the first time and doesn't block anyone!

I always back in, and it doesn't take me multiple tries.
I once attended a lecture on womens' safety, that the police officer advised that a woman should always back into a parking space, so that if she finds herself needing to get away quickly, for whatever reason, she is straight out. Good advice in my opinion.

As everyone said, it's safer to get out. Are we all in that much of a hurry that we can't wait 60 seconds, if that, for someone to back into a parking spot?

I like to try to back in because I find that when I try backing out, people and cars just ignore those pretty white reverse lights and make backing out a complete pain and nerve-racking. I am always I'm going to hit someone no matter how much I look around because I find that most people just don't care enough to pay attention in parking lots. For those that get annoyed by waiting - you're waiting for someone one way or another - you would have to wait for me to back out.
