So I would love to scale back my collection a little bit, especially by getting rid of a lot of SC embellishment I'll never use, but I don't know what to do with what I get rid of. What do you do with the supplies that you aren't going to use? Unfortunately I don't have any friends who are into scrapbooking, and I feel too guilty about just chucking things in the trash. Can you donate them to Goodwill or something? Any ideas appreciated.

I donate quite a bit to goodwill. Have also heard of people donating things to schools or other places where people might do arts and crafts. I do also sell some things like stamps and dies.

You can donate it, try and sell it online (this could be a good choice for the SC embellishments you have...tons of people love the old SC stuff), give it to schools, youth centers, churches, etc. What about lumping it all together and selling it as a box? I see those on Instagram and they sell pretty well.

I will sometimes give it to my nieces who like to craft. Otherwise there is a children's hospital where I live that hosts a scrapbook night for the NICU moms and they love donated supplies.

I have donated supplies to my son's schools (elementary and high school) and the teachers have been thrilled. I have also sold boxes of mixed supplies on Kijiji - I just put in a big box anything and everything from my scraproom that I'm getting rid of and sell it for $50 or so - there could be anything from stamps, dies, brads, stickers, patterned paper, pieces of ribbon, punches and other tools - even stuff that is half used or not a complete set. There seem to be people out there that just like to buy a box of stuff and see what they get. I do put lots in the box, though, so they definitely get a deal.

Scrapbooking isn't big here so I can't just drop a box of and expect people to want it (or even know what the stuff is). With some embellishments, I just use them up for wrapping gifts. Unfortunately, I've had people return embellishments I put on their gifts so I could use them for my "souvenir books." #neverendingcycle

Is there a hashtag people use? I don't have that many followers on instagram.

That sounds great! I actually just finished a rotation in the NICU yesterday. I actually never saw many families around because a lot of them lived out of town and its hard for them to visit. I'll be rotating in the children's hospital for a whiles longer though, I'll have to check to see if they take donated craft supplies. Thanks for the idea!

Before I had my kid we lived in the city a block and a half away from an elementary school. At one point I had about four big boxes of stuff I needed to get rid of because we were planning on moving so I called up the school and asked the front office person if they could use it for art projects and they jumped all over it. The elementary school art programs in particular are always getting cut, cut, cut so they are happy to get anything.
Some other options for donating if you really just want it gone: Ronald McDonald House daycare centers preschool programs Girl Scout / Boy Scout troops churches that run Vacation Bible School programs nursing homes adult day care places before and after school care programs groups that make cards to send to military troops
There are all kinds of places that would love to get donated scrappy stuff and could put it to good use.

When I was teaching I just brought all my unwanted supplies and put them in the art center. Now I donate them to Goodwill.
I see a lot of scrapbook stuff at Goodwill. Last week I found a bunch of fairly recent embellishments (One Canoe Two Hazelwood and Jasmine Jones) tossed in a bin for .89 a package!

Put it all in a box and store it someplace. Someday you'll get an idea and need something in that box to create the idea into reality. Experience typing here.

I have a box in my scraproom where I throw random bits and bobs that I know I'll never use, or the leftovers from embellishment packs....that sort of thing. Every once in a while I offer it 'free to a good home' to my buddies on another scrapping message board. There are people who LOVE to get that sort of thing!
I am going to check out those FB groups posted, too.

I go to a scrapbooking retreat 2-3 times a year and they have a giveaway table. I take my purged stuff and leave it there. I don't have to take any leftovers home and my stuff finds a new home! Win-win!
If you go to crops take a box and let people have at it!

I either, sell it on Facebook groups for pennies, or give it away for the cost of postage. I like to pack up big pizza boxes of supplies and sell them for a few £ more than the cost of the postage.
If not, papers, journaling cards, stickers can all be recycled.

Here's a post from another website.....
Hi...My friend and I started a Facebook group called Scraps & Bits Wish Book Team in which we make 12x12 layouts, put them in books and deliver to Make A Wish for specific wish recipients...Our first wish list of 25 scrapbooks was recently delivered and was a big success...Our current list is for 33 books and with just a couple of members we are half way through it and then we just received the newest list also 33 books...As you can imagine with just two of us the cost is beginning to escalate...We have a couple of members who assemble pages and one other who actually contributes pages, so we have a long road ahead of us...I am currently reaching out to many companies and groups/forums in order to help us with supplies, pages, embellishments, etc. as it is becoming very expensive with just two of us buying all the books, papers, embellishments and also making the pieces and putting pages together...If anyone is interested in contributing or just seeing what we are all about let me know, thanks in advance...Just trying to help these Make A Wish recipients preserve their special wish...We would appreciate any help anyone can provide...We can be contacted at scrapsandbits1@gmail.com or private message to our Facebook group Scraps & Bits Wish Book Team...Thank you in advance either way...

A couple of other ideas for places that might take your no longer wanted supplies - Boys and Girls Club, scout troops, libraries, women's prisons.
Last year when I had a friend who passed away and I was given the task of getting rid of her scrapping supplies we had a table at a city wide rummage sale and made around $350 that was given to her great niece for a Scout trip to Australia.

There is actually a place here where you can donate items like that, and other people come to make projects, shop from the donations, and it sounds like it is some kind of charity. I haven't actually been there.
If your area doesn't have such a place, I would donate unwanted crafty items to a school, or just give them to a teacher. Or to homeschoolers if you know any.

There is a place in my neighborhood. It is called "Scrap it Up". It a place to donate all your unused/slightly used craft supplies. Their mission is to keep it out of the landfill. They sell the items for really cheap and that is how they make money. They were selling two used typewriters for $7.00 and $15.00 the last time I was there. They have all kinds of tools and other scrapbooking things. Once I go through my stash again, I will donate there.
ETA: I just read they are all crafty volunteers and a non profit. So they put all the revenue back into the store. Pretty cool.

I think it would be great if the For Sale board here became more active. Maybe you could put together a few lots by type - stamps, embellishments, etc. - or by manufacturer. It is usually to expensive to ship 12x12 paper, but things that can fit in envelopes or smaller boxes aren't too bad to pass along for the cost of shipping plus a little more. I have a lot of items I need to list too.

In my neck of the woods, we have a company that runs consignment sales for scrapbook and other craft supplies, so usually when I am in purge mode, I sign up to sell at one of those. (It's great, I just put labels into the computer, print them off and affix to my items, drop 'em off on a Friday, pick up leftovers and a check on Sunday.)

We have a reuse store called Who Gives a Scrap. There are several in our state. Schools will often take donations too. I was in the reuse store last week and found nine of those plastic paper holders that normally cost $12.99 each. They were $9 total.

A domestic violence shelter would be a good idea, and I know organizations working with foster kids can use it - the kids can make books about themselves.
