You go somewhere without an appt or reservation and they tell you there id an hour wait. You ask if you can come back in an hour and they say yes. Would you expect to br at the beginning of the wait list or the end when you come back?

If they took down my name and information, I would expect to be at the top of the list. Although, there have been times in specific situations where they say if you leave, you lose your place in line. If I wasn't a 100% sure, I would probly check before I leave.

Though in reality, if they told me an hour wait at pretty much anywhere, I'd just leave and go somewhere else. Especially if we are talking restaurants.

If you placed your name on a waiting list and they said you could leave and come back, I'd expect my place in line to be saved. However, if I wasn't there when they called my name, then I feel I've lost my turn and would need to request to be placed (at the end) on waiting list again.

At the top of the list. Why would I ask if it was okay for me to leave and come back only to be kicked back to the bottom of the wait list? That would be ridiculous.

I would expect my place in line to be saved. But if they called me early and I wasn’t there I would not expect my space to be saved.

Would you expect to br at the beginning of the wait list or the end when you come back? The end of the line when I come back unless they made an appointment/reservation for me at the time I left. The answer to "May I leave" is always going to be "yes" (unless it is a prison) You need to ask about policy for where you fall in the line before you leave. If they didn't write anything down you can bet it will be putting you at the end of the line again... otherwise, everyone coming in will say "oh but I was here 45 minutes ago"

The restaurant's priority is to seat those waiting. They have no guarantee that you will come back. Many places now will take your name and cell number and encourage you to leave. If you don't respond to the text when a table is available they move onto the next party. I will hang around for a table that offers this option.

At the top of the list. Why would I ask if it was okay for me to leave and come back only to be kicked back to the bottom of the wait list? That would be ridiculous. It really depends on how they handle their waiting patrons. At my local DMV everyone cues up in line. The clerks just call "next" If you walk in and ask how long the wait time is they will tell you an estimated time based on the number of people in line. So if you leave and come back there is no record of you being there in the first place. The people who are standing in line are going to be mad if you waltz to the front of the line. From their point of view you cut the line. OTOH, you may leave and come back to no line. In my office we have an electronic sign in. The receptionist may say it is about an hour wait, but if several people leave instead of continuing to wait the wait time is suddenly shorter than an hour, your name gets called and if you don't respond you are deleted. When you come in you'll have to sign in again at the bottom of the list. Other places using a paper list may take you next when you return. All depends on how the office handles waiting lists. Don't assume, ask.

They don't wan't you hanging around because it looks like the wait is long to incoming customers. When we choose to wait we usually get a table fairly quickly.

Again, as others have said, if you come back before they've called you're name, you stay in the same order in the queue. If they've gone past you, you go back to the bottom of the list.

If I left my information I'd expect to be at the beginning of the list. Otherwise I'd expect to be at the end, as though I'd just walked in for the first time.

The way you have written this, I assume you go back to the bottom of the list. The restaurant's priority is to seat those waiting. They have no guarantee that you will come back I see a lot of restaurants writing down phone numbers next to the walk in wait list and then texting people a few minutes before your table is ready. I have a firm policy never to wait an hour to eat, there's plenty other restaurants to go to.
