Thinking of going for a few days in Sept. Never been. Which hotels are best? DH and I aren't huge gamblers, just play the slots. What other fun stuff is there to do? Thanks!

Depends on what you're looking for in a hotel. Luxury? Location? Nightlight?
There are a lot of great shows and amazing restaurants, which is where we spent our time and money. I'm not a big gambler either, but a lot of the major casino hotels have an exhibit of some sort and I enjoyed going to them. There's also excursions away from Las Vegas that are worthwhile. We choose the Hoover Dam. With more time and money I probably would have chosen an overnight or long day trip to the Graand Canyon.
eta: Have you considered the weather? Temps average a high of 96* in September and if you're not used to it, it can be overwhelming.

If you are not big gamblers and it is your first time there I would pick a hotel on the strip. There is so much to see and do there besides gambling. There is also a bus that goes up and down the strip if it gets too hot or you are tired. There are many big hotels to choose from, all depends on your budget. All the major hotels have a pool, shopping and restaurants.
ETA - you can literally see the world by visiting the strip hotels - Paris, Rome, New York, Venice, Egypt. Lol!!!

Obviously, the fountains at the Bellagio are wonderful. But, also go into the lobby and look up at the fabulous art glass on the ceiling by Dale Chihuly. Then, continue on into the indoor garden. It's fabulous.
I like to see the flamingos at the Flamingo, too.
The Hoover Dam is nearby. You can rent a car for a day.

We were in Vegas in February and saw Le Reve at the Wynn - I highly recommend it - fabulous! Be sure to do the 'High Roller' - it was so fun!

when we go to Vegas we stay at one of the larger hotels on the Strip. we like the Wynn, Encore, Ceasars and Venetian. we don't gamble much if at all when we are there but there is enough to see and do in and around the Strip. there are shows, shops, lots of walking around and people watching. lots to do even if you don't have a car.

We've stayed on the strip, downtown and rented a house. Our favorite is staying downtown though. The people watching is fabulous, the hotels are close together, the light show is fun and the slots are a little looser On the weekends there are bands on a couple of cross streets (we like to listen to music). If we want to see a show, we can hop on the bus or grab a cab and go to the strip in a short amount of time. It totally depends on what you like to do.

Temps average a high of 96* in September and if you're not used to it, it can be overwhelming. we went in august and it was hot but still doable you can walk thru most of the hotels and spend most of the walk indoors - there are also free/paid trams between hotels every hotel/casino has something to see we saw Chris ANgel MindFreak and it was a good show fremont street one night lots of good food and the drinking is gratis on the casion floor pools are crowded but still a nice way to cool off gina

We like The Golden Nugget and The D (used to be Fitzgerald’s) The D has really good Margaritas lol If you like to play blackjack you can actually find 2.00 tables during the day too, so you’re not spending a ton if you don’t want too. My dh likes it. I don’t care for Blackjack. I like Let it Ride. I won 3k on my first hand at the Golden Nugget on a girls trip. Paid for my whole trip and new furniture when I got home lol That was in the late 90’s though

I do love downtown, but more than a day of that craziness is enough for me. Lots of ass and titties and banana hammocks. . You can find it all over, but downtown just has more "performers" who sag a little (or a lot) more. Bellagio is awesome and a little more expensive, but Paris, Flamingo, and the Mirage are all located close to each other and a bit more centrally located on the strip. We've stayed in probably 10 hotels and all of them have been fun. Make sure you check out as many hotels as possible. Ceasars, the Venetian, Excalibur and the Luxor all have major themes going on in them. It will be hot, but not as much humidity as many places so ducking into a casino to cool off as you walk makes it bearable. Sunday through Thursday are definitely less crowded days than the weekend. If you like great pools, MGM and Mandalay Bay have nice choices. There is a free tram from Excalibur to Mandalay Bay that save you about 20 minutes of walking. The bus system has two main buses on the Strip. One skips more stops than the other, so just keep that in mind. Taco Bell has a cantina on the strip the might have the cheapest alcohol. You can buy the yard slushes there for cheaper than most of the hotels. You can also get married upstairs in their chapel. Ha, not really a chapel, more like extra seating with wedding Taco Bells on the wall. There is also a set of maybe 8 Fat Tuesdays that you can get refills on your margaritas and daiquiris. We go to Vegas maybe once or twice a year (since 2002) and I always see new stuff when we go. If you are a fan, there is an In N Out burger place right by the Ferris wheel if you like them. If you are just looking for shopping, there is a Planet Hollywood Mall, Ceasars, and the Fashion Mall. The Fashion Mall is huge and packed with so many stores. They also have massage chairs for a couple of bucks and you might need them.

