I know we are later than everyone else, but my niece had her graduation today.
It was held in the gym. So nice hard bleachers, and about 80 degrees... Thankfully it was short - only about 1-1/2 hours because it was so not enjoyable
When I graduated 20 something years ago it was outside under a tent with folding chairs. I think that's better than bleachers .
My sons school holds it at a non school venue with actual seats thankfully, though he still has quite a few years left.,
Is this the norm? I felt really bad for the elderly sitting and swelterinj on those hard seats. I do feel they rushed through everything because of that .

Yep, ours is done in the HS gym. That's where most are around here, and yes, it's usually pretty hot.

Our graduations are always in the gym. Outdoor graduations are too risky because of weather. We don't have too many places that can accommodate 300 graduates plus 1000-1500 spectators other than the gym. It's usually hotter than hell in the gym, but that's the way it goes. We do stream it into the air-conditioned theater if it's too hot for anyone.

Ours was held in the football stadium. Gates opened at 5 p.m., ceremony at 7 p.m. First come, first serve, no tickets. There were about 200 chairs on the track, as well as an area for handicapped seating, as well as seating in the stands. Various performing groups from the schools entertained the crowds till the ceremony started. My sons had to be there at 5 p.m. (one to graduate and one to perform), so we were seated around 5:30 p.m. and it was already starting to fill up. I think they even had concessions set up for water, etc. So, definitely a long time to wait, but it was worth it because we were so excited for our son! It's just the nature of our graduations here, we're the 3rd largest high school in Arizona.

Ours are at an outdoor pavilion that normally has concerts. We have covered seats and lawn seats. It is large enough for all to be guaranteed a covered seat. Rain or shine it happens. The stage is set up very nice and the wide screens on sides are used for audiences to view. Happy graduation!

Ours is held at the indoor sports facility at our local university. It is nice because there is no limit on how many guests can attend. Also you have a good view from almost anywhere in the facility. The facility was remodeled last year and is quite nice.
The negative is that you can not go down and congratulate the graduates afterwards. You have to wait until they come up top or go outside. Not a big deal but it makes it easy to miss people. Also this year they would not allow parking in the adjacent parking lot. They wanted everyone to park in outlying lots and be shuttled in. It made it fairly chaotic (and left the huge lot by the venue almost empty.) It was silly to watch the ladies graduating jumping out of cars stuck in traffic and running to the ceremony.

I don't know where my school currently holds graduation, but when I graduated, it was at the local monastery. The gym was the backup location if it rained. They've built a new high school since then, so I wonder if the new gym is both climate controlled and adequate for a graduation sized crowd.

My sons' high school holds graduation in the Notre Dame basketball arena. Doors open at 5:30 and ceremony starts at 7 p.m. Oldest ds graduated last year and it looked pretty full. With nearly 900 graduates there's no facility at the high school that could hold graduates and guests without limiting attendance and risking the weather in the football stadium.
The biggest downside is that graduates need to arrive by 4:30 and cannot take cell phones or cameras with them. It's difficult enough to find your graduate outside afterwards, let alone their friends, and it is already dark so it's tough to get decent photos.
With such large classes the ceremony lasts 2.5+ hours. Thankfully the arena has comfortable seating and climate control.

Our high school is 2000+ kids, grades 9-12. We hold our ceremony at the football stadium. I think it's a bummer about cellphones not being allowed in. It would be fun to snap selfies with your friends in their cap and gown.

Our school has graduations in a local arena that also hosts concerts, wrestling, hockey etc. The arena seats 13,000 so having enough seating is never an issue.

Our city has three high schools that all have between 1,200 and 1,500 graduates each year. None of the high schools has an auditorium or gym big enough to hold all the students, much less their relatives too and it is too hot to hold the graduation in our one shared outdoor stadium. So our school district rents out one of the local mega-church auditoriums that can hold 20,000 (or something like that). We have a graduation at 10:00 a.m. for one high school, 2:00 p.m. for another high school and 7:00 p.m. for the third high school and each year their times revolve so that they aren't always graduating at the same time. After the last graduation a big party is hosted by the community and parents of the seniors that is basically a "lock in" at a large local park. No one gets in after midnight and no-one leaves until 6am. No drugs or drinking is allowed. It's basically a security measure to keep kids from throwing their own parties where drugs and alcohol might have a factor of kids getting killed on their way home.

Ours is held at Key Arena (professional basketball arena) in Seattle. Our school district has one there at 2:00, 5:00 and 7:00...so they move through pretty quickly. The seats are nice and comfy and you can bring your cell phone, camera, etc. in. Each family is given 10 tickets and it's first come first serve. There were plenty of seats.

My sons graduation was held at a minor league baseball field, kinda a cool place to graduate except it was about 90 degrees and blaring hot sun. Felt badly for all the graduates boiling in the sun in their caps and gowns.

My son graduated last month and it was at Red Rocks Ampitheater. It thankfully stopped raining, so we didn't get soaked. It was beautiful.

Most of the public schools here where I live have the graduations on the schools football field. I went to my niece's in Cupertino Ca at the beginning of June and it was also held on the football field. Never heard of them being held elsewhere, interesting!

Our student body is too large to have at the local high school so we have it down at Northwestern University in Evanston. Apparently getting into the arena isn't the issue. The problem comes in afterward and finding your graduate!

All the local high schools here hold them in the gym. All are small schools so overcrowding hasn't been a problem.
My high school class has the distinction of being the last class to graduate from the football stadium, way back in '81. Although we had a beautiful night, the weather was too unpredictable, so they moved it indoors.

Our high schools hold graduation at The Palace of Auburn Hills. That is the arena where the Detroit Pistons play basketball. My nephew's school holds theirs at an outdoor concert venue that has covered seating for a few thousand and lawn seating for more.

Most of the schools in our area use the fairgrounds (indoor pavilion, air-conditioned mostly) or the university arena. Although there are quite a few schools that do it outside, I can't imagine in this heat, or with our unpredictable weather. (I know there was at least one rainout and had to be postponed.)
