I'm in Northern California and backing in is NOT the norm here and I would say I see less than 5% of all cars in parking lots parking that way. It seems to most definitely be a regional thing. I can say that given the layout and tight space of many of the city garages downtown in Sacramento, I'd love to see HOW to back in to a parking space. It's beyond my imagination.

You mean my husband spent only two days in Traverse City and managed to go somewhere that you haven't in your "many times"? I posted the city link, so it must not be too far off the beaten path. P.S. Feel free not to respond to me with your passive aggressive replies that insinuate what you don't have the balls to say. (Huh.)๐ Yup. Exactly that's exactly what I'm insinuating. The huh wasn't passive aggressive. I genuinely said that reading your post. I did too. We spent a week at Torch Lake a couple summers ago and went into Traverse City a few times and I didn't notice that either. But I also wasn't driving.

I don't back in often, but when I do, I can do it in one attempt, not multiple. I prefer to pull through so that I am facing out when I try to leave the spot. I am in an accord and if a mini van or SUV parks next to me, it is difficult to see past them to back out of the spot. With people frequently driving too fast through the parking lot, I totally get the appeal of being able to pull out front-ways. The back-up camera is a godsend in those situations, but our old accord doesn't have one.

Re: it being a regional thing, I think a lot of it also depends on how parking areas are designed where you live. For example, last night I went downtown to a concert and had to park in a garage. This thread made me aware of how difficult it would be to back every car out to leave... but the garage was designed with angled parking. There really wasn't a way that anyone could back into a spot (especially in one motion). I would say that of the places I visit frequently here where you can theoretically "pull through" , probably half of those are designed with angled spots and one way traffic in each lane. So if you were to pull through, you cannot easily pull straight out of the spot and go the correct direction in the lane. You are much more likely to find lots where you can do that in the suburbs here, but once you are inside of the interstate loop most of them are garages and lots like I described above. Something I had never really thought about before reading this thread ๐ค

Well, that was interesting. DH and I are traveling in the Savannah area now. We stopped for a potty break and just watched a man in a busy travel station driving a suburban, backing into a parking spot. And a woman walk alongside the suburban and then behind it. She almost got hit! The poor guy had to slam on his breaks.
Danger lurks everywhere!

They're absolutely right in this regard: "It boils down to safety, and when you want to have your convenience. With standard angle parking, it's simple to pull in but can be difficult to pull out. You may have to back your car entirely out into the traffic lane before you can even see the oncoming traffic (not very safe.) " Plus, the part about being able to load your stuff from the sidewalk is nice too. I've never been to this city, but I have been to others where they request people to back into angled parking spaces in the downtown area.

Bear in mind, people often don't even notice signs that indicate rules for parking. We have gas stations in PA that request that no SUVs, trucks, or vans park in the spaces right up against the building (except for the handicap spots, of course), and every single time (no exaggeration at all) we stop at one of these places my kids count the number of SUVs, trucks, & vans parked in those spots. And EVERY single one of the spots has that sign posted in it. I'm sure some people just don't care, but I'm also sure many just don't even notice it, despite it literally being right in front of their face. We're all in a hurry and we're all thinking about what we're going to do next, and we often miss details in what we're doing right now.

She admits she went a FEW times over the course of a week and WASN'T DRIVING. You claim to go MANY times and yet are ignorant to the fact there are areas that require backing in. Does the difference in your experiences validate you somehow? You are indeed special.

I park in a city lot just south of the main street. I don't park on the side of the street. Well, unless I'm visiting one particular restaurant. Then I do, but that's parallel parking. Hence my "huh." You are the special one.

I don't care how anyone parks as long as they can do it skillfully. I get frustrated with people who either can't drive well or can't drive because they have a larger vehicle than they can manage. Get your vehicle in the spot and centered between the lines.
By the way, parallel parking is required on the South Carolina driver's test. Backing is an expected skill, but is only tested as part of being able to execute a proper three-point turn.

I will back into spots at the mall, and into our driveway. I drive a CrV, and even though it is taller than many sedans, here in Texas, it seems that everyone drives much bigger SUVs and pickups, and you can't see around them when backing out, inching out going forward is a safer approach to me.
in parking lots where the spaces are angled in, I don't back in, those are easier to see to get in and out of.
Same with the driveway, and then I don't have to get out on the side right by the fence, where it is usually muddy. And i can see better pulling out.
I never back in such that I have to pull out against the traffic flow, I can't stand people who do.

Wow, a 5 pager on parking!
I love to back in to spaces, but usually just feel compelled to do it if Iโm at a busy eventโ-a school event or game, etc. I donโt know why. I guess so I can escape quickly? I will say that I donโt do it if Iโm going to be holding someone else up while I maneuver into the space. I tend to choose spaces far away from the door, so itโs an easy thing to handle without inconveniencing anyone else.

I can actually back in faster than I can pull in. My sister and I were just discussing this recently because we both always back in. It comes from working in a busy factory where most everyone backs in so they can get out faster. I even had one guy compliment me at a gas station about my mad backing in skills and asked if I could possibly give his wife lessons. ๐

DH & I just got home from the theatre and when DH parked, he backed in (which he rarely does). I asked if he did it because he read this thread. (And no, it wasn't because of this thread; he barely knows what 2Peas is; it was because the garage we parked in was also the parking for a big sports event going on and he figured it would be easier to nose his way out rather than hope someone would stop and let him back out)

Lots of anger over parking in Traverse. Good heavens. I guess I know not to visit their downtown if they actually expect everyone to back in.
I find it interesting that I can back out of a spot with no difficulty, but I can't back in. I wonder what gene I'm missing.