SO and I like the casino floor at New York New York best for slots. It's also a nice hotel, IMO, and it works out well for us because we live in the Central Time Zone, so I will go to bed at midnight Vegas time (2am home time), but he will want to stay up so he goes down to the floor, and I sleep better knowing he's staying in the building. I also liked the spa at NYNY better than the one at MGM grand, and they usually have some specials if you're there on a weekday. I got my first facial at the NYNY spa and was really happy with it.
I asked him for his second choice, and he said he also likes Excalibur and the Venetian. Excalibur is one of the least expensive (if not the cheapest) of the MGM Grand family of hotels; NYNY is also pretty inexpensive. Excalibur and NYNY are next to each other and connected by a pedestrian bridge near the south end of the strip. For as cheap as it is, Excalibur was clean and comfy. My only complaint is that one (maybe both) towers of the hotel overlook the pool, so if you want a nap mid-day, it's very loud with the music from the pool area. The Venetian is owned by Las Vegas Sands and is pretty pricey. It's much further north on the strip. But it's a lovely casino and there's a great shopping center there. It's also across from the Mirage, which has their volcano erupting nightly-- that's kind of fun.
I have relatives who really like the Harrah's family of properties, and they usually stay at Harrah's, which is one of the less expensive of the Harrah's hotels, but I think the casino's pretty small. (And I think my family likes them because they are midstrip, and because those relatives spend enough to get their entire hotel stay comped.)

I highly recommend the Blue Man Group at Monte Carlo. That was one of the most fun nights ever. They do a fantastic show. Mystere at Treasure Island is probably my favorite Cirque show. Also, Penn and Teller at RIO was good fun. They're hilarious together.
As for hotels, I would stay on the strip, so that you're central to everything. Decide how much you want to spend per night and then go from there. You can stay at Excalibur which is cheaper, a bit rundown and just OK. You can go uber pricey and stay at Bellagio. There is everything in between. I would surf online and see what looks interesting to you. Las Vegas has quickly become a getaway for foodies, as well. Many of the celebrity chefs have restaurants there. The strip is full of characters and drunk people, but it's a great place to people watch. As you walk people will try to hand your dh cards for escort services, strip clubs, etc. It is Vegas.

Before this year, I had never been to Vegas. My dd moved there in August and now I've been 4 times. That said, I have not spent tons of time on the strip. I don't really gamble and don't have the need to spend money on expensive drinks etc. Dd calls it Disney for adults. LOL. That said, I've seen a few Cirque shows, all of which are outstanding. So many great shows to see in general. My absolute favorite place near the strip is the Neon Museum. They do tours of the boneyard (the name for the outdoor area where they keep the old signs) at night and during the day. I did the night tour last time and hope to do the day tour next time. They give you a history of Las Vegas and a history of the neon signs themselves. Very cool photo ops. The Smith Center is a gem that is not well known. It's a bit off the strip and is the major Las Vegas theater. That's where the Broadway tours come (Hamilton was just there), where the symphony plays, some headliners, and of course, where the ballet dances (dd is ballet dancer and performs there). I don't think many tourists are aware that it even exists. Dd took me hiking at Red Rock last time. It was too hot already in May! Hoping to go back maybe in the winter.
