The handslap thread got me to thinking ... Do you think you're stronger In real life because of your online experiences?
I do. I've never been in major flame wars online, but I've been handslapped a couple of times. I do think my experiences on two peas helped me to let things that really don't matter roll off my back in real life.

One of the things I really love about the NSBR is the unbiased feedback. If I posted something and was a jerk about it, I was told so in no uncertain terms. Taught me a lot about how to conduct myself in controversial topics and also taught me how to really listen to opposing points of view. That is, I think, a very valuable experience.

Feedback, yes.
Handslaps, no. They just make me crawl back into lurkdom.

I don't handle the hand slap well, even if it's not directed at me. I always have that internal dialogue wondering why the person calling the other out feels their opinion or approach is more valid. Some people take on hand slapping like it's their job, and I don't understand it. I'm in the camp that I'm the boss of no one, and we are all doing the best that we can. I have a bad case of the Little Mary Sunshines.

No, I'm already pretty strong IRL.

Handslaps have taught me that when some people ask for honest opinions, they don't really want honesty, they want validation, so sometimes the best thing to do, no matter how long the response you just typed, is to just close the browser without posting and move on. Especially if you are unwilling to speak rainbows-and-puppies.

I don't think handslaps in particular have taught me anything, but I have definitely become a better debater after years of following the board.
